Let's Not Fall In Love

Description

Literature graduate Choi Miran can't get a job at any publishing company even two years after she graduated university.

In the end, she snatches a post at a smaller publishing company called Kim&Kim Publishing. Miran has no experience in love or anything related to it but she gets assigned to the romance section of the Editing Department.

Except that, Miran's boss is a ball of energy that devotes himself to teaching Miran what love is actually about.

Foreword

"Miss Choi Miran, please enter," The assistant director announced after she opened the door to the CEO's office.

It was the third time doing this; the third time trying to find a job in the publishing industry after graduating one of the top three universities in South Korea, Yonsei University. She tried doing an internship in one of her favorite companies but they neglected her CV altogether without giving an explanation.

Kim&Kim Publishing was definitely not one of the best but it was doing well. They were famous for their loveable staff and young CEO who inherited his position before he reached 30 years old, something that seemed atrocious for Miran's father who was, as well, the CEO of a publishing/advertising company. Unfortunately, with a family of editors and writers, Miran couldn't fall behind and had to go independent and show her father what she was made of.

With a shaky breath, the brunette with cat-like eyes walked past the assistant into the room, sitting at the round table. In front of her was the CEO, a guy whose wide smile was encouraging and making her feel comfortable. On his right was a woman whose perfume Miran could smell from distance and on his left was another man, one who seemed like he wanted to be anywhere but there. She read their name tags in her mind and swallowed nervously when they concentrated strictly on her.

"Why do you want to work in our company, Miss Choi?" The CEO began with a wide smile cracked a bit on the edges.

Because no one else wants me, she wanted to respond bluntly but she couldn't. Instead, she wiped her sweaty hands on her pants and gave a different answer.

"I find your company endearing. You, Mr. Kim, as young as you are, have been keeping this company afloat during the crisis and you are in charge of great names in literature." Her response was learned specially for that interview, or any interview for that matter.

"Such as?" The woman asked, Miran's eyes widening at the question.

She seriously had no idea who worked at that company because she couldn't ask her cousin for information.

"Choi Jinhyuk," She wasn't sure she did well by naming him after their reactions.

The CEO took a file off his desk and browsed through the pages of what was probably her CV.

"Novelist Choi  Jinhyuk is your cousin, webtoon artist Choi Minhwan is your younger brother and Choi Kinam, the CEO of Dokrib Advertisement is your father. With such a family, I wonder why you came to us."

She her lips and took a deep breath before responding, "My family's reputation doesn't define me; I do. I want to show my abilities as an editor and publisher through my own hard work and perseverance."

The three judges glanced at each other before the man from the left, whose name was Choi Jungseok, turned to her with his wide eyes. They were probably the same age but Miran was feeling really small compared to him -which was quite an irony because she was taller than him even without heels.

"You have no working experience except a few internships that you never completely finished. Why is that?" The judge asked coldly.

"I-" Now that was an issue she wanted to avoid talking about but with how interested the CEO looked, she had to give an answer even if it was a lie, "I have a problem that I cannot share. I can only say it wasn't entirely because of me."

"From what you told us, Miss Choi, it looks like you haven't really thought about this interview as a serious matter in your life," The woman started, Miran's worry already growing into panic, "If that's all then-"

"No, wait! I do take this interview seriously and you have no idea how much I want to work in the publishing world!" She interrupted, jumping on her feet and leaning over the table, "The reason is petty and doesn't define my abilities as an editor," She continued in a calmer manner than before.

"And what is this petty reason?" The CEO asked curiously.

Miran sighed heavily and sat back on her chair, already feeling like she blew the chance.

"I'm really bad with romance," She admitted, "I can't work with authors who write romance because I can never sympathies with them or their characters. I got into fights with authors because of that and it has been really hard getting a job afterwards."

"Who did you fight with?" The woman urged her to respond quickly.

Miran looked down at her hands and bit her lip before she gave them the information they probably knew already since it was a big deal.

"Tiffany Hwang,"

The three judges stared at her before the CEO started to laugh loudly, even slapping his leg from such an amusing answer. Miran sighed and prepared herself for the negative answer. Instead, the CEO got up and walked around the table, towards her.

"You got it," He stated with a professional expression on his face yet his eyes were still teary from when he laughed like a psychopath; of course she wasn't going to voice out her impressions, "Congratulations, Choi Miran. You just got yourself a job. Welcome to the team!"

For some reason, when she shook his hand and bowed, she felt like she just entered the world she has been running from.

This story is very much inspired by Sekaiichi Hatsukoi, Junjou Romantica and Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun. The plot differs but some stuff may be alike in some ways.

This story was originally created for ROYAL SPARK WRITING CONTEST

The story will be centered around these prompts:

  1. "Love isn't something you find. Love is something that finds you."
  2. "Falling in love and having a relationship are two different things."
  3. "Jealousy is the grave of affection."

Besides, EXO's Unfair, Ailee's Mind Your Own Business and TTS's Baby Steps are prompts and OST for some of the chapters. There will also be more added to the OST and every chapter will have its own song.

Hope you will enjoy it! ^^ Let's hope something good will come out of this.
