Prologue
TetheredPeople say there’s no such thing as true love.
Well, that is just a load of bull in Kibum's opinion.
Why?
Because Kibum and his entire ancestry happen to be guardians of true love, that’s why.
You see, true love is this little, thin but extremely strong and unbreakable red thread connecting one person to another by their left ring fingers. And it is only visible to the Guardians of Love.
Ridiculous name, if he does say so himself.
So there actually is such a thing as true love. You just have to know where to look for it.
That is how Kibum, as a Guardian, comes into the picture. The threads, unbreakable as they are, tangle together sometimes or get caught on things, leading the two intended down the wrong paths.
Now, Kibum doesn’t devote every hour of the day to taking care of the threads, he does have a life, thank you very much. He has school and friends and dreams. It’s just that he goes invisible every now and then (a neat little trick that comes with the Guardian ancestry) and works on taking care of the fate threads a few afternoons and evenings of the week.
It’s like a part-time job – only he doesn’t get paid for it. It’s a good thing one of his ancestors decided to begin a small trading business, which had grown into an entire empire now. It makes being a Guardian so much easier if he doesn’t have to worry about finding a well-paying job and devote all his time to study for it either when he finds tangled messes of fate threads that can take days to clear up. Though he likes studying more than being a Guardian.
Now that he thinks about it, all the families that are Guardians have a long line of businesses, which have grown over time and are supporting each other the world over. Maybe it is something the Guardians agreed upon, a long, long time ago, to make their lives easier? He doesn’t know. Whatever it was, he’s sometimes glad it makes his life easier today. If only because he's expected to devote his life to the threads of fate. If he had the time to study for an actual real job he wouldn't need that kind of safety net.
The thing that , though, is that he, as a Guardian of Love, doesn’t have a red string of his own. Neither do his parents, nor his grandparents, or their parents. And they are all Guardians. It’s another not so neat thing that comes with the ancestry, which means you are required to marry another Guardian to keep the line going. If even the slightest drop of another’s blood mixes with a Guardian’s, the line will die out.
Which makes dating even harder, knowing everyone he falls in love with actually has another person they should be with. His parents and grandparents' disapproval doesn't help much either.
So he simply doesn’t date at all. His parents or grandparents will find another Guardian for him to marry – as is tradition – and it makes the notion of dating even more of a hassle, if he doesn’t have a choice in the end anyway.
When Kibum was still a teenager he hated being a Guardian because of not having a choice in anything regarding his life, but he had come to accept it bit by bit once he entered university. There are worse things in life, he tries to reason more often than he would like to admit.
It would be nice though, to be with someone he actually had fallen in love with before marrying instead of learning to love his spouse after marriage.
A/N: So, here's a prologue for you guys! Hope you enjoyed it!
Okay then, bye~ :)
