“Miss Bae, the cardiologist is ready to see you. Please proceed to room CRD4” the secretary called, not bothering to look up from the monitor

 

 

 

“Thanks….” she mumbled, trying to take a deep breath. She began to walk along the halls, trying to find the specific room

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

“cd1……cd3…..aha!” she exclaimed as she saw the room signage which was lit up, indicating that the doctor is in

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

As soon as she opened the door, neat white walls welcomed her sight. It doesn’t look like a normal doctor’s office. The desk had a pikachu pencil holder with an orange mug beside it. A pokemon themed calendar can also be seen at another side of the wall. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

“I think I went to the pediatrician instead” irene thought as she scratched her head

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

“No, we can’t have chicken. Tell Joy to stop eating junk foods. Else she’ll face me later” a voice echoed throughout the room, Irene noticed that someone (probably the doctor) was sitting on the office chair, nonchalantly swinging it side to side

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

“Uhhm excuse me?” irene tapped the shoulder which was peeking out of the chair. The person turned her head and widened her eyes in shock

 

 

 

 

 

“I gotta go wan. Take care of the kids” she talked furiously then hung up the phone

 

 

 

 

 

 

“I’m so sorry I didn’t hear you come in I was just talking to someone on the phone”  the physician rubbed her temples with her right hand and sat properly on the chair, also indicating Joohyun to sit on the chair in front of her

 

 

 

 

 

 

“For a moment, I thought I went to the wrong room” Irene giggled

 

 

 

 

 

“Why?” the doctor tilted her head quite cutely, if Irene must say

 

 

 

 

 

 

“You have a pikachu pencil holder, you drink in an orange mug? Not to mention the pokemon calendar on your wall. I like jigglypuff by the way” joohyun giggled at the sight of the embarrassed latter

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

“Hey! It’s not my fault it’s in there, the kids like to see it when they come here. Someone told me i resemble pikachu so they gave me this. And hey, specialists said that hot chocolate is best drank in an orange mug” she said while taking a sip from the certain mug

 

 

 

 

 

 

“I haven’t introduced myself by the way, I’m Doctor Kang. But it sounds so wrong so just call me Seulgi” she said as she offered her hand 

 

 

 

 

 

“I’m Bae Joohyun, but my friends like to call me Irene” Joohyun took her hand and shook it. Somehow her heart beat a little faster than normal.

 

 

 

 

“So why are you summoned to my office” she jokingly said while joohyun just giggled at the doctor’s antics

 

 

 

 

“I have this weird feeling. In my heart.” Joohyun said

 

 

 

 

“I think you’re in love” she laughed

 

 

 

 

 

“What are you feeling?” seulgi continued

 

 

 

 

 

“My heart tends to beat irregularly. My dad said I should visit a cardio as soon as possible” irene stated

 

 

 

 

 

“What irregular thing are we talking about here?” seulgi asked while taking some notes

 

 

 

 

“It kind of beats faster than my normal heartbeat” seulgi sat up straight as she figured the girl’s condition

 

 

 

 

“I think you’re suffering from Tachycardia” Seulgi said as she bites her lips

 

 

 

 

“Tachy what?” irene repeated

 

 

 

 

“Tachycardia. It’s faster than normal heart rate at rest. It means the heart rate in your heart’s upper or lower chambers increased” she explained while pointing out the heart figure seated on her desk

 

 

 

 

 

“How does this happen?” Joohyun asks?

 

 

 

 

 

“It’s mostly caused by high blood pressure or hypertension. Sometimes emotional stress also becomes a factor of it. Even drinking alcohol or caffeinated drinks” she states

 

 

 

 

 

 

“I don’t really drink alcohol but I do like coffee a little too much” joohyun confessed

 

 

 

 

 

 

“Ahhh, I see, wait here for a second” she said as she stands up and gets something from the drawers

 

 

 

 

 

 

She comes back holding a stethoscope in one hand and a bar of twix in another

 

 

 

 

 

 

“You have a sweet spot for chocolate.” irene pointed out

 

 

 

 

 

 

“I do. My friends start to think i’m having an addiction” she chuckled and went closer to Irene

 

 

 

 

 

“Try to relax and take a deep breath. The exhale slowly” seulgi said with her soothing voice and plugged the stethoscope in her ears, gently placing the chest piece on joohyun’s  upper chest

 

 

 

 

 

 

“Inhale slowly….then Exhale ” she said as she held joohyun’s shoulder

 

 

 

 

 

Joohyun slowly took a sharp breath and tried to intake as much air as possible. She glanced at the latter who was focused on listening to her heartbeat

 

 

 

 

