Mina stared at the ceiling before turning to look at her husband who was sleeping soundly. Arranged marriage it was between her husband and her. Even though both have agreed to part away with a divorce after 3 years of marriage, Mina has never treated this marriage as a fake one. She does what she is supposed to do as a wife. As she watches her husband sleep peacefully, her tears roll down her cheeks unexpectedly. Somehow, she had wished that their path did not cross. Impossible because she knows perfectly what’s done is done.

Technically she should have been divorced by now because they are on their 4^th year into their marriage. While the first year of marriage was a period of adjustment. The second and third was pure torture. Occasionally he would bring different girls into the guest room to fulfil his ual needs and desires. Thankfully none of the girls would stay past 5 am because by then the maids would be up. On nights like those, Mina would cry herself to sleep.

Flashback

Mina was blessed to be staying at Chaeyoung’s huge mansion. Mina was brought up by a single father who happened to work for the CEO Kim. On one occasion, Mr Myoui had saved his CEO’s life and Mr Kim, in turn, promised to marry his son to Mina. The prodigious son is non-other than Kim Jiwon or more commonly known as Bobby.

Jiwon was such a sweet guy. He was polite and was a gentleman. That was until their wedding night. Although the news he broke to her broke her heart, the way he confided in her was so sincerely done that she had no other ways other than to agree.

BB: Before you have any ideas… I want to say I am sorry.

MN: Sorry?

BB: I know I should have rejected this marriage earlier but I really had no other way to do so.

MN: You didn’t want to marry me? Why didn’t you say anything while we were engaged?

BB: I didn’t know how to?

MN: So, your point in telling me this tonight on our wedding night is…?

BB: To say sorry and to prepare you for our divorce in 3 years.

MN: Divorce?

Mina didn’t know what to say or where to look. How could her husband and fiancé of 8 months talk about divorce on their first night?

BB: I am sorry Mina. I am not willing to let go of my freedom.

MN: Do you have a girlfriend that I should know about?

BB: No not a girlfriend. I don’t do too well with relationships. I just tend to sleep around. That’s all.

MN: 3 years is all that you are giving us?

BB: I think 3 years is apt. You can have your freedom after all the 3 years is up.

MN: I need time to process all that I just heard.

BB: I am sorry. I will give you some space. I will sleep on the couch. You can have the bed tonight.

Mina remembered how smashed her heart was. She remembers vividly when she immediately get out of her wedding dress and cry herself in the bath tub. She remembered staying up the whole night writing a piece of paper that would help keep her alive.

When morning came, she woke her husband up. She sat down opposite him and he looked at her nervously.

MN: First of all, I will address you as oppa. It is just courtesy and I think it is what it is, you are older than me.

BB: I am fine with that.

MN: I think the 3 years period is fair enough.

BB: You think so too?

MN: However, having said that, I do have some things that I hope you could be considerate of.

BB: Example?

MN: First, we will behave like any married couple minus the ual .

BB: Definitely.

MN: Second, you can sleep with all the women that you want but please no dating while we are legally wed. I wouldn’t want to upset our families. If any news outlet found out, it wouldn’t do well for your family and my dad.

BB: Understood. But that means I have to bring the girls back home.

MN: You could and should because it is safer for everyone. But you can only do the deed in the guest room. Not our master bedroom.

BB: Got it.

MN: Third, I will sign the prenup that you gave yesterday and no you don’t have to pay me any alimony because I am a working woman. I am independent enough.

BB: But the money is for your own good.

MN: Nope, I will not accept it.

BB: Is that all?

MN: Last not the least. Let’s respect each other’s freedom. You and I are free to do what we like as long as we don’t jeopardize our family’s name.

BB: Agreed.

MN: Oh…

BB: What else? (He sighs almost feeling annoyed.)

MN: I hate goodbyes. When the time is up, let walk out of each other’s life quietly. Let the lawyers handle everything.

Jiwon couldn’t help but felt funny. The Mina in front of him is a very different Mina than he had known. He was surprised she could come up with all this in one night.

Honestly, she didn’t know why she reminisced about the past. It would only hurt her. She rises up and took a shower. She then left the room and head to the kitchen to prepare breakfast. Her husband is a fussy eater and after a couple of years, he only ate food that Mina made.

The alarm made Jiwon irritated but he is even more irritated to be waking up all alone on the bed. Although Mina never complained, he actually enjoys a little too much when given the opportunity to hug her in his sleep. After his shower, he opened his wardrobe and saw the first sign. Her clothes are getting lesser. He wanted to ignore the sign but he knew the time is coming. He got dressed and make his way to the dining hall. He saw her having her breakfast.

