CHAPTER ONE | LIKE A FOOL

I hated it already. The way the air stuck to the back of my exposed neck, how bugs saw me as their own personal source of food, and mostly, the endless amount of young adults prancing around the campgrounds with their clipboards, proud abstinence, and continuous swearing that their only boyfriend, was Christ. Simple to say, I might need an actual miracle straight from Heaven to leave this summer of bible studies and eating from tin cans, with all my sanity I’ve been able to keep thus far.

However, all I could do, was put on a casual smile, fold my arms over my chest, and sign into the Camp Once welcoming ceremony. So that is exactly what I was doing.

My single luggage of a backpack slung over my shoulder looked a bit pathetic to the other girls, whom all looked as if they were permanently moving in. But it was all I needed for these three months, so all was good. I was standing in line, behind many other young females, just trying to sign in and get situated. But at the pace that the line was actually moving, I might as well roll out a sleeping bag, and plant myself here for the summer. Oh, but here comes that miracle from before- the line began to slowly, but surely, shuffle towards the tables. Only, the girl who was directly in front of me, failed to move. Which, annoying as it was, I couldn’t blame her if she had zoned out. Might as well catch up on your sleep if you can. I extended my arm, and shyly tapped her shoulder, which was covered by her long, raven-hued hair.
“Hello?” I spoke, chuckling to sound kind. But kind I was, only today, I’m just in a sour humor. I thought I should at least start to cheer up. Better now than never.
”Hey, the line’s moving.” Smiling as I said so, the girl gasped in front of me, and then turned around quickly.

“Oh, I’m so sorry!” She apologized, ripping headphones from her ears. “I guessed I zoned out,” the rather adorable, mousy girl giggled. She seemed sweet. “Thanks, though! I could have stood here all day, listening to Got7.” The nameless girl laughed again, leaning down to grab her bags, and then popping up again and moving forward, and I followed.

“I’m Nayeon,” she nodded, still facing me.
“Ooh, I love Got7!” I could almost feel my eyes lighting up as a smile flew over my face. “And I’m Jeongyeon,” A giggle escaped my lips, as my hand reach up to cover it. It had been too long since somebody was interested in the same things I was, so I would be the worst liar around if I said I wasn’t beginning to enjoy myself.
Nayeon returned my laugh as she ran a hand through her locks, then looking over her shoulder as it finally appeared to be her turn to sign herself in. “Hey, stick around, I can help you find your bunk. This is my third year at Camp Once.”

I nodded an ‘okay’, and watched as she leaned down, gave her name, and filled out papers, and collected small things that were being ushered to her. Nayeon nodded at me, as she slid to the left, and waited, her hands behind her back, and that smile never fading for a second.
It was my turn, so I gave a small smile at the girl behind the table, who returned it happily. “Hi! I’m Jihyo, welcome to Camp Once. Can I have your name, please?” The dyed red-head asked cheerfully, handing me a pen, and leaning over at her files. “Yoo Jeongyeon.” I replied, scribbling my name down, and then standing straight, as Jihyo shuffled through a box.
“Oh, Jeongyeon! You’re in my bunk. Cabin 2. And this is your first year here at Once, it looks like?”
Her joy frightened me, yet comforted me at the same time. Funny how she could do that so easily. I nodded. “Yeah,” I smiled.
“Great. You’ll have a fine time. Why don’t you follow Nayeon, she’s in Cabin 2 as well. I’ll come in to check on you and your bunk-mates after enrollment. See you later, Jeongyeon!” Jihyo said sweetly, handing me a packet, and I smiled back as I took her offering. “Okay, see you!”

I adjusted my backpack, and I made my way over to my new-found friend.

”All set, bowl-cut?” Nayeon giggled as she swiped a hand through my rather short hair, then picking up her bags once again. “Hey!” I exclaimed, laughing it off. Okay, cute and funny. I can deal with this girl befriending me for the summer, in all honesty.