Joohyun suddenly felt her heart beat irregularly again, but this time, she thinks its not her disease……

 

 

 

 

 

“Damn, you sound like you ran a mile” seulgi said as she fixed herself and went back to her seat while irene frowned at the sudden loss of warmth

 

 

 

 

 

 

“How often do you experience these” seulgi asked her

 

 

 

 

 

“Probably more than thrice a day. It doesn’t have a pattern though. It just comes whenever it feels like it” Irene shrugged

 

 

 

 

 

“I see. Does it come to the point that you couldn’t breathe anymore?” seulgi asked

 

 

 

 

 

“No, not really. It just beats really fast.” Irene answered

 

 

 

 

 

“Okay. Good news is, it’s not that severe. It just attacks you sometimes. Bad news is, this could lead to diseases like heart disease. It could cause a sudden cardiac arrest or worse, even death.” Irene gulped at seulgi’s last words

 

 

 

 

 

 

“We can’t totally stop this from happening, but the treatments can help control the rapid heartbeat or manage diseases that it could cause.” seulgi continued while looking intently at the latter’s eyes

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

“What treatments am I going to-“ Irene got cut off by the loud ringing of the doctor’s phone

 

 

 

 

“I’m sorry, i have to take this” seulgi smiled apologetically and answered the phone

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

“What now Yerim!” she loudly whispered, earning a slight giggle from Irene

 

 

 

 

“I think Sooyoung unnie almost set the kitchen on fire” The girl on the speaker said

 

 

 

 

“Again! I thought I told you, sooyoung is off limits in the kitchen!” Seulgi exclaimed

 

 

 

 

 

“ Is my oven still working?” seulgi continued

 

 

 

 

“Yes unnie, I managed to take out the cake before it was gonna explode. Phew” the girl said while seulgi facepalmed herself for leaving the kids in her house

 

 

 

 

 

“Where is wendy anyways?” seulgi asked

 

 

 

 

 

 

“She’s asleep. She forgot that she left a cake to bake only for about a couple hours, she fell asleep for 5 hours! Good thing sooyoung unnie sniffs like a dog…” seulgi just chuckled at the girl’s description of her unnie

 

 

 

 

 

“So why are you blaming sooyoung for almost burning my wonderful kitchen?”

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

“Well you see, after sooyoung unnie smelled a burnt thing, she tried to turn off the oven, but accidentally, she turned it at a higher temperature…” yeri said slowly

 

 

 

 

“Sigh, whatever yerim.” seulgi just sighed at the situation. She’s pretty much used to these

 

 

 

 

 

 

“Will you be home already unnie?” the girl asked

 

 

 

 

 

 

“Yes, i’ll be home soon” she answered

 

 

 

 

 

 

“Okay unnie, come home soon. Bring lots of chicken, we’re starving!” yeri exclaimed over the phone

 

 

 

 

 

 

“Okay kiddo, i gotta go. Bye. Keep an eye on my kitchen” she said sternly

 

 

 

 

“You got it boss!” she chuckled then hung up the phone

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

“Kids” she chuckled

 

 

 

 

 

 

“Got one already?” Irene asked

 

 

 

 

 

 

“What? No! That’s absurd! That was just my annoying dongsaeng yerim” seulgi chuckled

 

 

 

 

 

“For a moment there I thought you were married” Irene jokingly said

 

 

 

 

 

“Please, with the toxic schedule I have, I don’t think I even have the time for lovelife” the two laughed at seulgi’s statement

 

 

 

 

“Anyways, i have to go, we could continue this some other time, if you’re available” seulgi said while fixed her things

 

 

 

 

 

“Sure, I think I’m free this saturday” irene said

 

 

 

 

 

“Great! Maybe we can talk about this over coffee?”

 

 

 

 

 

 

“Didn’t you just tell me earlier that I can’t drink coffee?” Irene suppressed a giggle

 

 

 

 

“Right, I forgot about that heh” seulgi scratched her nape, embarrassed at the situation

 

 

 

 

 

“Maybe we could grab lunch instead. Here’s my number, in case you need it” Seulgi gave her a calling card with a bear logo at the upper right. How cute. And childish

 

 

 

 

 

 

“Sure, I gotta go. Thanks, and, bye doc” irene chirped rather cheerfully

 

 

 

 

“I thought we already agreed on calling me Seulgi?”

 

 

 

 

 

“Right, thanks doctor seulgi!” irene joked as she left the room

 

 

 

 

 

 

“Why does it feel like I’m the one having this disease” seulgi mumbled while trying to control her heartbeat

 

 

 

 

 

She’s just a patient. But a pretty one though. Tons of patients come here everyday, how did she caught my attention so much?
