Someone Like Her

I am so dead! Jinyoung is mad!

Hwang Ahreum crossed the street with heavy thought and sleepy eyes. She just arrived at home from Tokyo few hours ago, but apparently she forgot to tell her boyfriend that she went to Tokyo. She didn’t even check her phone because she was having fun all day long with her friends. This case might be too light to make oh-so-good-boyfriend Park Jinyoung mad at her, but from Jinyoung’s tone when she called him this morning, he sounded really upset. And Jinyoung rarely upset at her.

Ahreum looked for a restaurant that she was supposed to meet Jinyoung. Her heart was beating so fast and she silently prayed that Jinyoung wouldn’t be that upset like she thought. Ahreum approached the certain gentleman that she had known for 3 years hesitantly. Jinyoung was already there, scanning the menu. He was clad in white t-shirt and denim jacket, looked dashing as always.

“Hi.” Ahreum took a seat in front of Jinyoung. She could only smile guiltily and waved her hand a little when Jinyoung looked at her. Those eyes were emotionless, making it even harder for Ahreum to guess what made him so upset.

“Let’s order.” Ahreum winched when she heard Jinyoung’s tone, so stern. She quickly decided her order, she was not that hungry anyway.

Waiting for food to come never felt this uncomfortable. Ahreum kept smiling awkwardly at Jinyoung who was not budging from his position. He was sitting with both hands folding in front of his chest, eyes were never leaving hers. Ahreum knew that Jinyoung was waiting for her to speak, but she didn’t know where to start.

“So….” Ahreum began to speak. “I went to Tokyo yesterday morning, and went back here last night….” Her words trailed and she fumbled her fingers. “I kind of… forgot to tell you. I booked the ticket the day before I go and you were busy with your Friday meeting.” Jinyoung face palmed, and Ahreum seriously have no idea about what she missed because Jinyoung looked so upset right now.

“Two weeks ago you went to Shanghai, last week you went to Hongkong, and yesterday you went to Tokyo.” Jinyoung said, stating the fact. “Where is the next city?” Jinyoung said sarcastically.

“My friend, Kaoru just got back from her study in London. She got me an original diecast of newest A350 Qatar Airways! I don’t want to wait to get my hand on that diecast! Besides, I never went airplane spotting at Narita before. We spent the whole day spotting at Narita… And I didn’t check my phone until this morning…. Sorry.” Ahreum smiled sheepishly. She actually got carried away a little when she told her about the diecast thing, kind of forgot that she supposed to apologize to him even she didn’t knew what was wrong with that. She often went for plane spotting, anyway and Jinyoung should know that better than anyone.

That was it. Park Jinyoung’s girlfriend was an avgeek. Ahreum loved everything about airplanes like those fangirls fancying their idol. She knew various types of airplanes, she collected diecast airplanes, she took photos of airplanes, the happiest place on earth for her wasn’t Disneyland but airport, and her definition of traveling was hopping from airport to airport. Sometimes Jinyoung got jealous of Airbus 380 because she loved it so much, but he just laughed at himself after that. So silly of him. Jinyoung knew this since the first time they met, of course. He went to the bush near the airport runway with her, carrying her tripod and large camera lenses to take photo of airplanes. He even let carry her on his neck to get better pictures of airplanes. Ahreum’s favorite photo of them was a black and white silhouette picture of them holding hands in front of airport window. His secretary had to take lots of photos before she got satisfied of the result. Oh things he did for his girlfriend…. But he didn’t mind that, it was fun.

They met through their parents, when Jinyoung’s parents were holding a party of their wedding anniversary. Apparently, Ahreum’s parents were invited and she tagged along with them. Their parents didn’t set them up, they were introduced out of formality. Apparently, Jinyoung and Ahreum were studying same major; business management although in different university. Jinyoung liked Ahreum because she was so unique and smart. Ahreum liked Jinyoung because he was so smart and witty, his knowledge seemed unlimited. Her first impression of him was he understood how airline business ran and how it worked. That was impressive and charming for Ahreum since her friends rarely talked about airplanes. But for Jinyoung, he just knew it since he supposed to be the next chairman of his father’s company. Jinyoung asked Ahreum out few months after their first meeting, and they were still dating until today. Well that was 3 years ago. Now they already graduated and Jinyoung was working for his dad, learning the company ropes.