”Yeah, yeah. Let’s go get situated.” I suggested, rolling my eyes playfully as Nayeon gestured with her head for me to follow.

The two of us padded through the dirt and grass, patches of each completing the other, as Nayeon lead the way towards our home sweet home for the next three months. “It’s just over here,” Nayeon explained to me, as we both found a somewhat nicely made stone pathway, leading over to the ring of cabins.
“Well, here you are, Jeongyeon. Cabin 2. Welcome home.” She smiled warmly as she halted in front of the second cabin from the right, marching up the steps, set her things down and pulled the door open for me, and I graciously entered first, not at all startled by her everlasting kindness. As I took my first steps into my shared-home, I immediately noticed three other girls, unpacking, hanging up posters, and making beds. Shyly, I slid over to the nearest corner-bed and spilled my belongings onto the bottom bunk.

”Nayeon!” My head shot up, looking in the direction of the cheerful shrieking. My eyes caught a platinum blonde, her bangs cut straight over her forehead, the style suiting her incredibly well. The teen’s arms were outstretched, rushing over to the darker-haired youngster.
“Momo!” my one and only friend returned the excitement, dropping her things to the middle of the floor, as she jumped into Momo’s arms hugging her tightly. I smiled at the happiness between to two, but I couldn’t lie- I was jealous. My friend had other friends, which was fine, of course, just suddenly I felt left out.

I decided to turn my attention to the other two girls, who were chatting together, both seeming relatively nice as well. One, had short hair as well as I did, but did length more than mine by a few inches. She had an adorably young, round face with a highlighting piece of a button nose. Her features were absolutely charming. The other, seemed closer to my age, with thin lips and small eyes, which worked well for her and her slender face. Both were cute, which I could only hope bled into their personalities as well. I almost went to walk over there when I heard my name from the only familiar voice I knew.
“Hey, Jeongyeon!” Nayeon called from across the bunk, waving me over to where her and Momo were talking. I smiled in relief, and scurried over. “Hey,” I said casually, my eyes meeting Momo’s as she leaned against a bunk bed that appeared to be hers, grinning from her previous conversation with Nayeon.
”Oh hey, Jeongyeon. Nayeon was telling me about you. I’m Hirai Momo.” The blonde introduced herself, which I had known her name anyways, but it was refreshing to meet yet another sweet girl. I had considered myself lucky, since usually a place full of a few hundred girls, was an easy spot for the not-so-kind of the gender.

“Oh hi,” I laughed, Nayeon joining in.
“I hope you don’t mind, Jeongyeon, Momo and I will be bunking, since she refuses to not be on the top, and I prefer the bottom. But I’m sure you’ll get a great bunkie.Though Mina and that new girl will probably bunk, and then there’s Jihyo, who gets the bed. So after the last three girls come, they’re going to fill in the places.”
I nodded along, somewhat saddened that Nayeon, the cute little mouse girl, would be sharing a bunk with somebody else. But she was right. So far, everyone has been really kind to me, and in general. I’m sure I’d get a sweet girl. Let’s just hope I don’t push my good luck.

”Oh, yeah, sounds cool. I don’t blame you, the bottom hurts less when you fall out of it.” I joked, causing all three of us to giggle.
“Momo fell last year!” Nayeon announced, which caused to her getting lightly elbowed by the blonde girl. “Hey! In my defense, I was practicing our dance!” Momo retorted, Nayeon rolling her eyes. “Then you deserved it, dancing on a bunk!”
I couldn’t help but chuckle through their friendly bicker, waiting for them to finish defending themselves before I asked, “Dance? You guys dance here?”
“Ooh, right! Jeong’s a newbie.” Momo giggled, gesturing for Nayeon to explain.
“Okay, so every year, Camp Once holds a talent show, where we get to preform any original performance, in hopes to win two-hundred dollars for each person in the group. It’s supposed to be used to re-enroll into the Camp, but nobody actually does that.” Nayeon broke it down, Momo nodding behind her.

