What Apologies Are Supposed to Mean

Fragments of a Broken Reality

          She looked at him with his broken smile and wondered what went wrong. She looked at him with his hands in his pockets, hair drenched from the rain, and wondered when everything began to fall apart. 

          It was her fault.

          She hadn’t paid attention. She’d ignored his feelings, saw his grins and assumed his tired eyes meant nothing. She’d shut him out, shouted at him, and denied him love.

          Two years it had been, and even the most resilient things in the world had its limit. She’d broken him—Hoseok—the man she loved most in the world.

          “I’m sorry,” she said. She said sorry a lot, and Hoseok knew, that deep deep down, she was sorry, but apologies were supposed to mean she would stop.

          She didn’t.
