First Meeting pt. 1

Between the Lines ~DISCONTINUED~

Quite frankly, being a celebrity is synonymous to having no sleep. It wasn't all glitz and glamour like what most people expect it to be but waking up looking like a tired zombie fresh out from a coma and wearing a new skin to look human. With that being said, it was an understatement how thrilled and privileged Sungjae felt to collapse on his bed, 3 hours earlier than usual, after doing what needs to be done for tomorrow's filming schedule. Sadly, he wasn't able to get the most out of it simply because his nervousness coupled with his anxiety kept him up at night, storming his thoughts with the 'what ifs' in life.
So when his hyungs streamlined inside his bedroom with screams and shouts of what he could make out to be of frustration and protest, it was understandable to see him sit up on his bed and hear him shout louder than his older members as he threw his pillow to the door.
"STOP!" He screamed.
It was almost funny how everyone froze as they stared at their maknae, who looked ready to kill just a few moments ago, revert back to his childish self and wear an innocent-looking facade. "Now," He calmly stated, glancing around with a smile (quite ironically, everyone felt a strong killing intent come out from him making them keep their mouth close as well as keep their feet glued to wherever they were standing), "What is all the fuss about?"
As if on cue, everybody (save for Hyunsik who was calmly standing by the door, silently spectating them, and for Ilhoon who pretended to act cool as he leaned on the doorframe) started speaking all at once. Changsub and Peniel were even slapping his back, while the others were basically screaming on his ears, saying "You punk!", "Curse you!" and "You lucky bastard!" in alternating frequencies.
Usually, rude was never part of his dictionary, nor does tearing through an obnoxious clump of bodies narrowing closer towards him and storming out of his room—but he did just as that, running away as the rest of BtoB (who dwindled down into a rabid mob of walking-talking annoyances) chased after him.
Heaven knows how relieved Sungjae felt when their manager barged in, clad in a sophisticated white collared shirt tucked inside a pair of loose black slacks. For a moment there, it looked like it was his manager that was going on a blind date—a sentiment in which Minhyuk shared and had no qualms in voicing out.
"Hyung," The older member piped up with a teasing grin, "you looked like you're the one who's going out on a blind date."
It caused the other members to size him up and mirror the teasing grin Minhyuk had on his face. Manager Hong looked unfazed, although the faint blush that crept up to his neck made him look a bit guilty, "Ani, it's not like that." He said, dismissing their thoughts in a short wave of the hand before facing Sungjae, "You," he pointed at him, "why aren't you dressed yet?"
Sungjae blinked in response, "Hyung, it's still early in the morning."
Their manager was about to retort when Eunkwang stepped forward, "Yah, you punk! Don't you know who your wife is? Put in more effort." Most members seemed to agree since they all gave him the face (the kind where the one being looked at starts feeling like the most unworthy scum of the earth), it really annoyed him to some degree and was about to retort (something along the lines of "She's lucky to be called my wife") but was caught short at the tiniest yet considerably the most important detail. "You know her?"
"An article just came out." It was Hyunsik who replied, walking closer to him with a handphone in hand, "And it's already mid-morning." He curtly added, wearing that playful grin distinctive only to him as he handed the maknae his phone.
When Sungjae saw the article, his face went neutral but said nothing. People who doesn't know him might write off his nonchalance as him acting cool, but for s who knew him so well knew that it was his default face whenever he was disappointed. This actually translated as a direct insult to Eunkwang, because not only did he like Red Velvet as a group, he preferred Joy's sweet, calming voice over Irene's elegant one (which Changsub obviously prefer) and Wendy's powerful style (who undoubtedly have the best vocal flexibility and prowess compared to the other members). "What's with that expression?" The leader chided.
All at once, they started complaining about why it must be Sungjae when they could've been a better partner, the loudest being Eunkwang, prompting the person receiving the offense to say, "Yah! Who are you looking down on?" Before storming off to take a bath while their manager just shook his head.
Thus, how the day started in BtoB's dorm.