“Yeah, Nayeon and I teamed up last year, but we were no chance against this girl named Tzuyu.” Momo said the girl’s name in wonder, then continuing. “She’s amazing, one of the best dancers I’ve really seen. And she’s so much younger than us, I just can’t believe it- her!” The blonde spoke as if she was in a magical trance, smiling all the way through it.
“Okay, okay, Hirai, we get it, you have a girl crush on Tzuyu.” Nayeon giggled, causing Momo to fall into a blush.

“Did someone say Tzuyu?” A new, high-pitched voice broke into the conversation behind me, startling me, causing me to jump.
Nayeon giggled before me. “Jeongyeon! Did little Mina scare you? Snap out of it, she’s the least frightening girl around here.”
I turned around slowly, a slight smile hiding my sheer embarrassment. The girl from before, with the smaller face features, was smiling. “Maybe, but don’t forget, Nayeon, it’s always the quiet ones.” She winked, laughter arising from all corners of the group.
“Oh! But how rude of me. Everyone, this is Chaeyoung. It’s her first year here too, Jeongyan.” The other girl, now joining the circle, smiled and waved, “Hi.”
“Yeon, Mina.” Momo corrected the girl to my left. “Just like little unnie here.” Momo took her arm, and pulled the mousy girl into her closely, getting a huge smile out of her.
”I’m sorry! Jeongyeon.” Mina nodded, correcting herself as well.
I shook my head, holding my hands out. “It’s okay, no worries.” I insisted, as we exchanged smiles.
“But anyways, Tzuyu is going to be in Cabin 2!” Mina exclaimed, her eyes connecting with Momo’s, who practically fainted into Nayeon’s arms.
“What?” Momo shrilled, eyes bulging, and her hands immediately going to her blonde locks, making sure her hair was ready to be seen by the dancer I knew little about.
The other girls talked quietly about it, as Mina explained that Tzuyu requested to bunk with Momo and Nayeon, since she looked up to them as performers as well.

Though just as the group all got into chatter, we heard the door whoosh open, causing the entire group to our heads towards it. A girl I recognized, Jihyo, and one I didn’t, a young girl, like us, with the brightest smile that I had seen all day. Her hair was dyed a mixture of pink and orange on the tips, and her cheeks were incredibly well-structured. She was absolutely cute, and like everyone else, seemed as kind as kind could get.
”Unnie!” The three returning camp member’s chimed, running over to Jihyo, who embraced them all in a large hug. “Hey, guys.” the redhead laughed and let them go, moving over to the only regular bed, that already had her bags and whatnot sitting on it. Jihyo sat down, and the other girl, almost forgotten, moving over to the last completely bare bunk set, and sat on the bottom bed, looking off towards a window, not sadly, just as if she was lost in the works of the nature beyond.

As Jihyo chatted with the other campers, I almost felt bad, not joining in with the girl with the high cheekbones and colorful hair. So, I did.
Slowly, as if approaching a doe, I crept over to the small girl, and leaned against the frame of the bunk-bed. “Hi,” I smiled down at her.
The adorable girl looked up at me, returning the sweet look. “Oh, hey! Sorry, I just got off a long plane ride, and I guess I’m still a little jet-lagged.” She giggled, and patted the mattress. “You can sit! I won’t bite… Well, unless you have chocolate, then I might bite a little..” As I sat down, we both held eye contact for a moment, and then burst into a small fit of humor. I looked over to the group of five to our left, who had gazed over to us, and the girl and I continued to laugh it off.
“Oh!” She gasped, and I turned my attention back to her. “My name is Dahyun!” The colorfully-dyed haired girl chimed, running a hand through those very locks that captured her personality well.
“Hi, Dahyun.” Grinning, I nodded in kindness. “I’m Jeongyeon.”
The girl, now known as Dahyun, smiled even bigger, if that was even possible, and gave me a warm look. “Thanks for coming over here, Jeongyeon. I’m a mess making the first move.” Dahyun confessed with a laugh. “It’s my first year here, I didn’t think I’d make any friends.”
“With that smile? I’m surprised I’m the only one who’s reached out.”
Dahyun blushed. She. Blushed.
“Oh, Jeongyeon, that’s.. Sweet., thank you.” She shared her grace, and I smiled in return.
“Any time.” I winked playfully, and then pulled myself up, sliding over the few feet to my own bottom bunk, and sat with my legs Indian-style.”I should probably get unpacking, or I probably never will.” Dahyun nodded. “Oh, definitely, definitely. Me too.” She smiled, and stood up, leaning down to her bag, and pulling out sheets.

