Children of the Forest

Tooth Faerie

As Yoongi flew back to the edge of the Forest of the Fae, he realized that he had not yet shrunken the human child's tooth to put into his pouch. His head was still spinning and he felt like he might throw up onto his tunic. The human boy had seen him. Yoongi had managed to fail at his job before he even had the chance to truly start it.

No.

Yoongi couldn't let this happen. This was a one time thing. If Yoongi just told his Teacher that his test went off without a hitch, then he would pass and the next time he went out on assignment, he would stop bye the child's house and cast an illusion over him so that he would believe that he hadn't actually seen Yoongi that night.

But Yoongi could not lie to his Teacher. He would lose any sort of credibility he had left. He would have failed being the god damn tooth fairy. The easiest job in all of the land of the Fae! He couldn't! He had to go back now and wipe the child's memory. He still had some time left before the sun rose. He could go back right now and return in the morning, with his Teacher being none the wiser.

Yoongi was about to turn back when he suddenly felt a weird shift in his chest. The signal that another tooth had just been lost and that Yoongi had to go pick it up.

That's strange, Yoongi thinks, usually children didn't lose teeth in the middle of the night.

Yoongi let his instincts lead him to the house and when he realized where it was taking him, he stopped with a jolt. It was the same house where the child had awoken and saw him!

Had he seriously just lost another tooth? What was this child playing at?

Yoongi took a look inside the window and realized the child was lying down on his bed with his eyes closed but he was obviously still very much awake. Yoongi could tell that there was another tooth lodged under the child's pillow but Yoongi knew that if he went inside to retrieve it, the boy would wake up and see him again.

But then again, Yoongi could try to use his little bit of magic to draw an illusion in the boy's mind. How bad would it be to let the boy see him one more time if he was going to wipe his memory right afterwards?

So Yoongi opened the window again, this time leaving it open so that if he needed an escape plan he could easily get out.

He used his magic to lift the pillow and this time when the boy woke up, Yoongi was prepared.

"You're the tooth fairy!" The boy shouted with glee as he caught sight of Yoongi once again, this time he realized the canine to the right of the boy's mouth was missing, showing one single front tooth hanging all by it's lonesome in his gums, "I knew you'd come back! I'm--"

Yoongi whirled his hand in the air sending a blast of magic straight into the boy's eyes. The faerie dust melted into the boys eyes, swaying around like a sparkling whirlpool, before the boy fell back onto his bed, completely unconcious.

"There," Yoongi says outloud, "That should do it."

Yoongi shrunk the tooth and stuck it in his pouch.

Yoongi had solved his problem. Now if his Teacher asked, he could say there was a minor slip up, but he handled it and all was fine now.

With a smug smile, Yoongi flew off into the night, closing the window behind him. Hopefully that was the last he saw of that annoying kid.

But he couldn't help but feel like we was forgetting something.

****

Yoongi had indeed succesfully passed his test. He was now allowed to go about collecting his teeth whenever duty called. He still had to take classes with the other Fae in the middle of the day until he mastered each and graduated, but at least he didn't have to report to his Teacher for lessons anymore. He was officially a working Fae, just like Jin and Namjoon worked for the Queen and Hoseok worked outside the boundaries of the Fae with the animals and Jimin the beautiful Water Spirit worked alongside the other Water Fae to make sure all the water in the land was pure and unpolluted.

Yoongi was now officially the Tooth Fairy. No--scratch that, that spelling always connected him to the human's stupid legends. Even if he couldn't shake the title, he would at least make sure the spelling was correct. He was the Tooth Faerie. There. Much better.

But that didn't mean he enjoyed the title. He still wasn't taken seriously, all because his magic wasn't nearly as powerful as the other Fae and he had yet to completely master the different elemental magic. Whatever, Yoongi didn't give a . The other Fae could all kiss his for all he cared. Yoongi just wanted to do his stupid job in peace and then when he had free time, go back to the Butterfly Falls and see if Jimin the Beautiful Water Spirit was still there. He wanted to give him a gift in return for the glass rose, but Yoongi did not know what he could give.

So instead Yoongi went about his day, waiting for night to fall once again so he could start again on his second night of collecting human teeth.

He visited eight houses that night, all of children that slept soundly without a care in the world. He had been lucky this time, none of the houses he went to had been the one of the little boy who had seen him the other night. This meant that his weak magic had worked and the little boy had forgotten all about seeing the Tooth Fairy.

