Just stand beside me, and I'll be fine.

Umbrella

*KIBUM’S POV*

We were strolling along the sidewalk in the soft midnight rain with only my small umbrella as our shield, just admiring the pavement glistening under the street lights. It’s been a while since we last did this, just me and my best friend, and the moment never felt any better.

“Kibum-ah,” she then spoke.

“Yes?”

“How would you know if a person you really like likes you back?”

I glanced at her and then back at the pavement. Who could she be talking about?

“Well, maybe you could tell if he always smiles when you’re together. He always answers to your texts even if it’s sent late. He’d do all efforts just to make time for you. He gets mad when you do things carelessly and he always makes sure that you’re okay. He comes to you when he needs help, and he lets you know that he will always be a helping hand for you even at times when he is out of reach. He makes fun of you, because he could see in you what he couldn’t see in other girls. I guess that’s always how it is.”

I smiled as I answered her. Did she finally decode my thoughts? Does she know my true feelings for her?

I looked at her again. Her mind seems to be somewhere else.

“Is there someone you like?” I asked. What a stupid question.

“I wouldn’t have asked if I didn’t.” She smiled at me. Gosh, I love her smile.

“Who is it?” I wondered, hoping she’d give an answer I want to hear.

“Promise you won’t tell.”

“Of course I won’t,” I told her and I was ready for what I was about to hear.

Donghae-oppa.”

My heart stopped disappointed. So it really isn’t me. Maybe there’s no hope at all for us.

“Kibum-ah,” she called again.

“Hmm?”

“I really like him. I want to confess but I don’t know if he’d feel the same,” she told me in a gloomy face.

I inhaled deeply. I guess I should just let her know.

.

.

.

“He likes you. I could tell by the way he keeps talking on and on about you.”

“He does?” Her face brightened up. I let a small smile show upon my face.

“I swear, ask anyone and they’ll say the same thing.”

“Thanks for telling me this. You really are my best friend.”

My heart stopped once again as I heard the words “best friend”.  Oh, if only you knew.

The rain began pouring harder, and my umbrella couldn’t shelter us anymore. We carefully ran all the way back to Super Junior’s dorm and because of the rain she reluctantly agreed to stay for the rest of the night.

-------------------------------------

The sun was shining brightly the next morning, and I was heading down to the living room when I heard her and Donghae-hyung talking. I quietly sat on the stairs and listened. When I took a peek at them, they were in each other’s arms. They finally confessed.

After a moment of thinking, I stood up and finally made my way down.

“Kibum-ah!” Donghae looked at me surprised. They let go of each other.

“Don’t worry, I won’t say anything for now.” I flashed a bright smile. “But if you’re really desperate, you can always get a room.”

“YAH!” she shouted, and both of them turned red. I couldn’t help but chuckle.

Just then, we heard footsteps.

“What’s going on here?” Ryeowook asked as he and Hankyung climbed down the stairs.

They looked at me nervously as they further split apart. I just kept on smiling.

“Oh, nothing unusual. Donghae-hyung just told me a while ago he wet his bed once again.”

“YAH KIM KIBUM!” he scolded, his face red as tomato. I couldn’t help but laugh even harder.

“Aigoo, kids.” Hankyung-hyung shook his head as they went to the kitchen to prepare breakfast with Donghae followed them, trying to convince it wasn’t true.

“Uh, Kibum-ah,” she started once we were the only ones left.

“Deh?” I looked at her, still lovely as ever.

“Are you okay?”

“What do you mean?”

“You know, with me and Donghae.” She held my hand and my heart skipped a beat yet again. “I just feel like I need your approval since you’re practically like an oppa to me.”

After a few seconds of silence, I looked at her straight in the eyes. No, a voice let out in my head.

“Yeah, it’s completely fine.” I smiled. “At least I won’t be the only one who has to look after a whiny stubborn girl with a lop-sided .”

“YAAAAAH!” she whined and I stumbled backwards from laughing.

It’s a painful truth to accept, but if this is the only way to make you happy, then I won’t keep you away from that happiness. May the sun always shine upon you. If ever rain pours down and problems storm you, I just want you to know that you are always welcome to stand under my umbrella. I’ll stand beside you until the sun shines again.