Sheets. Oh sheet. Were we supposed to pack those? This is what I get for packing lighter than a homeless person. Wonderful.

I went ahead and forgot about it, something I could deal with later.
Abandoning my own plan completely, I looked over to Dahyun. “Hey, want to go get a snow-cone? I think I need food before I use all my energy on this.” I asked, only hoping I wasn’t bothering her and her unpacking. The unpacking that was my idea, after all.

Dahyun smiled, standing up from the floor, and coming over to my side of the room, nodding. “Sound’s great. As long as I’m not being productive, I’m happy as can be.”
I stood up as well, and dusted off my bright yellow shorts, and joined her side. Turning my head to the back of the cabin, I called out to the leader of our group. “Hey, Jihyo, we’ll be back in a few!”
The artificial redhead smiled, nodding. “Okay, have fun!”
With unnie’s blessing, I went first towards the door, and rested my hand on the knob, before flicking my wrist, and popping it open. Mindlessly, walking out first, only then realizing it was rude of me to not let the sweet girl with the multicolored hair go first, but I was already swinging out of the frame.

Though instead of flying into the blazing heat, ready to walk off to concession with Dahyun, my body instantly slammed into something that felt like another, sending the two of us, directly onto the wooden patio of the cabin with a rather loud thud. It was all such a blur, and to be quite honest, I didn’t exactly realize what was happening until it had already happened.
My eyes had been closed for the fall, and as they fluttered open to witness the aftermath, I came to the truth that it had been another young girl who had padded my own fall. My eyes synced up with hers instantly, the two browns reflecting off of each other, speaking for themselves, for our mouth had not rushed out any words. Instantly, I couldn’t help but take in her appearance. Even squished to the floor, oh my, she was absolutely gorgeous. The pigment to her locks was similar to the blonde of Momo’s, but slightly more golden. Her eyes, even for the hood that we all shared, were quite round, giving her a child-like appearance, but in a way, it suited her beautifully, giving her that stunning picture-perfect, natural look.