Yoongi was rather content with this, so he went house to house collecting their teeth and bestowing the knowledge he recieved on the children.

You will find a toy you thought you had lost behind the couch in your living room.

Your mom will take you for ice cream tomorrow after school, but only if you're a good girl!

Avoid the playground tomorrow, or you will fall off the swings and hurt your knee.

But then Yoongi realized that he had taken not one, but two teeth from the little boy the other night and he had yet to bestow any sort of knowledge on him. As much as Yoongi wanted to say it and continue on with his job, he knew it wasn't right to take this boy's teeth and not give him any insight in return!

Alas, as he came upon the last house of the night, he realized that once again he was being brought to the house of the little boy that had seen him the other night. At least this time around Yoongi could be extra careful and take his tooth, give him some knowledge and leave without any problems.

Why was this kid constantly losing teeth? Humans didn't lose teeth this quickly, usually it took a couple of days at a time for a tooth to naturally fall out. This kid must be forcefully taking his teeth out for some reason. Yoongi shakes his head, humans.

One look inside his room proved the young boy was asleep. Thank ing goodness, Yoongi thought to himself. He did not want to have to deal with this annoying kid again.

And so he creeped into the room, fluttering his wings as silently as he could.

He took note that tonight, the little boy wasn't sleeping with his Iron Man teddy bear. Must have fallen off the bed somewhere Yoongi rationalizes.

Yoongi moves to lift the pillow up. He reaches under the pillow to magic the tooth to him, blessedly not encapsulated in a plastic baggy this time. As soon as he places the pillow down he moves to place the tooth in his pouch. Yoongi turns around to look outside of the window, the sun was going to be coming up very soon. He would need to go back home and report his collectings. The last thing he needs to do is give this child some knowledge in return for his teeth and then he could leave.

Right as he thinks this a giant glass tube crashed down around him, encompassing him from all sides. Yoongi jumps, flying around to each edge of the glass and touching it with his hands. He starts panicking as no matter which way he tried to move he ran into solid glass. Nausiating fear washes over him as Yoongi turns around and sees that the boy was squatting next to his bedside table, looking at Yoongi trapped in the glass with a large front-teeth missing smile on his face.

"You came back!" the little boy bounces up and down with a giggle, "I'm so happy you did! Maybe now my wish can come true!"

Yoongi didn't know what to do! His magic obviously hadn't worked last time and now here he was ing trapped and Yoongi was sure he was going to die. He had to get out of here or he was going to die. Or worse. Become even more of a laughing stock among the Fae than he already was! How was he going to get out of here? There was nothing he could do! He would have to reason with the human child.

"Please let me free," Yoongi says, his voice shaking but also demanding. The boy gasps and his eyes grow huge.

"You can talk!" the little boy squeals in delight, "You speak Korean?"

"I speak any and all human languages," Yoongi finds himself explaining. What the was he doing? He wasn't supposed to be here explaing his kind to a human child! He was supposed to be bargaining for his freedom.

"Please let me free," Yoongi asks again, this time with more conviction.

"But I wanted to see if you could make my wish come true," the little boys says, his voice quieting down, yet still excited, "You can do magic right?"

Yoongi was hesitant to nod his head. He could do basic magic but didn't practice nearly enough to perform any sort of miracle for this child. His magic pretty much started and ended with his tooth collecting necessities.

"Yes," Yoongi ends up saying, knowing that this wasn't going to end well. But it was the truth. The boy smiles even harder, clenching his hands into fists excitedly and wiggling from side to side with energy.

"What's your name?" the boy asks, looking at Yoongi with curiosity, "I didn't know the tooth fairy was a boy. I always thought she was a girl."

"Yeah, well I'm not," Yoongi snaps a little bit too harshly. The boy gasps and jerks back slightly, a hurt look on his face.

"Sorry," the boy mumbles as he looks down. Yoongi instantly feels bad.

"Hey, kid," Yoongi grumbles.

"It's Jungkook!" The boy interupts, excitement showing again, "but you can call me Kookie!"

"Jungkook," Yoongi ignores the request, "I'm sorry. My name is Yoongi."

"Wahhhh," the boy marvels at him, "That's a nice name! It's pretty! Like your wings!"

Yoongi tries not to get irritated at the boy--Jungkook--but it was a hard feat.