Sungjae knew it was unreasonable to be that nervous when he already knew who his partner on screen would be, it even added more to the burden when he realized that even though the cameramen were following him, none of them answered any of his questions and only just smiled at him. He kept on speaking, directly talking at them, because he felt awkward and anxious at the same time, but he only ended up feeling like an idiot who was talking to nothing but air. It was actually starting to frustrate him because never had he felt so lost in filming a show. He heard rumors that WGM had no script, but a variety must at least have a guideline of what he should do or say, but here? None. He was only informed that today was going to be their first meeting and then the rest...? It was all up to them.
Acting was way more easier than this.
With that thought in mind, he sighed, "I'm really confused right now, you know?" He grunted, talking to the cameraman, "What kind of show doesn't have some sort of a guideline?" He whined comfortably, knowing that whatever he was blabbering right now was going to be edited out. He stared at them, and again, they only smiled. "Ani, I know you helped me earlier when I just came here to loosen me up, but I'm already running out of ideas on what to say. Can't you help me some more?"
He realized by then that they were only amused by him and were probably used to this kind of reaction. They had worked with hundreds of couples with different personalities and had filmed first meetings in the same quantity. In other words: they were experienced enough to not get shaken by whatever he was doing.
But he wasn't one to give up.
He stopped, and they stopped too, before he randomly bowed his head.
He knew that they were most probably confused and a small voice inside his head cackled evilly at the thought of being even. A few seconds later, he lifted his face and wore the funniest facial expression he could muster and said in a really weird voice, "Aigoo, aren't I extremely handsome?"
"Pfft!"
Sungjae dropped the funny act and pointed at the cameraman who cracked, "Hah! You laughed!" He exclaimed, looking extremely thrilled and proud of his accomplishment before his expression turned pleading, wearing the lost look that looked akin to an abandoned puppy. "You might be used to this but I'm not. You guys are not made of stone. Please help me some more."
The cameramen looked at one another before they nodded. Technically, they lost at the game Sungjae made up out of the blue, either they were pitying him or admitting defeat...or both, nonetheless, they decided to humor him, "You can practice introducing yourself." One said.
"First impressions lasts." Another one said matter-of-factly, "how you present yourself could dictate how much your partner will like you."
"Ah, you're right." He quickly agreed, faintly dreading the idea of the famous Red Velvet member hating him even though the self-assured side of him kept telling him it wasn't possible for anyone to hate him, "but how do I do that though?"
They refused to reply.
He grunted, "So your help has a time limit?" He saw them smile making him frown.
Moments later, after a dozen of unsatisfactory speeches, the phone provided by the staff suddenly vibrated, alerting him of a notification from the app. Once he read the message, he can't help but get nervous all over again, "어!" He exclaimed, raising his hand to scratch the back of his neck,  "She said she's waiting! It's here... she contacted me!"
He showed the screen to the cameraman, "What should I do?" He asked.
And again, they only smiled.
They think alike.
It was only after slightly getting over his shock did he get the chance to see her up close. He wasn't so focused on her physical appearance either, but was quite entertained with the way she kept on sitting and standing inside her box, hiding her face before peeking out again, acting equally as flustered and as unsure as him. Her cute actions seemed to knock on his heart that, despite feeling the same way as her, mustered up the courage and said a formal: "Hi."
He never intended it to happen, but his smile just grew as he watched her get inside the box again, a cute embarrassed whine coming out from her lips as she obviously fought to gather her wits and stop herself from feeling so embarrassed. It was cute, it was adorable, he just didn't know what to do anymore and just kept on watching her, even as she popped up again, "I'm the present." She straightforwardly said, eyes crinkling to form her infamous eye-smile.
And somehow, he couldn't help but feel the irony upon hearing those words. It was only yesterday when those very same words came out from his own mouth, and he... he couldn't help but laugh.
She's very playful.
A prankster. This girl is an absolute prankster.
On the first day of meeting each other, he felt like she already had him putty in her hands, having shocked him once when she immediately popped out from her box and fooling him into opening a box that contained the toy snake. It didn't necessarily annoy him, but he couldn't help but feel as though their roles were reversed. He was supposed to be the one leading her (he was the one who had more experience when it comes to filming variety shows and being a celebrity in general), but she was more collected and calm, and had him rolling into her game.
"I'm sorry that you got shocked because of him." She apologized as she brought herself closer, reaching her right hand out to caress the toy snake that he decided to place on his shoulders.
"Why?" He responded, unable to look at her because of their proximity, "It's a gift though." He added, briefly glancing at her, only to avert his eyes. For a moment there, he was tempted to stare at her lips, "I'll bring him with me."
"Please make a name for him." She suddenly requested.
"..."
"I'm just kidding. I'm kidding!"
Strangely, he was okay with it.
"Joy..." He mumbled, trying to think of a way to mix up their names, "Joy...? Yook Joy then. Yookjoy."
He didn't mind the sound of her name with his last name either.
He kind of liked it.