“I am so, so sorry!” My lips finally pushed out, as I pushed off from the small girl, quickly jumping onto my feet. As I reached out to collect her slender hand into my own, my senses picked up the cold dampness soaking into the cottons of my shirt, plastering onto my skin. Looking down on the gem-like girl, who was now accepting my help, getting to her feet, a crushed Styrofoam cup falling to the floor as her body rolled into a standing position. Her once completely white t-shirt, had a large red stain, slowly seeping into the area of the material, resembling my own. Something I caught a good look at, once I could take in her frame.
“No, no, it’s okay, it’s okay. This shirt was boring anyways. You’ve given it some character.” Her high voice, perfected the piece of the puzzle that was her cuteness. It all seemed to work so well on her, especially the small smile stuck on her pink lips.
”You have a name, don’t you? I’d like to thank my personal artist for the welcome-back gift.” She giggled, looking into my own face, as she collected her bags in her hands, now standing.
“Je-” I began, only to have my voice overpowered by a familiar one, Dahyun’s. I had almost forgotten about her.
“Jeongyeon!” She gasped, obviously having seen the new girl’s and I’s little date with gravity. “Oh my gosh, are you okay? That looked like it hurt.” Dahyun then came into view, on my left, as the blonde was on my right, the three of us forming a triangle of sorts. “Oh, yeah, Dahyun. I’m okay, just sticky and a little embarrassed.” I chuckled, looking from my friend, to the blonde. “But yeah, I’m Jeongyeon.”
The golden-hued haired girl smiled kindly. “Hi, Jeongyeon. My name is Sana.” She said with a small bow, and I returned the gesture. “Welcome to Cabin 2, Sana!” Dahyun greeted, a full on smile. “Why don’t we go inside, I’m practically melting out here, and you two should probably change before the bees attack.”
Sana and I exchanged silly looks, then gazed down at our shirts, agreeing.
“Rest in peace, cherry snow-cone, rest in peace.” Sana clasped her hands together, as if in prayer, a faked sad look, and bowed her head.
Dahyun and I looked at one another, and then began laughing, Sana peeking up, and joining in.
“Come on, losers, this shirt is going to stick to me permanently if I don’t change, and snow-cone is definitely not my color.” I joked, getting the same reaction from my new friends. Turning on my heel, I went ahead and took the first move to get back inside into the cabin. As my feet brought me to my bed, along with the two girls behind me, Sana closing the door, Jihyo’s voice broke through.
“Back so soon? Were the lines closed? They shouldn’t be. Want me to go down with you?”
”Oh, no it’s okay, Jihyo! Dahyun and I kind of, ran into a friend.” I explained, sitting down onto my bed, exposing Sana, who had been standing behind me.

“Sana!” Momo, who had been near her bunk, called out, a smile now on her face as she waved. Though she stayed by her bed, and Sana waved back. “Hi, Momo, Hi Nayeon, Jihyo, Mina.” She smiled, placing her bags on the floor, looking around at the faces she recognized, greeting them all sweetly.
“Oh, Jeongyeon, do you mind if I bunk with you? I like the bed, on the top, close to the window..” Sana asked with her precious voice, and that’s when I noticed Dahyun slipping away, over to her bed.
“Of course, Sana. I would love that, honestly. Keep me company.” I nodded, reaching over to my backpack, and pulling out a camouflage t-shirt, and setting it in my lap. Quickly, I peeled my stained shirt from my torso, sitting under the top bunk, the four posts keeping me hidden. I slid on my back-up shirt with ease, and crumbled the soiled shirt into my bag.

“I’m going to go ahead and make my bed, Jeongyeon. I don’t think I’ll ever get to it if I don’t do it now. We can grab that snow-cone later?” I turned my head, finding the voice of Dahyun, who was yanking a white sheet over the bare mattress.
I nodded and stood up, “Of course. I’m always up for food. Whenever your ready is great. No rush.”
‘Thanks, Jeong.” Her voice replied, and I smiled at her before turning back to face Sana, who had already changed into a Sailor Moon shirt, and I chuckled mentally to her choice of anime. Cute.

The blonde girl also had a light pink sheet in her hands, and her crinkled nose gave off the look of confusion. “I always have trouble with his part.” She admitted, as if reading my mind, then laughed. “Do you mind helping me get the bottom two corners, and I can do the top? Then I can help you with yours.”
I answered with a nod, “Of course, of course. Here, give me this side..” I said, taking some of the bunched ends of the fitted sheet into my hands, and stepping onto the edge of my bed, leaning over the wooden railing of Sana’s top bunk, and lifting the nearest bottom corner, hooking the sheet under. Then I stretched a bit farther, and repeated the process to the opposing edge of the mattress.
Hoping down to the floor, I raised my brow at Sana, who was looking down at me in amazement, her knees on top of the bed, trying to find a way to get the other two ends hooked onto the mattress. I couldn’t help but cover my mouth and giggle.
“Would you like some help, Usagi?” I pursed my lips, trying to keep my humorous laughter contained.