BB: Good morning Baby… (He greeted her.)

MN: Good morning Hun… (She returned the endearment.)

BB: You busy today?

MN: I have things to do.

BB: Mum called yesterday.

MN: Uhuh… she wants us home for dinner, right?

BB: I’ll fetch you at 6?

MN: Sure. Just give me a call so you know where to pick me up.

BB: Got to go, I will drop you off at work.

MN: It’s okay. I will get the driver to do it.

Jiwon got a little annoyed with her short answers. However, he understood clearly it was in no place of him to question her further.

Mina sat on her bed after breakfast. She refused to let the maid do the bed because she was feeling sentimental. However, she needed the time to think carefully about what needs to be done.

Last week, she was awoken by the too ‘loud’ love making session of Jiwon’s. She hadn’t heard it for close to 4 months but hearing it reminded her that it was time for her to start to move on. He did tell her the marriage would only last 3 years and to be able to continue for an extended period of time is what she calls lucky.

Since that night, Mina has contacted her lawyer. Nothing is holding her back. Since her father died almost a year ago, there is no other reason to prolong the marriage. It’s a countdown to another 23 more days to her birthday. She wishes to part before her birthday. She already bought a house back in Japan where her mother was born and has slowly been furnishing it. She wanted to move seamlessly and with few hassles. She quickly brushes off the lingering thoughts and prepared herself to head to her lawyer’s office.

As she steps out of the lawyer’s office, she took a deep breath. She had spent almost the entire day sorting out her immigration matters. She can’t wait to be back in Japan. She wants to be away from everyone that she knows. She has settled the procurement process of her new house in Japan. It is a pretty traditional house with 5 bed rooms, a nice onsen and traditional fireplace. She would open Bed & Breakfast services when she is much more settled. She would also write when she has the time. Those plans are still in her head.

The first that come to her mind before all the plans could be realized was Chaeyoung. How was she to break the news to her sister in law who is also a good friend of her? She knows she has to do it sooner than later. She wouldn’t want to ruin anything for the lovely girl who just gotten married 2 months ago but at least she is relieved that there is someone genuine who will take care of that petite girl. And the guy is none other than her lawyer, Jinhwan.

Mina wanted to make her way to her in-law’s house on her own but Bobby was adamant about fetching her. So, she window shopped for an hour before buy a cup of juice for her husband. As she stood at the drop-off point, just by standing is enough to attract guys. That is how beautiful she is. She had to refuse politely when a man approached her to get her number but the man still came close to her making her uncomfortable. She never felt glad when she saw a black Bentley arrived. She quickly went to the door and was shock to see Jiwon driving. Normally at this time of the day, the driver would be driving the car.

She had to seat beside him at the front. It was awkward. After driving off a couple of minutes in silent, he finally opened his mouth although he look like he was frowning.

BB: Who was that?

MN: I don’t know. He just wouldn’t leave me alone. (She answered curtly.)

BB: Who initiate the conversation?

MN: Him of course. And no, it was not a conversation. I only refused to give him my number. (She responded clearly.)

BB: Maybe the dress you are wearing is too short? (He insinuated before taking off his coat to cover his wife’s knee.)

Mina couldn’t be bothered. Although she always felt touch when Jiwon showed that he cares, she wouldn’t want to be steered emotionally. She handed the cup of juice to him but he told her to hold on to the cup as he drank during the red light. She did and tried to remain calm amidst her fluttering hearts.

MN: Jiwon ah… (She called out to him softly wanting to send signals that their marriage is about to end.)

BB: Uhmmmm…. (He hesitantly responded.)

MN: I want to tell… (She got cut off by Jiwon’s phone ringing.)

Bobby was thankful the phone rang. He was worried when he heard Mina called him by the name of Jiwon. She only calls him that if she has something serious to say. And honestly, Bobby don’t feel like he is ready to hear what she has to say.

He was glad the trip to his mother was just 5 minutes away. When they alight from the car, Jiwon naturally walked beside Mina and held her hands. Mina turned a look surprised.

BB: Why do you look at me like that?

MN: Why are your hands so cold? Are you not well?

BB: Just a little… (He lied.)

MN: Then we better go off early after dinner so you could rest.

BB: Ara…

Jiwon held her hands tightly making Mina even more confused. She wondered what was up with her husband. As they were eating, Mina noticed that he wasn’t exactly eating. He looks disturbed and upset in her eyes. He also noticed Jinhwan giving Mina the look. He knows about Jinhwan being her lawyer because he met him when they first draft out the marriage agreement. And now he is his brother-in-law. He felt even more nervous to see Mina and Chaeyoung went into the room. He wondered if Mina is going to tell Chaeyoung about everything.

