The Closest I Could Get

The Closest I Could Get

"Unnie, can I come over?"

Eunjung couldn't help but feel the urgency because of the tone of Jiyeon's voice over the phone when the maknae made that call about half an hour ago. Eunjung didn't need anyone to tell her that the younger girl had been crying, and from the muffled sobs and the choking breaths, she could tell that Jiyeon had been crying for a while now, which made her want to come over instead of having it the other way around, for fear that Jiyeon might not be able to control herself while on the road. After a few minutes of insisting, Jiyeon finally agreed that Eunjung be the one to come over to her house, and now here Eunjung is, speeding through the traffic to see her.

Eunjung didn't need to knock to be let inside, as she knew the passcode of Jiyeon's door. Walking inside towards the living room of the apartment, she saw the girl she had come over for, huddled up on the floor in front of the couch, her head on her knees, bawling her eyes out. Then, as if on cue, Jiyeon looked up to Eunjung, allowing the older girl to take in her appearance, with her messy hair and bloodshot eyes and all. The maknae looked like she was about to start wasting away, and Eunjung can only guess why.

"What happened?"

Instead of giving a proper response, Jiyeon rushed over to Eunjung and hugged her, all the while bawling her eyes out again. Sighing, Eunjung returned the hug and led the two of them to the couch where they could both sit and have a talk about what happened. Once they were both seated, Eunjung once again tried to ask Jiyeon why she was crying, only to get more crying as a response. Knowing that it would take a while before Jiyeon gets enough will to talk about it, Eunjung just stayed and patted the other girl's back and let her cry, all the while whispering things that she hoped would help comfort Jiyeon.

"Gun and I, we're over," Jiyeon said amidst her tears, finally having the will to speak about what happened.

"What?" Eunjung could only say in response.

"We're over. I broke up with him a while ago," Jiyeon said once again.

"What? Why?"

And then Jiyeon recounted how her most recent argument with her long-time boyfriend Lee Dong Gun had gotten out of hand, which started with something petty and ended up with the two of them bringing up the relationship scorecard, and then resulting in their breakup.

Upon hearing the news, an unexplainable feeling settled in Eunjung. Sure, she was sad because of what happened to her closest friend, but there was still the tiniest bit of happiness upon knowing that the girl she likes is now single again, and it made her feel guilty and disgusted at herself, knowing the fact that the maknae's sorrow was the source of the undeserved happiness she was feeling (and is trying to get rid of) right now.

After a few more hours of comforting the younger girl, which included cooking up dinner for her and coaxing her to eat, Eunjung was ready to leave when Jiyeon asked her to stay the night, to which Eunjung readily agreed, for fear that if she leaves, Jiyeon might do something regrettable. And so now here they are, lying beside one another on Jiyeon's queen-sized bed, staring at the ceiling.

"She's really lucky," Jiyeon suddenly said out of the blue, looking towards Eunjung.

"Who?" Eunjung asked in response, not sure what the younger girl was getting at.

"The girl you like."

Eunjung's preference was not a secret among the members, and there was no judgment to it, to which Eunjung was extremely thankful. The last thing she would want to happen was for the members to be looking at her with disgust, and so she tried to keep her dispositions hidden until the members had a long talk with her about it, which resulted in their other members Hyomin and Qri to come out as well.

Now, if there was another secret Eunjung had kept hidden for the past seven years, it was that Eunjung had liked, no, loved, Jiyeon since before, and thinking that Jiyeon was as straight as an ironing board, which was only confirmed whenever Jiyeon talks about her random guy crushes, a friend is as close as Eunjung could get, and so earning the "best friend" title was already enough to make her feel satisfied. It was already enough for her to show Jiyeon her love through the friendly gestures, hugs and occasional kisses to the cheek and forehead. At least that's what she tells herself.

"If she only knew," Sighing at the thought, Eunjung replied to Jiyeon's previous statement.

"How confident can you get?" Mistaking the older girl's reply as one of confidence and interpreting it as something along the lines of "if only she knew how lucky she is", Jiyeon laughed slightly and gave a light punch to Eunjung's shoulder, to which Eunjung replied with her own laughter.

"What? I'm just telling the truth," Eunjung said, following through with Jiyeon's thought.

"Thank you," Jiyeon suddenly said, breaking the line of thought she started a few moments ago.

"What for?" Eunjung asked in confusion.

"For being here with me today and for comforting me. Actually, not just for today. Thank you for everything, and for all the times you were here for me."

And once again silence filled the room, with Jiyeon having said enough and with Eunjung not knowing how to respond.

"Anyway, good night unnie"

After a while, when Eunjung could hear Jiyeon's even breath as she slept, she got closer and kissed the younger girl's forehead goodnight.

"Good night Jiyeon. I love you."

A few days after, Jiyeon and Dong Gun had gotten back together. Dong Gun had wooed Jiyeon back, and after a while Jiyeon happily agreed to be Dong Gun's girlfriend again.

Watching the couple get all lovey-dovey, Eunjung couldn't help but smile despite the lingering hurt she feels.

"You should have told her when you had the chance, you know" Qri said as she stood beside Eunjung, watching the couple leave.

"And risk out friendship? No way unnie," Eunjung responded as she continued staring at the couple's retreating backs.

"You're just hurting yourself, Eunjung," Qri said as she sighed, concern (and slight irritation) for the other girl showing through her calm exterior.

"No unnie. I'm not hurting, I already accepted the fact that being her best friend is the closest I could get" Eunjung responded with a bitter smile and left, leaving Qri to ponder on her own.

A/N: Hey yo! So here I am again, back with another one-shot which came up to me last night while I was curled up in bed, thinking about my academic life. Now I'm not sure whether drinking that coffee yesterday was a good thing (because I came up with this) or a bad thing (because I'm still at a loss about my thesis). Hahahahaha

How was it? Don't forget to comment your thoughts below! :D