“Actually I am not surprised about you went to another airport tours, Ahreum. But we supposed to have dinner with my family last night, and I found out that you were in Tokyo from your friend’s instagram update.”

“Isn’t the dinner tonight?” asked Ahreum. Jinyoung sighed and closed his eyes briefly.

“Last night, Ahreum.” Ahreum frowned and took her purse, looking for her phone.

“4th June, right? It’s toda… yesterday.” Ahreum went silent after she checked the date on her phone. “Oh my God!!!!!!!” Ahreum shrieked on her seat and dropped her phone on the table. She looked at Jinyoung in horror. She forgot a dinner with Jinyoung’s parents!

“Right.” Jinyoung just kept looking at Ahreum who was acting funny. She tugged her hair, then she hit her head softly on the table, and then she face palmed herself. It was funny for Jinyoung, but he was still upset. Ahreum grabbed Jinyoung’s hand that was lying on top of table.

“Oh my God!! Jinyoung-ah I am so sorry.” Ahreum shook Jinyoung’s hand with two of her hands. She bowed her head along, apologizing. Jinyoung squeezed her hand, stopping her from shaking it. “I am so sorry, Jinyoung-ah. I thought the dinner was today so I went to Tokyo only for a day.”

“This is getting out of hand, Ahreum. You actually went overseas thrice this month, just to play around in airport.”

“It’s my vacation time. You know that I just finished a big exhibition project last month.” Ahreum said back. He was kind of right, because it was her first time going overseas 3 times in a month without a plan. She went to the destination that she randomly wanted to visit. She could understand why he was kind of alarmed of her abrupt action. But she still tried to defend herself.

“And when is your next project?” Silent for a moment. Ahreum looked away, avoiding Jinyoung’s eyes. He knew really well what that meant. “You don’t have any, right?”

“I will look for it.” Ahreum sighed. She hated it when they talked about her job. Ahreum worked as freelance. She usually worked for conference or exhibition project for 3-5 months, and she would go traveling after that. It had been almost 2 years of her living like that. Although her off time would be months long also, she quite enjoyed that. Her dad didn’t like it. He said that he didn’t send her to business school to work as a mere freelance, but she ignored him. Jinyoung was supportive and understanding at first, but lately he seemed had something to talk about this matter.

“Ahreum-ah, isn’t it about time you look for permanent job?” Jinyoung asked her carefully. He knew that this topic was a bit sensitive for her. “It’s not that I am not supporting you, but with your hobby and everything, you won’t have any savings for your future.”

“I am fine with the way I life, Jinyoung,” said Ahreum, still not looking at Jinyoung.

“No, Ahreum.” Before Jinyoung could continue his words, the food was arrived. He thanked the waiter after the food was all arrived. He looked at Ahreum whom seemed so down after he brought the job topic. He felt quite guilty, but someone had to talk to her about this. If her parents couldn’t’ knock her some sense, maybe he could although that might take time. “Let’s eat. We will continue this conversation later.” Jinyoung dropped a gorgeous smile for the first time in a day.

===

Jinyoung was confused. It was him who was supposed to get upset, but why did it look like he upset her? Ahreum was silent since they ate until they got in his car. Ahreum was not a woman that talked a lot, but he knew when the silent before them was a comfortable silent or awkward kind of silent. And now was the latter. Jinyoung was driving to the highway that was not a way to her house, but she didn’t speak a word to him. Why did the situation reverse like this?

“Didn’t want to ask where we are going?” Jinyoung asked her, couldn’t bear the silence. He glanced at her for a second before he turned to focus on the road again.

“No.” Ahreum replied shortly. She didn’t pay attention to the road. She was busy with her phone since she got into the car. She was looking through her instagram home feed, replying messages. She needed to channel her foul mood somewhere for a moment, and she didn’t want to argue with Jinyoung because that was unnecessary. And because Ahreum trusted Jinyoung that much, she didn’t question him about where they were going now. Maybe a movie date, or bookstore, or shopping mall, or another usual dating places. They were just an ordinary couple beside her weird hobby. Jinyoung wasn’t addict to anything particular, after all. He just liked reading motivational books and other usual things to spend his free time.

“Okay.” Jinyoung tapped the steer wheel and increase the speed, moved to another line of highway. After an hour of driving, Jinyoung stopped on the roadside. He turned off the engine and released his seat belt. “Come on, we are here.” Ahreum looked around the area. Jinyoung parked the car in the side of the long road. She could only see sea, bushes, and trees along the way. Jinyoung got out from the car first, Ahreum followed after.