Mina paced up and down her bedroom. It’s been close to 18 hours since she saw Chaeyoung. She knows the girl must be very upset. She recalled the painful conversation and tears trickled down her cheeks.

“Chaeng, I know you are angry but can you please call me back. I’ll be waiting for you.”

Jiwon who just exited the toilet overheard the last part of the voice message by Mina. He saw Mina wiped her tears away and sat on the bed facing the window. He sat beside her in his towel while she fidget with her phone.

BB: Gwencana?

Mina nodded as she pretends to be checking her phone.

BB: I don’t like seeing you cry. (He said softly as he wraps one of his hand around her shoulder.)

Mina naturally leaned in and cry.

BB: Do you want to share anything with me? (Mina shook her head.)

She rested in his embraced in silence for a good 10 minutes. She loves how he smells after shower. She loves leaning on his sturdy shoulders and the warmth exude whenever he hugs her. When she was more composed, she stood up.

MN: You should get ready for work oppa or else you will be late.

BB: Uhmm…. (He felt the hug was too short. He wanted her to be in his arms longer.)

Mina shrug the thought of being in his arms but was thankful for that few minutes that she was.

Mina and Chaeyoung sat on Mina’s bed as they cried their hearts out.

CYG: After all these years, do you even ever have any feelings for my brother?

MN: Of course, I did. I love him even before we got married. But Chaeng, a deal is still a deal.

CYG: I can’t believe you kept this hidden from me.

MN: I didn’t mean to.

CYG: Don’t you want to know if Oppa loves you too?

MN: He doesn’t.

CYG: How sure are you?

MN: If he loves me, he wouldn’t be sleeping with someone else. Every single time he brought a girl home, you don’t know how hard it is for my heart. Every single time I heard the woman screamed in pleasure, I felt like my soul is ripped apart.

CYG: You should have told me. I could have done something.

MN: Nothing you can do will change our mind. We signed on the agreement. We promised not to involve anyone else. And I am only telling you because the time has come.

CYG: You hurt me, unnie. How could you?

MN: Mianhe Chaeng…. It was none of our faults. Our parents were just too eager to get us married.

CYG: So, you really won’t be telling oppa about leaving.

MN: Uhuh…. Sweetheart, I said to him before that when the time has come. I will leave and let the lawyers deal with everything as we move on with our lives.

Mina was reading a book when Jiwon entered the room. He looks upset. He dropped his briefcase on the sofa in the room and headed to the shower. Mina wondered what could have happened. Once he was out of the shower, he dried his hair before slipping in under the duvet.

MN: Have you taken your dinner?

BB: No... (He responded faintly.)

MN: Do you want me to heat up dinner?

BB: No need. It’s okay. I don’t have any appetite.

MN: What’s wrong oppa?

BB: Ani… Can you switch off the lights please? I just want to get some sleep. Maybe you can read in the study. (He genuinely suggested.)

Mina switched off the lights but also joined him in bed. She has questions to ask but since he doesn’t seem to be in the mood, she decided to just leave it at that. 5 minutes has passed yet Mina could put her eyes to sleep. She was just contemplating if she should drink a cup of warm milk. Before she could even make up her mind, she felt his arm around her waist and his head leaning close to the back of her neck.

She knew she is going to miss this. This short random moments when Bobby is affectionate with her. She couldn’t help but felt sad about their upcoming separation.

D-9

Kim Jiwon watch the back of his wife who was preparing breakfast. Many things are going through his head. He loves watching her in the kitchen. He loves her cooking. He loves the way she ties her pony tail. And he especially loves the way when she smiles at him in the morning.

MN: You’re up early today.

BB: Uhuh, you made my favourite breakfast.

MN: Yup…. Bacon and eggs served with toasted bagels and cream cheese.

BB: Thank you sweetheart. You know I SWEAR I can eat this forever. (He exclaims enthusiastically.)

MN: I know you love this. It is simple to prepare. You could make this anytime.

BB: Why should I make this when I have you to make this yummy brekkie? (His responds startled her.)

Mina’s heart skipped a beat. She smiles as she watches him eat.

BB: Babe, let’s go on a short weekend trip.

MN: You mean tomorrow?

BB: Uhuh… I am just tired. The workload has piled up and I could use a good break. (He slips in the idea.)

MN: But a weekend trip would even be more tiring for you.