"Thank you," Yoongi mutters, trying to stifle his irriation at being called pretty.

"Can you make my wish come true?" the boy asks, all wide eyed and innoncent.

Yoongi grumbles interally, here it comes... "That depends what your wish is."

The boy's eyes suddenly sadden, his face falling as he looks down at the ground, "Can you make the kids at school like me? Nobody wants to be my friend so I was wondering if you could make them want to be my friends?"

Yoongi's heart sinks. He knows that feeling all too well. Lonliness. As much as he wanted to help this boy, Jungkook, he couldn't. He didn't have that kind of magic. And he couldn't lie to this little boy, even if he wanted to.

"I'm sorry," Yoongi says, "I wish I could help you, but I don't have that kind of magic."

"Oh." Jungkook says sadly, looking down at his feet and sitting back on his bed, folding his arms and legs up together. He looked like he was about to cry. Yoongi felt really bad now. He didn't want to make this little boy sad, but he simply just couldn't help him.

"I'm really sorry, Jungkook," Yoongi says geniunely, "But I can't help. So...if you could maybe let me free..."

Once Yoongi hears the sniffles, he knew there was no way he was going to get out of here any time soon. ! ! A crying kid! What do I do? What do I do?

"Hey, hey, kid," Yoongi called out, placing his hands on the glass of the container still holding him in, "Don't cry, come on!"

Yoongi really at comforting children. He felt so awkward and uncomfortable. He really wasn't meant to be someone who interacted with others. Yoongi was just awkward and at talking to anyone. Apparently, all he was good at was ing up his job and making children cry.

The sun started to rise from the window behind Yoongi. , I'm late.

Yoongi really needed to leave. He needed to get out right ing now.

"Hey, Jungkook," Yoongi says softly, "I really need to go now."

The little boy lifts his head as he looks at the sun rising. Yoongi sees the sunbeams bounce off the trail of tears streaming down the little boys cheeks.  Suddenly, his eyes are back on Yoongi, and Yoongi has a bad feeling about this.

"I know," Jungkook says, his face brightening with an idea "I'll take you to school with me!"

What now?

"Yeah! I'll take you to school and show some of the students and once they see that I'm friends with the Tooth Fairy, they'll have to become friends with me!" Jungkook stood up in a hurry, rushing over to his closet and putting his school clothes on.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa! Kid, you can't just take me with you to school!" Yoongi tries to reason, "I'm not some damn toy you can bring to show and tell."

Jungkook freezes, staring at Yoongi in horror.

"That's a bad word!" Jungkook shrieks, quite scandalized.

Mothering nuggets.

"Sorry! Sorry!" Yoongi cries, "But I can't go to school with you! I have to go home!"

"No!" Jungkook screams, "You said magic can't help me, so then you have to help me!"

"And why exactly should I help you?" Yoongi can't help but sass back at this damn fetus. Who did he think he was bossing around the Tooth Faerie? Not that being the Tooth Faerie was the greatest thing in the world...

"Because you took three of my teeth without paying me," Jungkook says holding up three fingers with one hand and using the other to point at his missing teeth.

Damn it all! The kid was right. When the did human children become smarter than human adults? Yoongi owed him but he had already passed the window of recieving information from his teeth. It's not like he could just leave like he wanted and forget about it. By the laws of nature, he owed this kid something. And Yoongi would have to comply.

Way to be a complete up, Yoongi. Nice going.

That was how Yoongi found himself being shoved into the boy's backpack (still trapped in that damn glass case) and being carried to the boy's school.

He had no idea how long he was trapped in the kid's backpack. He ended up just sitting there, waiting for the boy to take him out of his backpack. Based off what Yoongi could hear, the boy was in the middle of his classes. This was even worse than sitting in Yoongi's own magic classes. Humans had to learn stupid things like math. Math!

Finally after what felt like ages, Yoongi felt the backpack being picked up and carried away. Yoongi rolled his eyes. He wished he could just take a nap or something to pass the time, but he had to stay awake just in case the kid tried to do something.

"Uh...hi," Yoongi heard Jungkook's voice say catiously. Yoongi's ears perked up. Was the boy talking to him? No...he was introducing himself to some other kids.

"Hi?" another random voice said, "Who are you?"

"I'm Jungkook," the boy said. Yoongi couldn't help but notice that he didn't add the 'You can call me Kookie!' part. The boy must really be shy at school.

