“Sergeant Major Seo,” Si Jin mutters in a low voice, all the while maintaining a polite smile at the two women sitting in front of him, “Is this your idea of emergency?”

Seo Dae Young doesn’t even flinch and turns to look at his superior. He opens his mouth, about to say something, but he notices the curious gazes the two women are giving him and ends up closing his mouth.

We brought this upon ourselves. His stare seems to say to Si Jin. We went on a date with them together. Therefore we must take responsibility together. Like a man.

Translation: No way am I doing this alone.

Si Jin stretches his fake smile even wider and kicks his second-in-command under the table. “Should your girlfriend ever found out about this…outing, and blabber to my girlfriend, you do know we’re both dead meat, right?”

Dae Young almost gulps at the notion. “A soldier must know when to fight and when to surrender,” he feels a sweat rolls down his neck as he looks at his still-smiling stewardess cousin, “Right now I am choosing to fight. I shall surrender when I have to.”

“Dae Young oppa,” Shin Ji Young leans in closer and bats her eyelashes at the two soldiers, “What have you and Si Jin oppa been muttering about since a while ago?”

“Ahahaha, nothing important,” Si Jin forces out a laugh that is a tad too loud and nudges Dae Young’s elbow, “Just some…army stuff that we have to take care of urgently. Isn’t that right, Sergeant Major Seo?”

Dae Young, however, remains rooted in his seat and Si Jin almost wants to strangle his best friend when he says, “I believe the matter can be addressed accordingly… should it come to require our attention in the future.”

Translation: They are guaranteed to live as long as the news of their little escapade today don’t reach the ears of their girlfriends.

Si Jin doesn’t buy his reasoning and gives his friend another saccharine sweet smile, eyes not betraying the fear that is currently bubbling within him. We are only digging our own graves. We should retreat while we still can.

“Does that mean you have to leave soon?” Shin Ji Young’s friend, the one who is sitting in front of Dae Young and were previously taking small sips at her espresso, gives them a sad pout, “Even though Ji Young and I thought the four of us can continue where we left off last year. It was such a fun date too!”

Dae Young looks at his cousin, then to her friend, and then back to Shin Jin Young again, who is looking at the two of them expectantly. Honestly, he feels bad for what he is about to break upon the two women, especially towards his own cousin since their families had been pretty close back when they were still children. When she messaged him a few days ago, saying that she and her friend would like to meet up with him and Si Jin for a cup of coffee to catch up on the past year, he thinks they deserve to know the truth that both he and his squadron leader are no longer available on the market. So Dae Young accepts her invitation, in the hope of making this fact clear to her and straighten out any misunderstandings left between them.

Besides, it’s not like they are doing anything wrong.

There is absolutely nothing erroneous with talking to one’s previous (prospective) love interests, and to add on that, they are not there for socializing, just wrapping up some unfinished business. There is no written law out there that prevents such occurrence from happening and both Dae Young and Si Jin know they are not committing a grave sin.

But one thing that they do know is wrong, is the fact that they fail to inform their current girlfriends of their plan in partaking in said meeting.

Si Jin can just imagine Dr. Kang’s reaction when she finds out about him meeting up with Shin Ji Young-ssi and it is one that he refuses to make into a reality. Glancing at his subordinate again, he slaps him on the back a little bit too hard that Dae Young ends up inhaling the water that he is in the middle of drinking, “Sergeant Major Seo, don’t you have something to say to these two pretty ladies?”

Dae Young only gives him a blank stare. Why must I be the one start first?

Si Jin shakes his head. You’re the one who dragged me into this. Therefore you go first.

Dae Young’s brows furrow even further. Isn’t it supposed to be all about teamwork?

Si Jin refuses to meet Dae Young’s eyes. “All is fair in love and war,” he mumbles in reply, flashing a charming smile at the two flight attendants who seem to be oblivious still about the conflicts brewing within Si Jin and his second-in-command, “This involves both. Thou shalt not complain.”

Dae Young feels that rare moment of irritation towards his squadron leader (one that usually comes visit him whenever Si Jin leaves all those paperwork for him to do) and sighs internally at the timing. In the field, his friend might have been a dependable leader that will not even entertain the slightest idea of betraying his comrades, but when it comes to paperwork and Dr. Kang, Dae Young thinks his superior officer sure is not hesitant to throw him under the bus.

…Well, not that he can blame him. Dae Young knows he is exactly like Si Jin in terms of those abominable paperwork and a certain army doctor.

