Chapter One

The Other Side of Paradise

    Yoongi hates driving.

It's something he had learned to do many years ago, but since then, he had tried his best to avoid it. He was lucky enough to find an apartment close to almost everything, most importantly his work and school. He lived only ten minutes from campus, which resulted in him walking to class nearly everyday. His roommate gave him for never using his car, since he was lucky enough to have one. Yoongi didn't mind saving the gas money and headaches.

As much as he hates driving, he does realize it's inevitable.

Like when he found himself traveling down the highway, already feeling pain behind his skull. If people weren't going too fast, they weren't going fast enough. Everyone was an idiot in Yoongi's eyes. Beyond the constant annoyances outside of the car, he also had to deal with a wimpering puppy the entire trip. The small, brown poodle that sat in the passenger's seat was curled up in a ball, but for whatever reason, would not stop crying. The puppy, which his brother had named Holly, was the newest addition to the Min family. Yoongi, not living at home, didn't have much say in the decision, as he was under the impression he wasn't going to have to take any responsibility for him. Yet, here he was, driving the small, scared dog to the vet.

His mother had called the night before to ask a favor of her son. She was supposed to drop Holly off at the vet for an overnight stay the next day, but in a recent change at work, nobody was able to take him. Yoongi only had one class on Thursdays, and had absolutely no reason not to take him. So, he agreed.

And of course he was supposed to be there in the middle of rush hour.

Yoongi tried to focus on the music the best he could, but the high pitch squeaking coming from the beside him was driving him insane. He would occasionally reach over, attempting to calm the crying pup, but it made no difference. He continued to cry, and Yoongi could see his knuckles turning white on the steering wheel as they sat at the red light. He tried turning the music up even louder, hoping to drown out the whimpers that filled the car, but it didn't help much, either. Instead, he was met with the sound of the dog crying mixed into the annoying, up-beat pop song that was now blasting through the speakers.

The music itself wasn't too terrrible; it was well put together and fit well for day-time radio. The irritating part, to Yoongi, anyway, was the lyrics. Nearly every song on the radio now was about love, but the sad ones weren't played nearly as often. This one only talked about finding true love and living happily ever after: something Yoongi honestly wanted no part of, so he switched the station.

It wasn't that Yoongi was a pessimist, at least, he didn't consider himself to be one. If he had to put it into any certain terms, he would say he's a realist. He sees through the bull in life. Others have told him plenty of times how he was always negative, and that he should learn to lighten up and not always see the worst in everything. He tried to argue at first, but he quickly gave up on trying to make them see the world how he saw it; long and unfulfilling, with too much fake happiness spreading like a disease. Yoongi decided a long time ago that he would rather be himself than impose a persona around his friends and family. There was no reason for him to be overly happy and content with the world, especially if it wasn't giving him much to work with in return.

After ten more minutes of driving, they finally pulled into the parking lot of the veterinarian's office. Holly's cries quieted, but just barely, after Yoongi shut the car off. He reached over and picked up the small puppy, and once he was safely in his arms, the screaming stopped.

He pet the top of his head a few times, and Holly wagged his tail in response. Yoongi wasn't generally a dog person. He would almost definitely choose a cat over a dog; they're cleaner, less needy, and quieter. This seemed exceedingly irritating because Holly wasn't just a dog; he was a puppy. He was extra needy, extra messy, and extra noisy.

This doesn't mean that Yoongi is heartless; he still loves animals, he just doesn't want the added responsibility.

"Alright, let's get this over with, boy." Holly squirmed in his arms, waiting to be set free from his grip. Yoongi got out of the car after setting the puppy down on the concrete. He wrapped the attached leash around his hand and made his way to the door. Holly, still learning how to walk on a leash, stumbled beside him, and even Yoongi couldn't help but smile at how cute he looked.

The veterinarians office was really just a large house with a parking lot instead of a driveway. It looked cozy, homey, and the complete opposite of any professional medical building Yoongi had ever seen. The outside was pale yellow and was surrounded by bushes with colorful flowers. There were small bulldog statues on either side of a long, brown bench on the front porch, connected to the parking lot by a short, curvy sidewalk. A tall, slim cat statue sat beside the door, which only had a sign that stated the office hours and a small decal that read 'Animal Wellness Center'.

Yoongi opened the door, a small bell ringing throughout the inside. Holly galloped along beside him, sniffing his surroundings eagerly as they made their way to the front counter. Although the outside looked like a normal house, the inside had been renovated to acommidate benches and a front counter. It was obvious they tried to somewhat mask the smell of all the pets with air fresheners and candles. It ended up making the place smell of a mix of lavender and wet dog. The interior design made up for the inevitable smell, however. The walls inside were a soft, powder blue, with pictures of animals posted everywhere. Yoongi walked past the small bookshelf of pet care products that sat beside one of two cushioned benches. There was only one other person in the lobby: a small, old lady, presumably waiting for her animal to be brought out to her, as she sat completely alone. There was one lady behind the counter, her face only coming into view as Yoongi approached the counter. The top of the counter came up to Yoongi's chest, but the opposite side sat lower, as a desk for the receptionist. The woman sat behind a computer screen, but immediately looked up when he was in arms distance.

"Hello! What can I do for you?" She smiled sweetly, her small, dark eyes crunching into crecents moons. She was cute, even in her scrubs and her hair pulled back neatly. Her voice was charming and angelic, but Yoongi couldn't help but wonder if she was being genuine.