"Ok..." another voice said. Two of them. There were two other boys in the room where they were. Jungkook was talking to them and they seemed to not be very receptive. "What do you want?"

"U-uh, well, I..." Jungkook tries to say, "I just wanted to know if you guys wanted to see something cool!"

The boys seemed interested.

"Whatcha got?" one of the boys asks.

Yoongi feels the backpack being swung around to the front of the boy's chest. He can hear the zipper ping. . Here it comes. He was going to be exposed to the entire world.

"I caught the Tooth Fairy!" Jungkook exclaims happily, "He's so pretty and small! With green hair! Look!"

But before Jungkook could pull Yoongi's glass container out of his backpack, the two other boys had laughed out loud and gave Jungkook a condescending scoff.

"The tooth fairy isn't real," one of the boys claimed. Yoongi gasps dramatically, lifting his right hand to his chest in offense. How dare these midgit humans disgrace him like this? Not for the first time, Yoongi wished he had stronger magic so that he could light these kids pants on fire.

"Yeah," the other boy crooned, "and the Tooth Fairy is a girl. Not some pretty boy with green hair!"

"Man, let's leave," the other boy says, "we already knew this kid was weird so let's just go."

"W-wait..." Jungkook calls weakly after them. But they were gone. Yoongi feels the kid slump into his backpack, clearly upset.

Yoongi feels Jungkook pick the backpack up and walk away. Pretty soon, the backpack is being opened again and Jungkook takes Yoongi out, setting him down on top of his backpack. Yoongi looks around. They must be in the little bit of woods that was behind the children's playground. This was a safe place to be. Yoongi was appreciative to Jungkook for not exposing him in too much of a public place.

When he looks to Jungkook's face and sees the sad tears running down his face, Yoongi is filled with anger.

Man, if Yoongi were just a little bit bigger he would go after those kids and give them a piece of his mind! Jungkook didn't do anything wrong! He just wanted to show these idiots something cool but obviously they were a bunch of lame es for turning Jungkook down.

"Hey," Yoongi tries, "Don't cry okay, Kookie? Those kids are just a bunch of mean bullies who don't know what they are talking about. You are a good kid--albiet a little weird--but don't let those other kids push you around."

Jungkook stared at him with sad wide eyes. Yoongi continued to rant. He didn't know what was coming over him or why he was so protective over this child all of a sudden.

"You don't need a bunch of stupid heads like that being your friends," Yoongi says, "I'll be your friend! Granted I can't do magic and no one likes me either, but still! You don't have to settle for those morons."

Yoongi didn't know what had gotten into him. He didn't know he could get so angry over a bunch of kids being mean to Jungkook. Hell, even Yoongi was somewhat mad at Jungkook for trapping him but Yoongi was finding that that anger had dispersed once he had come to find what a good kid Jungkook was.

Yoongi was quiet for a short bit, breathing hard to calm himself down. Jungkook looked at him with surprised eyes.

"You want to be my friend?" Jungkook asks, awe and something that looked like admiration on his face. Yoongi was taken aback. Had he offered to be the kid's friend? He couldn't remember. He had started on his angry rant and just let the words fly. He supposed maybe he did offer to be the kid's friend. I mean...couldn't be the worse thing in the world, right?

"Sure," Yoongi says rubbing his hand over the back of his neck, "We can be friends."

The amount of pure joy radiating off Jungkook's face was almost as blinding as staring directly at the sun.

"The Tooth Fairy is my best friend!" Jungkook squealed, picking up the glass case Yoongi was in and hugging it to his small chest, "This is so awesome!"

Yoongi couldn't help but let out a chuckle. If he was being honest, he felt weird. This kid might actually be his first friend and it was a strange thing to think. The fact that he had a friend. It was a strange first experience for him.

Yoongi was so distracted by Jungkook and his happiness that he didn't see a new kid approaching.

"Wow!" the kid burst out looking directly at Jungkook and Yoongi, "You actually did catch the Tooth Fairy! I knew you weren't lying to those other boys!"

Yoongi turned around to see this new kid. Small, like Jungkook, with a bright square smile and a missing tooth of his own.

"Hello, Tooth Fairy!" the boy exclaimed excitedly waving his hands at both Jungkook and Yoongi, "I'm Taehyung! But you can call me TaeTae!"