“Where are we?” Ahreum asked, looking at her surroundings. “Is it a deserted area or what?” Ahreum faced Jinyoung with her face covered by her long hair. The wind was blowing quite strong today and it made her busy tidying her hair. Jinyoung went back to his car for a moment before he approached her and gave her a hair band.

“You left it before on my dashboard.” Jinyoung smiled and tucked her hair behind her ear. Ahreum couldn’t help but smiled. How could she not love this man in front of her? After all these times, she still felt those butterflies dancing in her stomach.  Jinyoung held her shoulders and made her faced the sea after she finished tying her hair in ponytail. “Look.” Jinyoung pointed something above the sea. It was a steel bird, flying gracefully across the sky, making distance from the land.

“Airplanes!” said Ahreum happily. She turned to Jinyoung automatically with big grin plastered on her face. “Are we in Incheon?” She asked with glint on her eyes.

“Yes, although it’s quite far from the airport.” Jinyoung leaned on the roadblock, facing the excited Ahreum. “But we can see planes from here. We are in line with the runway, if we are lucky the airplane should fly above us.”

“How do you know this place? This is beautiful! It’s a shame that I didn’t bring my camera!”

“A bird whispered me this secret place,” Jinyoung said playfully that made Ahreum rolled her eyes. Jinyoung chuckled. “A friend of mine told me, I know that you will love this place.”

“Yes, I am.” Ahreum grinned happily.

“Well…. I am about to ruin your good mood again, but we really have to talk about this.” Jinyoung took Ahreum’s hand and made her sit beside him.

“Is it about the job thing again?” Ahreum asked, slightly annoyed. She knew that Jinyoung wouldn’t drop this topic. She prepared this before, but she still lost her temper.

“Please let me finish talking before you fire me back, alright?” said Jinyoung calmly. Jinyoung was the same age as Ahreum, only older by few months but he was far more mature than her. Maybe because Jinyoung was trained to be a leader. But in the other hand, Ahreum was an ordinary girl that struggled with life. She was just lucky for everything that she achieved now.

“Alright.” Ahreum nodded.

“It has been almost 2 years, Ahreum.” Jinyoung began to talk. “You have been working hard on your own. With your experiences now, you can get stable job with better condition, better work hours, and pay you fairly based on your ability. Especially with your… expensive hobby.” Jinyoung cringed whenever he thought about her hobby that cost a lot. He himself could afford that, but Ahreum would kill him if he spent money on her for plane ticket or camera lenses.

“I am still afraid of rejection. You know, going through interview sessions and ended up rejected? It’s tiring and wasting time.” Ahreum smiled bitterly, reminiscing her past times. She really hated going through interviews. That was why she decided to work as freelance with her old friend circles. She didn’t need to go through interviews because most of them already knew her performance.

“It was 2 years ago. I just don’t want you to waste your talent because of your traumatic experience. You are capable in many ways, you know that?” Jinyoung chuckled. He and Ahreum didn’t really have something in common that brought them together beside their major back in university, but he still loved her nonetheless. She was actually a hardworking, passionate, and loyal woman. Ahreum was a woman who had a lot of pride in herself. She didn’t want to get job from Jinyoung or her father. She wanted to do her things alone based on her ability, and she already proof that to Jinyoung. “You got a lot of clients for your event projects. If you are not my girlfriend, my dad would be delighted to make you my secretary.” Jinyoung amused.

“Then it’s good that I am, right? Mr. Cha is better than me in managing your tight schedule. Your amount of meetings for a week gave me headache.” Ahreum smiled at Jinyoung. He was a hardworking and dedicated man. He would be a good leader someday. “I don’t have to be your secretary to follow you flies overseas.” Ahreum grinned playfully.

Jinyoung scoffed. “You made me and Mr. Cha sat with you in economy class to Thailand when my dad could afford us to sit in first class.”

“That’s called being frugal, Mr. Park. I am a frequent flyer that should minimize her budget.” Ahreum leaned closer to Jinyoung and poked his cheek. “Beside, Asiana’s economy seat is not bad.”

“Alright, good luck in managing your budget because you always book ticket a minute after you decided where to go and that’s apparently a day before you leave.” Jinyoung pinched Ahreum cheek’s lightly.