Mustering a stern look on his face, Dae Young turns towards the two flight attendants, clenching both his fists tightly. “Ji Young and Min Ah-ssi,” he begins slowly, eyes darting between the two women and once he is sure all their attention is on him, he decides to go for it, “I am very sorry for not informing the two of you beforehand, but both my squadron leader and I are currently in a—“

“Omo, omo, omo! What’s that?” Shin Ji Young interrupts when she sees a massive crowd starting to form outside of the café they are in. Through the transparent glass, both Si Jin and Dae Young can make out the figures of nine handsome boys, their whole appearance clearly screams ‘idols’ and to confirm their deepest fear, Shin Ji Young and her friend Min Ah suddenly stand up from their seats, squealing in excitement, “Isn’t that EXO?”

Uh-oh. Si Jin glances at his friend, who seems to share the exact same thought as him.

“Isn’t that guerrilla date? I think it is!”

“Should we go there? We might even get a chance to talk to them!”

Both girls simultaneously turn towards the frozen soldiers and shouts out in sync, “Let’s go together, oppa!”

Si Jin and Dae Young gulp.

.

.

.

Yoon Myeong Joo is having a great day.

This morning she met up with her father to talk about her previous station at Urk and the possibility of her being promoted in the near future. Her father’s proud smile has given her a boost in confidence in continuing on what she loves to do: helping other people while fighting alongside her beloved. She also manages to finish sorting out some medical equipment in the barracks, the one assignment that she has been pushing aside since a few weeks ago and admittedly, lingering uncomfortably at the back of her mind. However now that it is done and over with, Myeong Joo can focus on the date that she is going to have with Dae Young tonight.

Feeling positively giddy, she walks towards her office with a light heart while humming a sweet tune from time to time.

“Heol. Isn’t that Squadron Leader Yoo? Who is that woman beside him?”

Stop.

Myeong Joo pauses in her steps and skits closer towards the door, where she can hear the ruckus made by the soldiers inside the common’s room.

“She doesn’t look like the pretty doctor that always comes to visit him,” One soldier remarks.

Myeong Joo scoffs and shakes her head inwardly; about to continue on walking once she confirms the conversation does not require any of her attention. Though she can’t believe Si Jin sunbae has the gall to even hang out with another woman, knowing Mo Yeon sunbae’s tendency to get jealous easily. And her anger is no joke too. Well, he is digging his own grave. Besides, it is completely none of her business—

“And who is that girl clutching her arms at Sergeant Major Seo?”

Stop.

Sergeant Major Seo?

“Wah,” another soldier whistles, “She is very pretty too. Is she his girlfriend?”

“Ey, you pabo!” One soldier reprimands his fellow comrade, “Don’t you know that Sergeant Major Seo is in a relationship with Lieutenant Yoon?”

“Eh? Jinjja? Then who is this lady to Sergeant Major Seo? They are linking arms together like a pair of couple—“

Bam.

All pairs of eyes dart to the source of interruption, revealing one, fuming Yoon Myeong Joo who is currently marching with a fierce look in her eyes towards their small circle. All the soldiers swallow their nervousness and watch as Myeong Joo stops right in front of them, scowling impressively.

“What is that I hear about Sergeant Major Seo?”

The oldest in the group, as per custom in the army, shakily stands up and greets her. “Salute! Sergeant Gong Sae Il, reporting to—“

“Salute. At ease.” Myeong Joo cuts him off, eyes quickly falling to the piece of device currently in the hands of one trembling soldier, “Give me that.”

Sergeant Gong glimpses apprehensively at Myeong Joo. “Uh, with all due respect, Ma’am, I don’t think it’s a good idea—“

The lieutenant fixes him a glare and Sergeant Gong steps back in fear. “I order you as your superior officer to give it to me.”

“Y-Yes Ma’am!” Sergeant Gong Sae Il immediately scampers to take the tablet from his hoobae’s hands and timidly offers it to the seething army doctor. “Sergeant, Gong Sae Il! Here you go, Ma’am! Salute!”

Myeong Joo gives no reply in return and instead, looks down at the screen.

Entertainment Weekly.

Guerrilla date.

Frowning, Myeong Joo taps on the play button, and soon the video begins to roll.

.

“Today’s episode of Guerilla Date, EXO who has recently made a comeback decides to join us at Hongdae!” The MC, Kim Tae Jin announces merrily. “Please give them a warm round of applause!”

“We are: one! Annyeonghaseyo, EXO imnida!”

The crowd cheers boisterously at the greeting of the idol boy-group and the MC looks around the screaming fans. “Jja, for today’s episode you might get a chance to steal a hug or two from your favourite member! Isn’t that right?”

The leader, Suho, laughs and smiles towards the screaming crowd. “That’s right, it’s been a while since last we appeared in Guerrilla Date so all the members would like to take this opportunity to interact with our fans.”

