Chapter 2
Of Books and Reputations"You okay?" Jackie ruffles her younger sister's hair as she puts down her mug on the kitchen counter
"Yeah. Of course." The younger doesn't look up as she was busy scribbling notes on her notebook
"Song Qian called and told me you're having boy problems" she sits beside Amber and props her chin on her hand
"WHAT? Oh sh-- Whatever my friends tell you about me, never believe them. Ugh. I swear to-- No. I am not." She breathes, not stopping from writing.
"Well, if ever you are having boy issues you can always tell me and ask me about tha--"
"You don't even have a boyfriend" Her younger sister deadpans, still scribbling.
"Why you--"
"HEY! KEEP DOWN THE RUCKUS! IT'S 9 IN THE EVENING!" Just when Jackie was ready to strangle the life out her sister their dad called from the other room.
"You're lucky I love you." Jackie begrudgingly says before she exits the kitchen.
"Yeah love you, too."
---
"Hey. I'm not having boy problems okay?"
Amber says to Song Qian as she slams her locker door.
"Isn't hating on someone who did nothing to you a problem? Plus he's a boy. Pretty much a boy problem." The elder reasons
"Whatever" she rolls her eyes "he's pretty much catching up on me in academics."
"Haterrrrr" Song Qian coos
"Call me a hater but hey, I have my academic priorities" and with that they go on separate hallways as the bell rang.
---
Ahh the sun was shining bright and warm in the school's yard. Students were roaming freely enjoying chats with each other on their free time. And there on one table somewhere in the yard a young girl with short hair was alone with her books, staring at the smiling people walking pass her
"I hate the world."
Isn't she the cutest "bully" you've ever seen?
And over there yonder, just in front of her was the student council's office. And through the door came out a tall, handsome, charming, dreamy student council president, Henry Lau. Everyone loves the guy.
"I hate you Henry Lau."
Maybe except for the same short haired girl who was alone with her books and whose knuckles were turning white at the tight grip she had on her pen.
He looks around and when his eyes chanced on Amber's figure, the least she expected to happen was
Oh don't look here, don't look here...
Don't come near me you little-- pretend you're busy pretend you're busy
She looks down and starts scribbling nonsense on a blank sheet of paper
The certain Henry Lau was making his way towards the short haired girl who was alone with her books and whose knuckles were turning-- you know what let's just call her Amber.
Okay, Henry made his way towards Amber's table.
"Hi!" He casually smiles, settling down for a seat beside her.
She stiffens at the sudden event and she swiftly crumples the paper with nothing but senseless doodles in it
What does this punk want
"Sup." She nods
"We didn't get to have a proper talk yesterday"
"Oh... yeah a call came up." She just shrugs
"Oh yeah? Well no one makes me approach then leaves me hanging--"
"Except me. Apologies" Amber was struggling to keep a straight face while maintaining the attitude in her voice as she flips through her book's pages, not looking at him
"Yeah you better apologize. No one does that to Henry Lau."
"Yeah? Well what was it that you wanted to talk about?" She slams her book shut as she finally faces him eye to eye and holy cucumbers-that-Soojung-hates, was he breathtaking.
Keep it together, he's the enemy
"I just wanted to tell you that you don't need to work hard with these anymore" he grabs the book under Amber's hand and slides it to the farther part of the table
"Hey! I was reading that."
"Relax. Because you see this?" Henry shows her a piece of paper with the list of the top students. The first thing that Amber notices was her name still on the top spot
"Your point being?" She smiles arching a brow
"This is still a temporary list. And you see that 1 point difference between us? You can rest easy in second place from now on." He smiles, folding the paper
"Not gonna let that happen" she stands up and reaches for her book and tucks it in her backpack "now if you'll excuse me I shall be leaving"
"As if the faculty is gonna allow someone like you to graduate as valedictorian."
That made her stop and look over her shoulder
"Oh they will."
Game on.