Sana looked down at her shirt, then back at me, blushing softly. But then, she nodded, and started scooting towards the ladder, and wormed down. As her feet hit the ground, she moved aside and left the space open for me to go ahead and climb up.
“I really appreciate this, Jeongyeon.” She spoke from the ground, causing me to shrug. “Hey, no problem. I couldn’t have you sleeping with only half of your sheet on the bed, could I?” My tone was light, as I finished off her bed, and climbed down. Landing on the wood, Sana already had her blanket in her hands. As soon as I noticed the print on it, I gave her a wide-eyed look. “Is that..” I began, “Is that a Sailor Moon blanket, Sana?”
I needed to laugh. Not to make fun of her for her interests, but because she continued to get cuter and dorkier by the minute. Sana was this endless book of hidden treasures, and each of her actions continued to delight me. She was an absolute precious gem.

“Okay, maybe. But I really like Sailor Moon! I’ve been watching it since I was a little girl. I’m close to it, mostly since anime does come from my home. Japan, I mean.” Sana explained, the soft pink blush sparkling in the apples of her cheeks, slowly taking a detour to her eyes, the brown marbles lighting up eventually as she spoke of her home, and her sentimental show.
I couldn’t help but smile at her. As Sana spoke of her loves, I couldn’t not take in that joy too.
“Japan? You’re from Japan?” I pondered out loud, my eyes never leaving hers.
“Yeah! But I come to Korea for Camp Once. I just love how nice it is here, and my parents like me reaching out to different cultures.” Sana nodded, continuing. “And the fact that I stay busy all summer. So it’s a win-win, I guess.” She smiled, moving over to the bed, and stepping up the ladder, tossing her fleece blanket of Sailor Moon and the gang on her bed, smoothing it out with her hands as she stood on the middle rung of the wooden ladder.
“Well at least you enjoy coming over here. Because it seems that this summer would’ve felt somewhat unfulfilled without crashing into a Japanese girl, ruining our shirts, and then ending up bunking with that same girl. I mean, it was practically in the brochure. Right next to archery.”
Sana chuckled, rolled her eyes playfully. “Yes, I just knew that my oppa in shinning camo would be here for my rescue.” She teased, tossing up a pillow in a plain white case, onto her bed, completing the spread. Dusting her hands off, then planting them onto her hips, and looked over to my bare mattress and gestured to it.
“This time, I can help you with your sheets. Do you want to go ahead and get them out?” Sana asked, causing me to shudder softly, and then reach my hand to the back of my neck to scratch.
“If I would’ve remembered to pack some, then yeah, that would’ve been lovely.” I chuckled nervously.
“Oh, you didn’t know to bring any?”
“Well, no. My sister told me they would have some already. I don’t know why I wouldn’t think I would need to pack my own..” I sighed and gave into my own stupidity.
“Well, you’re in luck, because my mom,” Sana began, reaching into her bag. Always packs two.” In her hand, held a perfectly-folded pastel blue fitted sheet. And instantly, I felt my heart light up.
“Oh, Sana. Thank you, thank you so much.” I gave her my gratitude, and took the sheet that she offered me, immediately shaking it out of it’s nice fold.
“No problem. As long as you can also accept my extra blanket as well.” Sana giggled, another Sailor Moon fleece in her hands, almost magically.
“Oh gee,” I breathed sweetly, already working on attaching the bottom edges of the mattress onto the blue material. “How ever could I return your kindness?” I said in a sing-song tone, watching as she tried her hardest to hook on the sheet, actually succeeding.
“How about we discuss that at the welcoming campfire. You can make me a s’more.” Sana suggested as I tossed the blanket over the bed, and placed my own pillow to the head of the mattress. Once my bed setup was complete, I stood before the blonde, and gave her a single, sharp nod.
“You have yourself a deal, Sailor Moon.” I spoke contently. “How about for now, we go get us another snow-cone. I promise I’ll try my hardest to not ruin your very special shirt.” I laughed softly, the smile glued to my lips.
Sana returned the silly noise, threading a few fingers through her golden locks. “On your lead, oppa.” She took my upper arm, and my steps brought us to the door, which I opened, exited from, and to my own luck, ran into no innocent and beautiful Japanese girls.