“How about that pretty lady over there,” Kim Tae Jin points at a random woman from the crowd, and it turns out to be Shin Ji Young who currently has Si Jin dragged along with her, her hands circled cozily around his arm, “Ah, but your boyfriend here might not be to happy to see his beautiful girlfriend hugging some other guys, right?”

Shin Ji Young giggles bashfully and looks up at Si Jin. “Anieyo, my namchin wouldn’t mind at all, right Si Jin oppa?”

Si Jin gulps nervously and every bone in his body is screaming at him to deny their status as girlfriend-boyfriend. But his conscience as a man prevents him from doing so because it means he would have to embarrass Shin Ji Young-ssi in front of the national television. Si Jin’s parents raise him better than that so he forces a weak smile and stutters, “O-Oh.”

The MC grins and punches Si Jin in the arm. “Ey! What a sweet couple we have here!” His gaze then falls onto another couple nearby, and lo and behold, it is none other than Shin Ji Young’s friend (Min Ah) and Dae Young, who looks every bit constipated at having his face broadcasted for the whole nation to see. “Are these two your friends?”

Min Ah laughs coyly and tightens her grip on Dae Young’s arm, while said man only grunts and tries to look as stoic as possible. “That’s right, the four of us are currently on a double date, and they have been such gentlemen towards us, isn’t that right, Ji Young-ah?”

Shin Ji Young nods enthusiastically and tangles her fingers together with Si Jin’s, who looks as if his soul has left his body. “Yes, we can’t ask for more perfect boyfriends, though of course we’ve set aside a special place in our hearts for our favourite EXO members!”

All the EXO members clap loudly, and Sehun, the maknae, inserts politely. “The four of you look good together.”

Chanyeol, not wanting to lose, gives them a thumbs-up. “We pray the four of you will be together for a very long time.”

The whole crowed cheers for the two ‘couples’, and to the rest of the world, the ambience surrounding them can’t be any brighter and jollier than it already is. What they fail to notice, however, is the trail of sweat that trickles down both ‘boyfriends’ necks and their faces look as though somebody has splashed them with a white paint.

Si Jin glances at Dae Young, who purses his lips in agreement.

The two soldiers look straight ahead, both wearing a matching grim expression on their faces, as a single thought crosses their minds.

They’re so, so dead.

.

.

.

Mo Yeon is busily skimming through the reports that one of her interns has submitted to her earlier, her eyes scanning through each paragraph and her pen tapping quietly against the wooden desk. Her office is unusually silent sans the ticking of the clock plastered on the wall, and she is about to take another bite at her energy bar when someone suddenly comes knocking on her door. Before Mo Yeon can even say ‘yes’ to her guest, the door is thrown wide open and she looks up from the pile of reports to meet the steaming face of her hoobae.

“Lieutenant Yoon?” Mo Yeon frowns, dropping her pen onto the table and stands up slowly as the army doctor stomps towards her desk, “’What—“

“You will understand once you’ve seen what I just watched,” Myeong Joo grits out in annoyance, grabbing one of Mo Yeon’s hands before placing the tablet that she borrows from Sergeant Gong into her hand, “I really can’t stand the two of them.”

Mo Yeon knits her brows together. “Them? Nugu?”

“Dumb and dumber, who else?” Myeong Joo snaps.

Mo Yeon looks taken aback at Myeong Joo’s anger. “What—dumb and dumber? Sergeant Seo and Yoo Si Jin-ssi?” She squints her eyes at the screen, reading the title underneath the video and feeling even more confused. “Entertainment Weekly? I don’t watch this kind of stuff much so I don’t really understand but how does this have anything to do with the two of them?”

Myeong Joo huffs impatiently and has taken it to herself to press the play button for Mo Yeon. “Just watch, sunbae, and you will understand.”

Mo Yeon can only shrug at her hoobae’s odd behaviour and goes on to watching the video.

A minute passes.

Then another.

Then another.

And suddenly, Mo Yeon stops watching and shoves the tablet into Myeong Joo’s hands, taking off her doctor coat and stalking towards her desk with a purposeful look in her eyes. She reaches for the office phone located near her mountain of paperwork and presses the number one button, connecting her to the hospital’s administrative line.

“Kang-sunbae, what are you doing?” Myeong Joo notes how tight Mo Yeon’s grip on the phone is that her knuckles are turning white, “Are you trying to break the phone into two?”

“First Lieutenant Yoon, are you free tomorrow night?”

Myeong Joo snorts. “Why? You want to have another three days and zero nights?”

“Ani, just answer me already. This is important.” Mo Yeon barks out.

