Gold Pearl

Description

The gold pearl, most elusive of all treasure, is both a treasure hunter’s dream and nightmare. It’s rarity could tide someone over through multiple lifetimes. But it could also plunge one into insanity. It’s location is unknown and any information that surfaces leads to false hope and failure. Competition is not scarce either. From one end is the navy and the other are pirates. Baekhyun is confident he will find it. Until he stumbles upon a treasure more worthy.

Foreword

When Geum Jinju was 17 years old. A pirate ship docked close to the shores of the island she lived in. There was nothing unusual with that since the island was home to a steep mountain range that pirates used to hide their ships from view. However, there was something different about this ship. Byun Baekhyun. That was the name of her captain.

At first he was just like any other pirate captain. Terrifying, with kohl-lined eyes that pierced into the deepest parts of your soul. The only difference was his age. Unlike all others, he and his crew were young. She guessed that they may be her age or a little older. Jinju had never seen a pirate that was so young. That, and he had quite a small crew of eight including him.

Pirates who came by these parts usually made no trouble for the citizens. Jinju never understood why since pirates were known to pillage. She thought that maybe their purpose for coming was to get information. Though he interested her, she kept her distance like usual. At least until she met him without all his jewelry and kohl around his eyes.

The day she got a good first glimpse of him, he looked just like any other teenage boy. He was dressed like one, blending in with the townspeople at the market. She didn’t even realize it was him. When she eventually found out, she’d gotten so close to him that she thought she knew everything she could and there was no harm in getting close to a pirate. They’ve never even harmed anyone in the island.

Before long, he confessed that he loved her. Looking back, she was too young and naive to have believed him. Was he even aware of what his words truly meant? Or did he think that maybe he could get vital information about his treasure hunt by making an unsuspecting girl believe in his fake affections?

Didn’t love mean that he’d tell her he would be leaving and that he would come back for her? Better yet, shouldn’t love mean that he keep his promise of never leaving? She understood his love of adventure and not being able to stay in one place for too long so Jinju would have even settled for taking her with him. But no, instead of the three options she could have accepted, he chose to leave without a trace.

Five years after he sailed away, never to be seen again, Jinju is convinced that her love has been betrayed. Baekhyun only wanted his treasure and anyone who didn’t contribute to attaining it did not deserve his time and attention. So he left, just like that.

Nowadays, the thought of him barely registers in her mind. She has other things, more important, that need her attention. Like escaping this deadly storm with her life...