She's expressive

The crew never said anything, but the two of them could feel the disapprovement of their stares. It has been, what? 10 minutes...15 minutes since they lapsed into silence...? The atmosphere was severely awkward too that the two of them just kept on glancing at random places and avoiding eye contact as they walked. Sungjae was sure that he was blushing from his neck up to ears and he fought so hard to keep his smile intact. He was starting to get nervous again. He was already fidgety to begin with and added with the crew's stares, he started feeling pressured and more anxious. He wanted to break the dead air but he really didn't know what to say either (well, he wanted to say that he likes her smile, but somehow his throat seems to thicken whenever he tries to, so he doesn't). To his relief, she spoke.

"I watched your drama, but other than you, there's another [cool] guy, right?"

He didn't know know what or even how to respond, and so he snorted an embarrassed yet shy kind of laugh to hide the slight irritation that he felt inside. He really didn't want to talk about his drama, especially not if she opened this topic due to her interest for his co-actor. Even if they were only pretending, isn't it taboo to open a topic about another guy in front of your husband? "There is. There is. A lot of them. But I'm sure it's not him." If it was up to him, he'd rather they talk about their own interest so that they could get to know each other deeply.

But if that interest had something to do with his co-actor, he'd rather not.

Thinking that he misunderstood her, she pressed on, "You have a rival, right?"

"Ah," He said, eyes flitting around to divert the topic somewhere else, "Chairman Lee?"

They both laughed at his conceited sense of humor before they lapsed into silence again.

Honestly, he hoped that did the trick but he also kind of noticed how stubborn she could be plus they're starting to get awkward again so, "Yeah, Joohyuk-hyung, then what?" He relented. Staring at her made him think that she probably has her own reasons, and whether it was presumptuously to make him jealous or if she really just was interested with the other guy, he decided to just give in and do it for the sake of the show. Why should he be irritated anyway? It was ridiculous.

"Our maknae also likes that person."

Ok, that kind of did it. The word 'also' did it. Being unreasonable aside, Joohyuk already got the affection of Sohyun's character in the drama, must he get the affection of his on-screen wife too? His competitive side really couldn't stand it, "If the maknae likes him too, then do you like him too?" He said without thinking, his eyes piercing through her despite his smile.

He must admit that the way she tilted her head and furrowed her brows in confusion softened his expression. She was extremely cute and he nearly forgot his ego, but he has his own thing to settle and that took precedence (he kind of worried that she liked his co-star's character more than she did with his and that she would indirectly state her disappointment by bringing this up. Even if she did say that she liked his lips, what good does a physical attraction have compared to an emotional one? Then again, it's not like he would admit this to himself, much less, say it out loud), "The maknae likes him. Who else likes him?" He looked at her and saw her coquettish smile. It really irked him because it seemed to confirm his suspicions. "The reason why you brought him up, is it because you like him too?"

This made her stare at him and chuckle, which was kind of contagious and made him laugh along too. He knew that he sounded unreasonable, almost like a jealous and possessive boyfriend, but the entire point of the show was for the two of them to act like a couple, "No, no. It's not like that." She finally said once she realized his discomfort, "The reason why I brought this up was because I told her that the other person was cooler."

Hearing that made him happy, although it also made him shy, he was amazed at how expressive she could be that he was glad he got her as his partner. He must admit that he found it hard. He was originally going for the cool and collected demeanor Taekwang possessed in the drama and act everything out for the duration of the show (he honestly didn't think that they would last, an impression he got from earlier since she didn't fit the age range of his ideal type), but he found himself unable to slip on that persona and just went on acting like himself---the Yook Sungjae that he exclusively shows towards his mom and his older sister.

"So when I know that it's you, I really got goose bumps." She continued.

"Ah, really?" He said, bowing his head to hide his smile.

"Who knows that I'd be doing this with you?"

Without him noticing, his smile grew bigger.

"I like it. I really like it."

She flustered him so much that he couldn't help but laugh out from his shyness as he turned his head to hide his reddening face. He couldn't deny how it made him feel more esteemed and proud of himself, as well as the undeniable relief that flooded through him. Although it wasn't much of an assurance that she actually liked what he's showing now, at least it made him hope that they could film the show fluidly.

"Wah," He exclaimed as soon as he turned his head to face her again, "You suddenly threw a fastball."

He expected her to be shy, but it seemed like she's the type hide it by saying rather than expressing it by squealing to herself, "It's because I like it." She said.

And it flustered him more, "Are you really younger?"

This girl really amazed him. She was a fresh character. He wondered why he never noticed it before.

Most of all:

She's sincere

"Why did you join WGM?"