BB: Well how about Sat to Tues. I could get leave for Monday and Tuesday.

MN: Where do you even want to go?

BB: Lets head to Jeju!

MN: I don’t know if that is a good idea. I am not that sure.

BB: Please…

In his heart, he wasn’t evens sure why he is doing all this. Was he the one who wanted the relationship to end in the first place? He wondered why he is feeling all these different feelings. He fears about how his life would be when Mina is gone.

He didn’t think he love his wife but he sure know that he cares for her. He wanted some good memories with Mina. He wanted to spend time with her. Relax with her and be with her for these couple of days. Why? He doesn’t even know why.

D-3

It was their last night in Jeju. Jiwon hates the nagging feeling he has in his heart. True, they had fun fishing, cruising and pretty much chilling with each other but as the final day of their holiday approaches, he began to feel even more upset and he doesn’t know why.

He went to his side of the huge majestic bed and sat quietly watching Mina read. He knows he will miss this. He will miss looking at his wife engrossed with a good book. He decided to lie his head on her lap. His mere action startled his wife.

BB: Don’t mind me… I just feel like lying here.

Mina couldn’t respond. After she realizes the light snores, she softly runs through her fingers on his hair. She loves it when Jiwon becomes affectionate with her. Sadly she knows or believe it is not because of love. As she traced his prominent cheekbone, Mina count the many blessings she has. She was thankful that he has never once hurt her physically. She eats well, has more clothes than one could ask for. The only thing she doesn’t get from him is his heart.

 

D-2

As he reached out for his pyjamas in the wardrobe, his heart sank. He could count the number of clothes left. He stared into his wardrobe before moving to the sides. Mina who just entered the bedroom could see Jiwon staring aimlessly.

MN: Hun are you okay?

He lets it get to him. He just walked away and told her he won’t be home that night. Mina knew that he wasn’t in the best of mood. However, she interprets it that he couldn’t wait to gain his freedom. She cried herself to sleep that night feeling disappointed that he felt that way.

D-1

Mina decided to cook his favourite dinner. She thought she would want to part with good feelings and a meal should be good enough. After waiting for close to 4 hours, she realized that he may not return home after all. She recalled her own wish of not wanting to say goodbye. She thought maybe, just maybe he was just fulfilling his wish. She waited by the sofa as she watches the mundane rerun of The Heirs. She immediately got on her feet when she heard the door unlocked. Just when she was about to greet him, she saw that he is with company. A beautiful lady who matches well with her husband. Jiwon dismisses Mina with a swish of his fingers signalling that he has an with him that night.

Mina gently smiled as she moves quickly back to her room. Only god knows how hard it is for her to carve that smile. As Jiwon makes his way up to the guest room, he squeezed a glance on the dining table and saw that she had prepared his favourite dinner. He felt really bad but not bad enough to realize how much he has hurt her.

As Mina steps in the room, she quickly locks the door as tears trickled down her face like a broken faucet. She thought, she really thought that he would be gracious enough to make nice memories as they end the marriage but she thought wrong. She took out her suitcase and fill it with whatever clothes she has left. She stepped into the bathroom and took her toiletries. She took a look around the room ensuring that there is nothing left of her. It was already 1 am in the morning. Mina finally had the courage to call the cab because she wouldn’t want to disturb the driver. She brought herself to a hotel nearest to the airport because she thought that its best if she could just buy the earliest flight tickets to Japan.

The moment she checks in, she fell to the floor and burst into tears. How could he? How could he hurt her like this? How could she allow herself to be hurt? After getting herself composed, she eventually brings herself to purchase a flight ticket to Japan and decided that she wants to leave as soon as possible and if 6 am flight was the earliest, then so be it.

D-Day

She sat calmly as she looks out the window of the plane. She couldn’t wait to go back to her late mother’s birth place. She needs peace. She needs time to herself. As the plane embarked, Mina softly said goodbye to heartaches.

It was normal for Jiwon to wake up alone. But this time round he was up much earlier although he worked hard with an throughout the night. He wanted to at least taste the dinner Mina had prepared. As he stepped into the kitchen, his maid was already just clearing the table. As she clears the untouched food from the plate and into the trash bag, he was disappointed that he didn’t get to eat what Mina had prepared. He thought about asking her to make dinner and this time he will have it with her. Sort of a makeup dinner. The maids greeted him. While he reached for a bottle of water, his heart received the first worrying news.

MDS: It is so unlike Ma’am to be up late. Is Ma’am unwell sir?

BB: Maybe… (He answered feeling a little disturbed.)