“I have been doing that really well, Mr. Park.” They both looked like a high schooler dating through their playful gestures. Jinyoung looked at Ahreum in the eyes and cupped her face gently. Ahreum automatically held his arms.

“Ahreum, I am genuinely concern for you. Do everything you love, but don’t forget to make a name of yourself.” Jinyoung sounded so sincere. His eyes full of love. It was like honey dripping from his eyes and voice. He was so close to her, too close until she held her breath because she could feel his on her face. It had been weeks actually since they got into this kind of mood, a mood when they just wanted to kiss each other’s problem away. Jinyoung was always busy. But when Jinyoung had free time, Ahreum went somewhere over the rainbow with her camera. Obviously went photo hunting. That was why Jinyoung scheduled them a dinner with his family.

“I will think of it,” whispered Ahreum. The mood was just right, especially with a hint of airplane engines up there. It was like a scene from her favorite drama back then. They were so close. Ahreum was about to close her eyes when Jinyoung suddenly removed his hands from her face. Ahreum blushed madly, embarrassed. She was expecting a kiss! Gladly Jinyoung missed that reaction because he was busy searching something on his pocket.

“I have something for you.” Jinyoung took something from his pocket and presented it to her in his palm.

“Wow.” Ahreum picked it. It was a silver airplane necklace with her name written on the wing. “It’s beautiful.” Ahreum smiled seeing the necklace. She loved it so much. She loved him so much. What did she do in her past to deserve someone like Jinyoung?

“May I?” Jinyoung asked for the necklace, and Ahreum gave it to him. Jinyoung walked to her back and put the necklace around her neck. “Do you like it?”

“I loved it so much. Thank you, Jinyoung.”Ahreum couldn’t stop looking at the beautiful necklace, it didn’t look cheap. Well, it had her name carved. “I hope this isn’t as expensive as plane ticket.”

“I can get you a private jet if you want. I can even be your private pilot. I am a fast learner, I can get pilot lisence in a short time.”

“Jinyoung.” Ahreum frowned. She didn’t like the joke that involved him spending money, although that one was a little bit too much and unrealistic.

“Kidding. I don’t have money that much but at least I can give you something valuable.”

“But I only bought you a box of Tokyo banana.” Jinyoung laughed when he saw her expression. She was panicking again and a little bit embarrassed. Jinyoung couldn’t help but embraced her. Sometimes he wanted to squeeze her because she could be adorable. But if Jinyoung said that she was adorable, she would get mad and said that he was too cheesy.

“I love Tokyo banana,” said Jinyoung. Ahreum scoffed and walked passed him. “Hey!” Jinyoung ran to Ahreum who was busy admiring the landscape. An airplane just flew above them, going to approach. Ahreum stopped on her track to look at the airplane until it disappeared from her sight.

“When I board a plane, I always thought of the passengers’ condition. Some people can be so happy because they are going abroad for holiday, some people can be so frustrated because they are rushing for work in another city, some other can be so tired and can't wait to be at home, and some other can be so sad because they are going to visit a very sick love one.” Ahreum said, looking at the sky when other plane flew above the sea. “And I am glad that I still belong to the happy one.” She tore her gaze from the sky to Jinyoung. “I am home, Jinyoung-ah.”

This little speech of Ahreum reminded Jinyoung why he fell in love with her. She was his sweet little observant that taught him how to fight for something he loved, no matter how hard and ridiculous it was. He loved her and he planned to love her always until fate decided to bring them away. And he hoped that would be far, far away in the future because he still needed her to keep his him standing and going strong. She didn’t need to know that, she only needed to feel his action. Jinyoung opened his arms. “Welcome home, Ahreum.” With that, Ahreum confidently walked to his arms and embraced him gratefully.

“Speaking about home…” Ahreum wriggled a little to look at Jinyoung’s face. “I think I should go to your home to meet your parents.”  Jinyoung’s eyes softened when he looked at Ahreum whom was still in his arms.

“You do have a lot of things to explain to my mother…” Jinyoung said softly, leaning closer to her. “She was so worried when you didn’t come last night.” His voice was going softer to the point of whispering as the words flowed. “But we can save that for later. Gotta continue what I did because someone seemed really upset before...” Jinyoung raised his brows. Ahreum swallowed hard as Jinyoung tightened his grip around her body. His head went lower, and lower, and Ahreum closed her eyes. Finally, they shared a kiss when an airplane was flying right above them.