It was a sudden question and it caught him off guard. They were only laughing moments ago to some ridiculous joke about how singing was a way of life that he didn't know how to answer. Actually, he knew what to say, but saying that he joined WGM because he felt important for being specifically invited for the show sounded kind of lame. He was running low on brownie points from the moment they met and his only saving grace was the fact that she seemed fine with whatever he was showing. He didn't know what it was, pride probably, that made him want her to like him more, to impress her more.

Thankfully, she continued, oblivious to his thoughts, "Because for me, it was supposed to be Irene-unnie, but she felt awkward in joining the show." She looked fondly out the window, seemingly counting the lights inside the tunnel but her gaze was far, a sure sign of reminiscing, "Our manager then tried to persuade Seulgi-unnie and Wendy-unnie, but Seulgi-unnie was hesitant and Wendy-unnie was totally against it. Somebody was needed to join the show to promote the group." Then she looked at him and smiled, "So I volunteered. And I'm kind of glad that I did." Her gaze turned meaningful that he felt his heart skip a beat. He was blushing, he knew, he could feel his blood crowd in his cheeks. but he could care less, because she looked absolutely beautiful right then, especially with that grateful gaze and her shy yet sincere eyes. The slight blush that adorned her cheeks made her look even more adorable.

He cleared his throat to distract his thoughts, "Is that so?" Was all he could say, and he could see the light in her eyes dim. She might've been disappointed with his nonchalant response so his mind reeled to make it up, "Me too." He said, earning him a confused look, "I mean, it was my choice." He awkwardly averted his gaze, "Uhm, to join the show."

He heard her relieved sigh, attracting his attention, "I'm glad." She said, "I thought you were forced to join."

This intrigued him because she looked genuinely concerned, "And if I was?"

"Then it'd be awkward." She replied, gaze turning shy and her lips pressing down together. For a moment there, he wondered if she was doing that on purpose, if she was trying to flirt with him (he is good looking after all) or if she was just really shy. Her lips were so pink and pretty that he found himself unconsciously fixating on them. She was sly, he noted, and it was almost unfair how she had no idea that she was because when he glanced up to look at her eyes, he realized that it was just one of her nervous habits, "I volunteered because I wanted to know what it's like [to date]." She continued, then squealed, shrinking in her seat as she let out an embarrassed whine. It was so cute that even the cameraman, who was sitting on the passenger seat, and manager Hong laughed. Sungjae predicted that this scene would be an NG and would not appear on live broadcast because of that, which was slightly unfortunate. On another note, that would be a good thing since the things that she shared earlier had been intimate.

"Aish," She groaned, hiding her face behind her fists, "I'm embarrassed." Then she let out one big sigh as she gathered herself, "I'm calm now." She declared before staring pleadingly at him, "Sunbaenim~" She whined, "You should really open a new topic. Hurry!" She crossed her right arm over stomach and leaned herself towards the window, looking expectantly at him, "But I'm really glad I got paired up with you." She blurted, shocking herself before returning her expression back to normal as if nothing had happened.

It got him flustered, of course, which prompted him to snort a laugh, this girl had been throwing one fastball after the other that he barely even had the time to cool down and prepare himself for the next. But he was also glad, because he knew that she was trying hard to show and expose herself to him.

It was really pushing him to try harder.

"My members really liked Red Velvet." He suddenly shared, remembering the event that happened that morning. Honestly, he wondered if it was a bright idea to share it, so he ended up carressing Yookjoy's head to calm his nerves, "And from them, a hyung liked you specifically."

"Ah, really?"

His sight flickered towards her briefly and was glad that she seemed interested in what he had to say.

"So I said," He continued, eyes wandering around her face but not really meeting her gaze, "Who are you looking down on?" The moment those words left his lips, his embarrassment rushed at him like a huge tidal wave. She seemed to mirror his feelings because she cringed while he ended up laughing at himself to cover his emotions.

Once they quited down, he could feel her gaze on him, "I like that." She said.

And hearing her say that made him extremely proud of himself.

The staff warned them that they're supposed to wrap up in an hour's time, therefore, they must hurriedly find a good way to end their first meeting on a good note. It wasn't that hard really, since they both think alike. The two had unanimously decided to write a letter to each other using the application for them to read later, since they are still a bit awkward (though not as awkward as before) and were not yet that comfortable with each other. On another note, they both knew that as the show would progress, they could at least work better together and perhaps even become close friends.

"Ok, that's a wrap." The director said and the crew swiftly moved about to close and keep their equipments.