As he stepped into his bedroom, the first things he was shocked was to find an empty frame that holds their wedding picture. He began to breathe rapidly. He saw the destroyed picture in the rubbish bin. He opened his wardrobe to find the attire for the day but was coldly presented with a wardrobe that is half empty. As he opened the drawers, he no longer sees any clothes belonging to her. He took a deep breath and entered the toilet. He was greeted with only his set of toiletries. It finally sank in to him. She left. She really left without saying goodbye.

He stood under the shower wondering why he was such an to her. In his head, he would head to the lawyer’s office to find out if they have heard from her. However, before he could even do that, he was greeted by his mother’s angered face when he stepped out of the toilet.

BBM: Get dress and meet me downstairs.

For a moment, Jiwon thought maybe Mina is downstairs with them. Maybe she broke her end of the promise but all he saw the living room was his parents angry face, a crying sister and a serious looking brother-in-law.

JW: Hyung, I came here as Mina’s lawyer.

Bobby’s heart skipped a beat.

JW: I have already distributed the letters Mina left for your parents and sister. Here is the divorce document. You will have to sign this.

BBM: How could you Jiwon! Even after 4 years of marriage, don’t tell me you have no feelings for her at all?

BB: Mum… this was an arranged marriage. (He defended himself.)

BBF: You did not object to it.

BB: I wouldn’t want to disappoint you.

BBF: But you had the heart to put a woman through that. She is your sister’s best friend. YOU WERE HER FRIEND, KIM JIWON!

CYG: Oma, nothing you say is going to change his mind.

BBM: Jinhwan, I can’t believe you hid this from us.

JW: Mianhe, I was her legal representative first. I have to protect my client’s legal rights.

CYG: Forget it oma, this marriage can no longer be salvage. With Mina out of this country, I see no hope for them.

BB: Excuse me? Chaeng… what did you say?

CYG: I have no mood to repeat myself.

BB: Kim Chaeyoung… (He walked up to her and shook her shoulders making Jinhwan close to throwing a punch at him.)

JW: Hyung, don’t make this anymore difficult. Just sign the document.

BB: Chaeng… what did you say? Mina left the country?

CYG: Why shouldn’t she? You broke her ing heart. She loves you for goodness sake. She loves you from the moment she met you. How could you even offer her such a life on your wedding night?

Jiwon was taken aback. He slumped onto the sofa. Mina loves him?

BB: Was there a letter for me?

JW: No. Only for your parents and Chaeng. Now please sign the documents. You promised her freedom.

BB: I did?

3 Years Later

After harvesting some seasonal vegetables, Mina went around the quaint small town and bought some fresh seafood. She will be having guest tonight at her cottage inn. So, a proper meal will be best served for one of her very trusted customer.

When she returns to her Inn, she was greeted her favourite guest who was just checking in with her assistant.

SN: Sharon-san, Mr and Mrs Lee is here.

Mina gave the elderly couple a hug. The couple has been to her inn for about 3 times because they love the tranquillity of the place.

LEE: Hi Sharon, I am having a guest over for dinner tonight.

MRSLEE: Hey I thought we are here to relax?

LEE: Just one meeting. I promise.

SN: You could use the living room area for your meeting.

MN: Thank you Sana-chan. I will be preparing dinner tonight. I believe I could trust you to settle everything here.

Sana nodded at her cousin who ever so ready to step in the kitchen.

As Jiwon’s driver dropped him in front of the inn, he couldn’t help but stare at the cosiness of the cottage inn. In his heart, Mina would have love such a place. He shook off that thought and was greeted by the ever friendly Mr Lee.

LEE: I see you have taken a liking to this place.

BB: I actually did. More like my wife actually love such inns.

LEE: I didn’t even know you are married.

BB: There are many things you didn’t know about me.

The smell of home envelops the living room. As he settles and talk business, his eyes couldn’t step but wander around. Mina on the other hand was preparing dinner with so much patience. At the dining table, she plated the food neatly and Mrs Lee admired the young lady’s work.

MRSLEE: I am sure any man who marries you will be lucky.

MN: You are making me shy.

As Jiwon and Mr Lee enters the dining room, he couldn’t help but stare at a back of the woman who just entered the kitchen.

LEE: That’s Sharon the owner.

BB: I see... Is she local?

LEE: I should think so. She speaks perfect Japanese.

MRSLEE: And she speaks…English and …. Oh dear…. You did not zip your pants dear husband.

Mr and Mrs Lee laughed at his silliness. Bobby envied the couple.

LEE: I hope simple home-cooked meal is good enough for you.

BB: Yes, it sure is.

