Once In A Lifetime

Sailing (That Summer)

"Stay together sailing into the night
For you, who made the deep
Darkness in all the sea turn pink
Again and again and again."

Nine years had passed since the last time I saw you. I'm actually doing great, now that I own the biggest and most trusted hospital in South Korea. I also have a business contract with the Byun Corporation that owns the largest airport in the States.

And fortunately, I'm married to their son, and have two kids.

I sighed as I whip my hair over my shoulder, cocking my head to the side. I looked through the glass window in my office and view the outskirts of town.

It's nice to see everything fine around me.

How about you? Are you doing well?

"Even over the years
I won't be shaken
I won't stop like the radiant."

I sipped my coffee and fixed my glasses. I was currently shifting through pages in a newspaper, that I felt someone sat across me.

I slowly looked up as I closed what I was holding.

I felt numb when are eyes met.

"It's been a long time, don't you think?"

I was stunned.

How come you still look the same over the past years that passed by.

I was relieved that our talk didn't get so awkward. You're still noisy as ever, making me do the same and laugh at almost everything.

I didn't want to ask, really. But you insisted on telling me.

You broke up with him after being chained in your relationship for three years.

I can only imagine how you survived that living hell.

You explained to me how sorry you were the night you pushed me away, how our friendship ended within a blink.

I only smiled in understanding.

"That summer."

It rained that night and we waited inside my office until it stopped. Simultaneously, my husband and children came to fetch me.

I hugged them as my husband kissed me on the cheek, greeting me a nice evening.

The thought of you rushed to my mind and I stood up while carrying my youngest child.

We just stared at each other as I noticed the shock in your eyes, your lips trembled at the sight.

I introduced you to my family and the three of them was glad to see you.

"Taeyeon told me a lot of things about you."

My husband just have to say that, and you chuckled while looking at my direction.

I'm not embarrassed; after all, you were once my best friend. You've played an important role in my past.

"I won't change like the
Unchanging wish every summer ."

After a week, you told me you're flying off to California to handle your business.

As always, you're going for fashion.

You called me the night before to meet up and have a little talk.

I didn't hesitate because I know I have to say goodbye anyway.

And there you said it. The words I've been wanting to hear.

"I still love you, Taeyeon, my best friend and other half."

You hugged me tightly, but never cry like you usually do when you find comfort.

As you released the hug, you look straight to my blank eyes.

I didn't utter anything, but you broke the silence.

"You still love me, right?"

I didn't know what ran through my head when I said those.

"Of course."

But I don't regret it at all.

"Promise me that we'll be best friends 'till the end, Taeng."

You called me by my nickname again, after nine years of being away.

I'm glad you didn't forget that.

"Promise me."

"I promise."

I know what I said was right. It was the best decision I've made.

I forgave her even after the things that happened in the past.

Because in my heart and soul, she's still my best friend.

"Thank you, Sica."