Sooyoung, as per her request to address her by her real name, timidly tapped his shoulder to get his attention, "Oppa," She said, peeking curtly at him.

He responded with a hum and stared at her.

"Can I call you that even when we're not filming?" She asked, which amused him, Because honestly, he thought that was a given.

"Of course. Why not?" He replied.

She sighed in relief before giving him one of her eye-smiles, the kind that makes him want to lovingly pat her head (like a pet), "Thank you. I had fun today." She said.

Which, for the nth time that day, caught him off guard. She had been sincere then but it was the softness of her tone that made him happy yet confused at the same time. She sounded so grateful when he felt like he hadn't done anything worthwhile at all. "Why? I should be the one thanking you. You did better today than I did."

She shook her head, "Ani. It's because my partner is you that I did well today. If it was somebody else...I wouldn't be this way."

"Why?" He can't help but ask.

"Just because." She replied with a curt smile.

"Ah, you're really a unique character."

"Thank you. I try my best." She declared before giggling, obviously embarrassed with what she just said and he couldn't help but smile. "But seriously, I hope next filming too. We could have fun like this. Even though we were awkward, I had fun. Thank you."

Hearing that made him feel lighthearted, filling his chest with elation and pride, that he swore to himself right then that he was going to give her that. Because he found out, he loved seeing her happy... because seeing her happy makes him happy as well.

"Of course we will." He replied simply, a smile breaking out on his face, and his tone holding a lilt of a promise. He will make sure to make her happy.

Writer's Nook:

I want to apologize to the people who thought I updated yesterday. I was supposed to save it as a draft but I was hurrying because my driving instructor had arrived and me, being the lazy procrastinating bum that I am, haven't really prepared yet. So I was rushing things and forgot to check the "hide chapter" part. I am truly sorry for that one.

Subscribe and upvote if you want to~

I am very thankful to all the people who clicked this and read the story. Thank you very much for the support. I'll do my best to update a chapter weekly, but it might differ depending on my real life sched. As you all know, real life  and I hate my chemistry laboratory professor so much because she treats everyone but herself is stupid but that's a story for another time

Also, I can't believe mable_tee subscribed! I really love her story. Especially her narration. If you haven't read it yet, check out her story guys: Cool Hot Sweet L.O.V.E.

thank you~♥

Chapter 1: I'm sorry. I'm in a really huge slump and I couldn't write when I couldn't figure out what that is. For now, This is a discontinued fiction. I know that some of you really wish this to be continued...but i cant.

I can try to write. Try to force myself to produce another chapter---but dissatisfaction would continue to buzz in the deep recesses of my mind. Waiting to be heard and deafen me with taunts.

I cant. I'm sorry.

I can try.

But I'll only hate this story and hate myself.

I'm very sorry.

But thank you for the understanding.

Chapter 2: I love this. Keep it up. For me they look like they date each other rather than did the show. I think they decided to be real couple on their third meet (maybe just to make them more comfortable with each other if they do the show if they're couple). Coz when the movie ep the feel just different. I do think they contact each other outside the show, coz the jump up of their closeness n comfortable. For me when the club ep, sungjae did kiss joy but off camera. Nooooo i don't believe they never kiss each other outside the show, just look at them, their body languange show it all. So much i want to write but i'm not good with it. I just want to say that i love this story, actually i've been waiting this kind of story, mixing between reality n fiction. Fighting.

Chapter 2: Hey.. I was reading this half way before the second chapter disappeared on me. :-P. and thanks for the shout out, I'm so grateful!! Xoxoxoxo
I love your writing style, I am all for detailed narration & description and yours is nicely done. Although you are only at chapter 2, I love it already. I read through once, I have not encountered anything that I want to point out at this point, maybe when I find anything I will comment from time to time if you don't mind.
I agree with your sentiment about Sungjae's first reaction, as Eunkwang told Joy, Sungjae was kinda disappointed when he found out that Joy was his partner. And he was portraying his cool guy image in the first episode. It was a huge contrast from his shy guy image in their next meeting. I do think it's because he didn't have any idea how she is and the only thing he knows about her was that she is one year younger, so he was able to carry out his act. But during the second meeting, now that he thinks she's like a noona and he likes it, he is nervous and doesn't know how to lead her. I also think that his attitude change from 'just go with the flow' to 'how am I going to interact?impress? (I wish) this girl'.
Ok, i'm gonna stop now before I bore you with my overzealous analysis.
Anyway, keep up the great work, I'll be waiting to read more excellent chapters from you :-)