As Jiwon tucks in his food, he was surprised by how familiar it tasted. A melancholic feel smothers his heart.

MRSLEE: Are you not liking the food?

BB: I actually love it. I have never missed home-cooked food as much as this.

LEE: Wait till you try her special breakfast, what was it called honey?

MRSLEE: To Hubby with Love…

BB: Seriously? That sounded cheesy.

LEE: A cheesy breakfast it is. You should stay the night if you want to try. I bet a night’s sleep here is a good sleep away from the city.

BB: Maybe I should.

LEE: Sana-chan… Sana-chan… (He called out to her.)

MN: Sana went off already… so it’s just me at …. (She stopped talking when she sees his face.)

Jiwon stares at her intensely. She wasn’t sure if it’s a look that she was expecting. Mina couldn’t believe her eyes. The man who hurt her one too many times was seated with her guest at the dining table.

LEE: Sharon…. Sharon…. (The old man called out to Mina.)

MN: Yes…

LEE: Do you know my guest? (He asked after looking at their shocked expression.)

MRSLEE: It sure does seems like it.

MN/BB: No/Yes (They answered simultaneously.)

LEE: Yes or No?

Bobby looked at his wife, ex-wife to be more accurate with great interest. He wonders if she will continue to deny.

MN: We sort of knew each other.

LEE: Well that is great then. You sure wouldn’t mind arranging a last-minute accommodation for Mr Kim here.

MN: Accommodation?

MRSLEE: Yes child, I recommended him the breakfast and he would like to try it.

MN: Oh sure, I will get to it...Would you want me to serve desserts now?

LEE: Yes please… What are we having for desserts tonight?

MN: Just a simple raspberry panna Cota.

MRSLEE: Thank you my child.

Mina headed to the kitchen as she wipes her tears away. Just when she is able to move on, he has to reappear again.

Once dinner was over, Mina escorts the 3 guests to the upper floor of her cottage house. After the Lees went into their room, she opened the door for Jiwon.

MN: Mr Kim, here is your room. Your toilet amnesties are already placed in the bathroom.

BB: Wouldn’t you want to show me the facilities in the room?

MN: Sure… (She obliged.) On your left is the wardrobe. And coat hanger. The bed linen was just put together. Don’t worry it’s a 1500 thread count.

BB: Ash… you remembered I like soft linen.

MN: Here is the toilet. The amnesties on the sink is made from rose and lavender. It is hand made. It’s gentle on the skin. So that’s all for the facilities. (She ended quickly as she heads for the door.)

BB: Mina ah… You didn’t say goodbye.

Mina hearts sank.

MN: I did. You were just too busy to notice. (She answered curtly before closing the door.)

Jiwon tossed on turn on his bed. What an irony? With such comfortable mattress and soothing linen. He couldn’t put himself to sleep. He decided to take a walk around the inn. He should have known better that his wife, or should I say ex-wife love such simple life.

He made his way down quietly but the creaks on some of the wood panels was enough to make him worry if he woke anyone up. As he steps into the dining area, he was a little alarm that the kitchen lights were switched on. He knocked on the door and entered before being invited in.

MN: What are you doing here? It’s close to 1 in the morning.

BB: I cannot sleep.

MN: You can help yourself to the drinks in the fridge. Goodnight. (She excused herself.)

Jiwon on the other hand couldn’t help but held on to her wrist.

BB: Can you make me some warm milk with honey. The kind you made to help me fall asleep.

MN: I am sure you can make it yourself.

BB: Mina ah…. (He called her out softly as he pouts.)

Mina hates that he still has that effect on her.

He stood near her as she warms the milk.

BB: Have you been well?

MN: I have. I am sure you can see.

BB: I haven’t been too well since you’ve gone.

Mina knew. Chaeyoung and Jinhwan kept her updated. The first few months were especially tough. She remembered how Chaeng describes Jiwon being hospitalized due to malnourished and dehydration. She almost packed her bags and head back to Korea. There was also that time when he keeps on getting fever because he said he missed her so much.

BB: Do you hear what I said?

MN: I did. I am glad you look and feel much better now.

BB: Is the beach far from here? I really love the smell of the sea.

MN: It’s just a couple minutes’ walk. You can follow the cobblestone path way from the back door. It will bring you to the beach. But it’s late I suggest, you could do it in the morning because its cold and windy now.

BB: It’s okay. The cold doesn’t bother me anyway except the coldness I get from you.

