When the knock sounded on Atsushi’s office door, he would have been lying if he tried to deny the fact that the first person that came to mind was Leandra.
There was no need for her to be at his office, or, at least, he hoped. If she had come all the way up to his office during working hours then that meant something was wrong, and, for the sake of everyone involved, nothing needed to be wrong with Leandra. But the idea that she had decided to come see him on the job was thrilling, to say the least; he looked up immediately from the email he had been composing, turning his attention to the door on the other side of his spacious office.
“Come in,” the door opened at the sound of his voice and, to his dismay, it was not the woman who had command of all of his free thought; instead it was one of his assistants, heading into the office with a manila folder in tow.
“Mr. Sato, the background checks for the latest employees have arrived,” he announced, closing the folder as he made his way over to him.
“Oh, that’s right.” The last group of employees that had been hired for the Empyrean had been taken on during a time when Atsushi had not been present to conduct the background checks; with his permission they had been hired on a whim, or a probationary period of sorts. But Atsushi was not the type to run his business without all of the bases covered, and all of the necessary steps taken; as soon as he was back in office he sent out for all of the background checks to be conducted. “Thank you, Jeremy,” Atsushi said to his assistant as he took the folder from him, and turned his attention to the contents as he left. For the most part, they were average citizens; one or two of them had had a couple of questionable adventures in the past, but Atsushi was farthest from the person who could judge others based on their pasts; he only blinked an eye at the most offending of crimes, and these didn’t count.
He couldn’t help but smile as he reached Leandra’s name and picture. It was the greatest hire that he’d ever made, if he was allowed to be a little unprofessional. He wasn’t even going to bother with reading over her profile (as if Leandra could do anything wrong) but he was curious to know more about her; maybe where she had gone to school, or her birthday, for certain – that was definitely a good place to start.