"Um, My mom told me to bring her dog..." Yoongi reached down and picked up Holly, who was still searching his immediate surroundings excitedly. He didn't seem happy being inturrupted from his exploration. He squirmed in Yoongi's arms, only for a brief second, before succumbing to his grip. The lady smiled upon seeing Holly, reaching out to pet him, which he reciprocated by her hand. She turned to her computer and asked for his mother's information, typing quickly on the keyboard.

Holly adjusted himself in Yoongi's arms, finding a comfortable position while being cradled. Yoongi pet him a few times, thankful that he was at least half way behaving himself, unlike the car ride.

"Oh my God! Hello cutie! What's your name?" The sudden burst came from around the corner, from the hallway connected behind the counter. Yoongi watched as a man in yellow scrubs walked toward him excitedly, his pace quickening as he rounded the front counter. Yoongi couldn't help but stare, wide-eyed in confusion as the tall, thin man reached out to pet Holly, completely disregarding the fact that he was being held by another person. He never made eye-contact with him, as he was completely focused on petting Holly and letting the excited ball of fur kiss his hands and wiggle excitedly.

"Uh, his name's Holly." For the first time since he entered the room, the employee looked up at Yoongi, almost surprised that the answer came from a person and not Holly himself. He brushed a stray strand of light brown hair out of his eyes, and his face softened into the most genuine and lively smile Yoongi had ever seen on a person. His heart shaped mouth bared perfectly straight, shiny teeth. His large, dark eyes transformed into crescents. Yoongi couldn't help but be in awe as he watched the sunshine travel through the man's expression.

"He's adorable! How long have you had him?" He motioned to ask to hold Holly, his questioning expression asking for permission. Yoongi didn't have to put much effort into handing the dog to him; Holly was nearly leaping into his arms. The man's beaming smile returned as Holly jumped around in his arms, trying his best to at his face. Although his hands were occupied with Holly, the stranger didn't look away from Yoongi, and he was suddenly aware how the intensity of the man's stare. He wasn't sure if it was his chipper, extroverted personality or his bright, distracting smile, but Yoongi immediately anxious.

"He's not mine. He's my mother's. He's still pretty young, but I, uh, don't really remember when they got him." Thankfully, he didn't continue the conversation; instead, he turned his full attention to Holly. Yoongi was thankful to have his eyes off of him.

He listened as the stranger began to talk to Holly, his voice distorting into a million different baby voices. Holly's tail couldn't wag any faster and the man looked just as happy having a completely one-sided conversation with a puppy. Yoongi couldn't help the small grin spreading across his face, watching the two of them interact in such a loving and endearing way. The lady behind the counter cleared , and Yoongi spun his head around. She stood with her hand on a clipboard on the counter, slightly pushing it in his direction.

"I just need you to sign this, please." Yoongi apologized quickly, taking the papers. He scanned them quickly and signed his name at the bottom, acutely aware of the baby talk conversation happening beside him. He handed the clipboard back to the lady and she smiled sweetly.

"Do you want to take him back?" She turned her attention to the man still playing with Holly. He stopped talking in his baby voice and turned to her, nodding happily.

"Where's he going?" He asked, walking closer to the counter and closer to Yoongi, who shifted half a step to the side so he could peer over.

"312." He nodded at the seemingly useless information and turned his body toward Yoongi.

"Say goodbye! We'll be here tomorrow, waiting for you!" The man talked as though he was talking to the dog, but was very directly speaking to Yoongi. A smile spread across his face as he motioned for the handle of the leash. Yoongi put the rope in his hand, and reached out to pet Holly. Yoongi smiled back at the stranger, who then winked in response. Before Yoongi could even process what had happened, the man his heels and walked back down the hallway he came from, petting Holly the entire way. It was nearly impossible not to watch him until he was out of his line of sight.

Yoongi thanked the woman behind the counter quickly, fully aware of his redding cheeks. He shoved his hands into his pockets, fiddling with his keys as he hurried out to his car. He wasn't sure if he would ever see that guy again, but he was sure he wasn't going to forget about him anytime soon. Some people are just great at first impressions. Yoongi isn't one of them, but this guy was; he didn't even have to try.

The ride home consisted of obnoxiously loud music to drown out most of Yoongi's thoughts, until he got a phone call from his roommate. He practically begged for Yoongi to pick up some takeout for dinner, as he didn't want to cook. There was a quick but ultimately useless argument about how they don't really have the money to be eating out again, then he was detouring to their usual takeout resturaunt. He had a decent conversation with the owner about a decently popular drama (the only drama Yoongi will watch) while he waited for their food.

The rest of the evening went as painstakingly slow and uneventful as Yoongi was expecting. He didn't have to be at work, but he had more homework than he thought was possible. He ate quickly, not even finishing his entire meal and opting to save it for later, and began to slowly but surely move through the pile of worksheets and reading assignments. After quite a few hours, his food completely gone after a much needed break, he finally found the end of the tunnel.

He wanted to lay on his bed and go to sleep, as it was nearing midnight. He felt his eyelids growing heavy and his muscles aching for relaxation, but his brain wouldn't slow down. He wasn't one to lay in bed until his wondering mind complied so he could sleep; so naturally, he found his way to his keyboard across the room.

Yoongi's initial plan was to continue a piece he had been trying to finish for months. He tried his best to concentrate, but his brain had picked up a melody that he couldn't get out of his mind. It had been bothering him most of the day, assuming he had heard it on the radio at some point. He still wasn't entirely sure where it had come from, but he found himself writing for a good couple of hours, definitely longer than he expected when he sat down. He was going to be the closest thing to a zombie for his 9:00 AM class, but Yoongi always had extra money to spare on coffee.
