By Jin’s 3rd cup of coffee, Seulgi slammed her palm on the counter in front of him.
“Stop!” She snapped. Jin was not used to the late hours yet, having to resolve to this very unhealthy method.

“What? I need it!” Jin whined, “Also, shouldn’t you be tending to your patient?”

Seulgi pursed her lips. “He’s asleep.”

Jin eyed her, but his eyelids were quivering due to his excessive caffeine intake, causing Seulgi to laugh.

Just like that, the bright Seulgi was back. “Better toughen up, buddy,” she said with a thumb up before making her way up to the third floor.

Peeking through the small window on the door, Seulgi saw that her patient was still asleep. She glanced at the blue and white Casio strapped on her wrist. It was already 15 minutes past midnight. Technically she’s already doing an overtime. She pushed the door open, letting herself into the very bare VIP room. Besides a bed, a machine to keep track of heart beat, and a visitor’s couch, the room was a monochrome white.

Without waking the patient, Seulgi checked his vital signs: blood pressure, breathing rate, pulse, and temperature. She had read that waking patients at night to check vitals could do more harm than good. She decided to let him rest.

Finishing up, Seulgi stood back, doing a once-over of the sleeping man. He didn’t look sick at all; if it weren’t for Seulgi’s access to his hospital files as his caregiver, she would have thought that he made up an excuse to be admitted.

So, he’s blind. What a waste, she thought. His features were stellar, even as he lay soundlessly. He looked at peace with his chest moving with each breath. Seulgi picked up his file to review it once more, because she was too annoyed by the unprecedented role shift this morning to properly read his diagnosis.

Age: 21

“Hold on, is he the son of Mr. and Mrs. Oh, the owners of this hospital?” Seulgi thought aloud, not expecting an answer.

“And who are you?”

The voice nearly knocked the file out of Seulgi’s hands. Sehun was awake!

Mustering her most professional tone, she replied, “Seulgi. Kang Seulgi, your assigned caregiver.”

“I’m at a hospital?” He sounded hostile.

“Yes, you were brought here last night-”

“Leave.”

“What?” Seulgi did not expect this attitude.

“You have ears,” he replied, curt.

Finding the situation ludicrous to deal with at a time outside her work hours, Seulgi excused herself and left the room.

In her haste, she failed to notice her patient’s bandaged arm – the one she didn’t check – which was wrapped thickly to cover the slits that ran vertically down his arm. She failed to read the bottom of the page which stated his real problem, the reason he was admitted: he had tried to kill himself.