Mina poured the warm milk into a big mug and left him cold in the kitchen. As for Jiwon, he steps out the back door and make his way to the beach. As Mina lies her head on the pillow, all she could think of was how thin Jiwon is. She honestly thought Chaeyoung was making things up but apparently not.

The next morning, Jiwon joined the Lee’s for breakfast. He couldn’t miss that. As he enjoyed the food served, everything just clicks. The food was dedicated to him. Sadly, the cold is starting to get to him. He started sneezing and looking pale.

Mina was topping up the fresh oranges onto the Lee’s glasses but skipped Jiwon’s glass. She went into the kitchen and made a warm cup of honey lemon and brought it out for him.

LEE: If you weren’t married, I would have match make the both of you together. Sharon is such a sweet girl.

MN: He is married? (She asked curiously.)

BB: Yes, I am to Myoui Mina. That is my wife’s name.

MN: Well you guys divorce if memory serves me right.

BB: Well not anymore. See I still have the wedding ring. And I am sure you still have yours. (He questions her shaking her guard.)

MN: Well, I believe she has thrown it out far away.

LEE: Do the both of you know who Mina is? (They asked wondering who the hell is Mina.)

MRSLEE: I am sure there is an explanation for all this.

LEE: Sharon, maybe you got the wrong person.

BB: No, she got it right…. She just wouldn’t admit it.

Jiwon was just about to say something when he almost fainted due to the fever he was experiencing. The Lee’s were a little surprise by the morning outburst but they kind of put two and two together and have some idea of what is going on.

Jiwon woke up a little when he felt a needle through his skin. He was greeted by a handsome doctor. Although he couldn’t remember much, he swore he saw the doctor giving Mina a warm embrace. A couple of hours later, he was awakened by a cold towel on his fore head. He saw Mina sponging him and his jealousy got the best of him.

BB: You should go to the doctor. I am just your ex-husband.

MN: Keep quiet. You’re sick.

BB: Please leave. The longer you hang around me, the harder it is for me to forget you. (He sulked as he turns around and closed his eyes.)

MN: Don’t be such a baby. I will leave when you’re better.

BB: You would? You seemed ready to leave me.

MN: I don’t want to fight with you. Why don’t you just rest?

He would want to talk more but he felt a little weak. By the time he opened his eyes, he was alone in the room. He walked down the stair and saw the Lee’s at the living room.

LEE: Oh dear, are you feeling better?

BB: Yes, much better. Feeling a little hungry though.

Sana greeted him at the dining room. She served warm porridge with kimchi. A comfort food that Jiwon wanted so much. As his eyes wanders around the room. He wonders where is Mina’s room.

SN: Mina is resting. Do you need anything? (She asked genuinely in Korean.)

BB: You speak Korean?

SN: I do.

BB: Mina have taught you well.

SN: She did… Besides my husband taught me well too.

BB: Oh. your husband is Korean.

SN: Yes, he is. His name is Hanbin.

BB: What does he do for a living?

SN: He is a doctor. I believe you met him in the afternoon when he gave you your injection.

BB: Oh… that is him.

SN: Yup…

BB: Do you kind of know who am I to Mina?

SN: I do… You are her ex-husband.

BB: Oh, so she told you about me.

2^nd Chances Are Rare

Mina was in the kitchen preparing breakfast. She refuses to walk out to the dining room. However, the Lee’s made it hard for her to refuse. It was awkward to say the least. Everything started off quietly until Mr Lee opened his mouth.

LEE: I assumed that both of you were husband and wife.

MN: Yes, we were.

MRSLEE: Bobby, why do you still have your wedding ring?

BB: Regret… I regret every second of my life since I hurt her.

LEE: Oh dear… That is a hard life to live.

MN: Well at least we are both free from all of that feelings. Aren’t we?

MRSLEE: Sharon dear… or shall I call you Mina…. Don’t you miss him at all? Can’t whatever happened to the both of you be remedied? From the looks of it, you still love him a lot. (The old lady asked making Bobby smile.)

MN: I have moved on with life. I believe he has too. So, let’s not talk about the past.

LEE: If you say so. But my dear child, don’t have live a life full of regrets. Second chance are hard to come by. Don’t let it slip away from you. (He advises her subtly not wanting to offend Mina.)

MRSLEE: So, Bobby are you leaving today?

BB: I don’t want to but I don’t want to hurt her more. So, I will call up my driver to pick me up.

MRSLEE: Have a safe trip. Mr Lee and I will be out touring the town.

BB: Will do…

I Miss You

Mina was resting in her room. She knew that Jiwon will leave soon and she hopes not to see him at all. Or at least that was what she thought. She was laying down on her bed reading a After You by JoJo Moyes. She thought Sana knocked on the door and without doubt asked the person to enter her room.