Myeong Joo blinks at her sunbae’s outburst. “No, of course, I am free for the entire day even…” She then smirks at Mo Yeon who looks as though she is already formulating a grand plan inside her head, “Are you thinking of doing a revenge, sunbae?”

Mo Yeon doesn’t even bother replying to Myeong Joo’s rhetorical question and breathes slowly when she hears the familiar ‘click’ of her call being accepted, “Hello, this is Dr. Kang Mo Yeon from the ER Department. Yes…yes, I am talking about my schedule tomorrow night for the show…ah, there will be two additional guests as well? Who?”

Mo Yeon’s expression turns into one of smug satisfaction and she gestures her fingers at Myeong Joo, asking her to come closer. “EXO? No problem. And if it’s okay, can I too bring a special guest of my own? No…she is also a surgeon, though she works for the army. Yes, yes, that will be fine. Okay, thank you so much, Secretary Lee.”

The cardiothoracic surgeon folds her hands in front of her chest, appearing devious and every bit manipulative that Myeong Joo doesn’t even want to know what kind of thoughts are running inside her mind right now. “Lieutenant Yoon, we both love EXO, yes?”

Myeong Joo frowns. “EXO? The idol-group that just appeared on that video?” She then scowls and clicks her tongue at the memory. “No, I hate them. How can they say Sergeant Seo looks good with that…that frump of a woman.”

Mo Yeon stares at Myeong Joo coldly. “Ah, this is where you are wrong. From now on, you shall love Oh Sehun, while I will love that Chanyeol-boy with all my heart.”

Myeong Joo snorts. “And why should we do that?”

Mo Yeon laughs darkly, and Myeong Joo secretly wonders if her sunbae has turned crazy from all the jealousy. “Because tomorrow, we will be telling the whole nation that we are proud, single women who are looking for boyfriend candidates.” She sends Myeong Joo a smirk. “And the host will be asking us what…or in this case, who our ideal types are. Of course, both dumb and dumber will have to be watching the show for the plan to work. I will be responsible for that. Meanwhile…”

“Meanwhile?” Myeong Joo.

“We will be killing two birds with one stone,” Mo Yeon says in a chilly voice that is sure to bring shame to even the coldest of winters in Antarctica, “Make those EXO boys pay by setting our boyfriends against them, and making said boyfriends pay for going out on a date with some other women, when they already have such beautiful girlfriends waiting for them.”

Now Myeong Joo finally understands why Kang-sunbae is the valedictorian in their level. The woman is extremely shrewd, through and through.

“Kang-sunbae,” Myeong Joo starts.

Mo Yeon turns her head and raises her brow. “Hm?”

The army doctor smiles at her. “You just earned my respect.”

.

.

.

“Since the two of you belong to a very popular idol group, it must have been inevitable to be under constant pressure and stress. Which brings us to our next point: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome,” Mo Yeon smiles brightly and turns to the audience, “With hectic schedules and irregular sleeping patterns, you are more susceptible to hormonal imbalances as well as deteriorating immune systems that could have resulted in CFS.”

“Many doctors would have given you antidepressants or sleeping pills to combat with the occasional insomnia,” Myeong Joo folds her hands and leans in closer to the mic, “However this is highly inadvisable due to risk of forming a dependence. I suggest sticking with the good, old house remedies: staying hydrated, pace yourself and keep your activity level even, as well as avoiding over-consumption of caffeine or alcohol during the day.”

The two male idols nod their heads attentively, with the taller of the two giving Mo Yeon a warm smile as he says cheekily, “Geunde, jinjja, it really warms my heart to see two beautiful doctors being concerned over our well-being. I bet all the members are fuming in jealousy right now, geurochi?” He turns towards the maknae who also smiles and glances shyly at Myeong Joo, “Soljighi, my heart fluttered just now.”

Their honest confession brings laughter to the whole studio and both Mo Yeon and Myeong Joo look at each discreetly. So far, so good.

The host, noticing the exchange of looks between the two pretty doctors, nods subtly in understanding (she too is a part of their little conspiracy, who readily agrees to Mo Yeon’s plan after listening to their story and shaking her head at their tactless boyfriends) and smiles at the camera. “De, so that is all for today’s episode of Kang Mo Yeon’s Body Check. However, before we wrap up, there has been a lot of people asking us on our channel’s website,” She grins slyly at Mo Yeon and her companion, “A few episodes ago, Dr. Kang has mentioned that she is currently single, is that right?”

Mo Yeon, who is pretending to be oblivious to the hidden meaning underneath the host’ question, replies lightly. “De, masumida. Both Myeong Joo and I are currently single. What can we say though, the two of us are very happy right now, even with no boyfriends in our lives.”

“Although from time to time, we have joked around about how nice it would be to actually have one,” Myeong Joo
