Jongdae couldn’t let go of his stare at you for the past hour. “Are you sure you’re alright?” he asked worriedly—for the tenth time.

“I said, I’m fine, Jongdae,” you coughed as you delved into your bed after fixing him breakfast for him to go to work. “Hurry, or you’d be late for work,”

“Oh,” Jongdae looked down, still feeling anxious. He walked to the door before stopping again, “But, you know, I can ask permission for today—“

“Jongdae,” you gave him a look. “Go to work, I’m fine,”

If Jongdae had cat ears, you could imagine it flopping down sadly. “Well, alright then. Don’t overwork yourself, I’ll come back home as quick as I can, okay?” he said as he opened the bedroom door, taking small steps to leave the room. “I love you,”

“Love you too, stay safe,” you waved him goodbye before he left reluctantly.

You could hear his heavy steps going down the stairs, the sound of the keys unlocking the exit door and when the door slammed close, you quickly jumped out of your bed. It wasn’t easy faking a fever to the ever attentive Kim Jongdae, but how are you going to give him a surprise for his birthday if you didn’t?

You picked up your phone from your desk and quickly punched a few numbers in.

“Hello?” you could hear Baekhyun’s lazy voice over the phone.

“Baekhyun, Jongdae has left the house. I repeat, Jongdae has left the house,”

You could hear him scrambling in his office chair, “I’m on it, he should be here in an hour,”

“Is everything prepared?”

“You have no idea. Chanyeol and I practically threw all our errands on Jongdae’s table, he won’t make it home till at least ten,”

“Ten?” you pouted. “But I need him to stay longer than that,”

Baekhyun hummed in thought, “Well, I can ask him to finish that song we’re working on, it’d take him a while to finish,”

“Great! I just need him to be home late, but no later than twelve!”

“The team and I will try our best,” Baekhyun chuckled.  “Alright, best of luck, Da Hye!”

With that settled, you quickly ran down the stairs to the living room. You picked up your laptop and set it on the dining table, opening the website where you purchased your package. A few months ago, as you were strolling at the mall with Jongdae, you specifically remember him staring at a glass grand piano. The price of that piano was enough to make both yours and Jongdae’s heart cartwheel out of your bodies. It was so expensive Jongdae got depressed for a while, but after some extreme saving adventure and working like mad, you got enough money to buy him a second hand one.

Jongdae had always been the one to surprise your and shower you with gifts in every birthdays, anniversaries and celebrations from day one, and after tying the knot with this man, you’ve finally decided to turn the tables. Not that you didn’t want to back then, it’s just that Jongdae had always done the extra effort better than anyone else, so your surprises were nothing compared to what he does. That’s why, this time it’s going to be different.

It was seven in the evening, and Jongdae had already bombarded you with texts and phone calls to check if you’re okay.

Are you still sick?

Are you taking your meds well?

Are you asleep?

Have you eaten?

Go to sleep early.

Don’t skip meals

What are you doing?

Do you want to go to the hospital?

He even gone through the trouble of coming home earlier not too long ago. You had just finished baking his cake and was cooling it when he fumbled with his keys to unlock the door. You panicked and shoved the cake in the fridge before opening all the windows to make sure the smell of vanilla and chocolate escaped the house, and hurried to dunk all the bowls and pans to the sink until Jongdae stepped inside.

“Sweetie?” he frowned when he saw you frozen in the kitchen, stopping midway to throw the last bowl to the spatula to the sink.  “What are you doing out of bed?”

You craned your head to him stiffly, “I-I was just doing the house chores,”

“Did you cook?” he puts his bag over to the couch before padding over to you.

You quickly the tap to let the water run over the chocolate covered bowl. “I did,”

“If you were hungry, you could’ve called me to get some take out for you,” he hugged you from behind, sliding his arms around your waist. “It seems that you’re feeling better,”

“Yeah, but—“ you turned around to stop him from inspecting the sink. “What are you doing out of your office?” you tried to seem upset this time.

Jongdae tilts his head, “Is it wrong for me to leave early for my sick wife?”

“Of course it is!” you exclaimed, pushing him back to the door. “Working is no joke, Jongdae. Who’s going to pay the bills? Who’s going to be responsible over the water bills, the electricity bills, food—“

“Honey, it’s just one day~” he whined, stopping you when he turned around, holding your hand.

You almost fell for those puppy eyes of his, but those eyes weren’t going to fail your plan now. You turned your head away, “Get back to work, Jongdae,”

The male pouts, “Why are you acting so strange today?”

“Come back after you have all of your tasks done, okay? I’m fine, so go,” you said quickly as you opened the door and pushed him out.

“But—“

“I love you! Stay safe!” you threw him his bag before closing the door shut.

You heaved a sigh of relief, attempting to walk away until he opened the door again.

You your heels and scowled at him, “Why are you—“

Jongdae silenced you with a kiss, stunning you as he leaned in closer, making you take a step back until you heard the clinks of the keys. “Just forgot to take my keys,” he grinned, showing you the keys that he stuck on the door before pecking you on your cheek