When Jiwon opens the door, Mina was startled that she immediately got back on her feet.

MN: Why are you here?

BB: Can we talk? Just for a short while. (He assured her.)

MN: Sure, have a seat. (She directed him to the sofa.)

BB: You may not know but I am very happy to see you.

MN: Ah… me too. It is nice to see that you are well. (She responded genuinely.)

BB: I wanted to say something. Not to impress you or what but I honestly do miss you. I am sorry that I made life difficult for you. I was inconsiderate of your feelings.

MN: Well the past is the past. I am sure you are happier now.

BB: Me? Happier? Mina…. I regret every second of life since you left.

MN: Well what is done is done.

BB: I don’t want to force you to accept me or anything. But…

MN: But….?

BB: Will it be okay if I come here every 2 weeks or so?

MN: For?

BB: To recharge…

MN: Up to you… I don’t care.

6 Months Later

Mina was rolling around on her bed. She was upset because for the first 5 month, Bobby did indeed return every fortnight. Although they don’t really say much to each other, Mina will look forward for his visit. She will cook all his favourite dishes. They would hang out in the living room reading together though not say a word to each other.

Then, no, he has not turned up for almost a month. While she understands that his perseverance may not last long with her being a little cold. She thought he has changed. Maybe she hopes for too much. She took out the wedding photo from her drawer and stares at his pictures. How could he look so good? How could such a handsome man break her heart? And for the first time in many years, Mina teared again.

The morning sunshine ray was enough to warm her cold room. Mina snuggles into a huge pair of arms. She loves the smell and warmth. How could Jiwon smell this good and be so warm? She snuggles even closer and felt a kiss on her forehead.

“I wish this dream would never end…” she said it out loud.

For some reason, she could feel kisses around her face. She could feel the embrace tightening around her body. As her eyes flickered open, she comes face to face with Kim Jiwon.

BB: Good morning…. (He greeted her.)

MN: Good morning….

When she finally gathered her thoughts, she wanted to pull away but Bobby pull her into a huge hug.

BB: Let’s just stay like this 10 minutes more…. Please… (He begs her.)

Mina gave in. She eventually relaxes her body as he hugs her. As she rests her face on his chest, Jiwon was just playing with her hair.

MN: Why are you here? (She finally opens not caring about the 10 minutes.)

BB: Because I miss you.

MN: You did not.

BB: Yes, I did.

MN: You were not here for a month. (She started whining in tears.)

Jiwon pulled her chin up and comes face to face with a crying Mina.

BB: Please don’t cry. I have my reasons. I need to make arrangement to move here. It wasn’t easy to convince dad that I wanted to move to Japan. When I finally told him that I want to be here with you, mum and dad was so happy that they agree to this arrangement immediately. I had a hard time convincing Chaeng. She was still angry with me.

MN: You wanted to move to Japan?

BB: Yup, I will direct the Japanese office in Tokyo. This way, I could come back here more often to recharge.

MN: Why would you do that? You have a life in Korea. (She affectionately asked as her finger play with the buttons on his shirt.)

BB: Life is gone when you left. I am not asking you to come back to me but can you please let me see you. I really miss you. (He pleaded as he tightened his embrace.)

MN: Why did you crept in my room? You know there are many bedrooms upstairs.

BB: Shiro... I don’t know whether you have guest or not.

MN: Well, you could have woken me up. (She pokes his chest.)

BB: Ani… why would I… besides when I see you holding on to our wedding picture, I BELIEVE that you miss me too. So, I decided to sleep just beside you. Thankfully you started embracing Me.

MN: No, I did not.

BB: Yes, you did my dear.

MN: Maybe I was just dreaming that’s all. (She pouts.)

BB: Don’t pout…

MN: It’s my face. I can pout anytime that I want.

Jiwon pulls her chin closer before leaning in to plant a kiss on her lips. His heart raced wondering if she would accept his kiss. As their eyes met, Mina could feel the sincerity. It took her a moment before opening and welcoming his tongue as they battle the passion ignited.

BB: That is our first kiss. A proper kiss I meant aside from all the kisses I stole from you.

MN: You did?

BB: When you were asleep…

MN: Do you think, we’ll ever make it through?

BB: Let’s try hard.

MN: Should we?

Jiwon continue to kiss her as he assures her and for the first time in years, Mina felt her life was complete and Jiwon felt she is the piece of puzzle missing in his life.

Sometimes, two people have to fall apart and be apart to realize how much they need to fall back together.
