I Only Need You

I Only Need You

Anger was fuming out of their eyes as they glared at each other. Jaebum punched the wall he had her pinned against and took in a deep breath.

“How do you expect me to get out of debt if I don’t do something like this?! How do you expect us to live in peace?!” he yelled at her.

Jaebum hadn’t started his life off aspiring to be an assassin. He was excellent with weapons, yes; he had almost perfect aim, yes; but he never intended to be an assassin. He fell into a wrong lifestyle and soon found himself being hired to do someone’s dirty work. He didn’t mind doing it back then, before her; he had nothing to live for. He needed the money and being an assassin paid him well enough to do it without regret.

“Maybe if you hadn’t borrowed money from a damn con artist like the moron you are, none of this would have happened?! I asked you to stop this months ago. I told you!” Jiyoon shouted back, pushing him back away from her.

Their arguments were rare, but when they did happened, they turned ugly. Harsh words were thrown at each other with no remorse. Jiyoon looked into his eyes, seeing the second of hurt in them pained her, but she had to tell him what she thought. That was the one thing about their relationship that would never change, they would always, no matter what, speak the truth to one another. They would always tell each other what was on their heart. And now, both filled with rage, voices raised, it was all coming out harsher than it normally would.

“You think I didn’t have a reason to borrow the money? You think I did it just for the hell of it?!” Jaebum threw his hands up before glaring at her again, “I did it so we could live a comfortable life, Jiyoon!”

“Don’t you dare make me and our relationship the reason for your bad decisions. How dare you?” she argued back, “I don’t need stacks of money to live comfortably. I have a job, Jaebum, in case you forgot about that. All I need to be comfortable is a place to sleep and you, why can’t you understand that?!”

Jaebum knew he shouldn’t be shocked to hear her say that, but he couldn’t help it. He didn’t expect her to say anything like that in an argument. His anger rose again, but this time, not against her, but himself. He knew he had a problem. He only wanted to get her the best of the best things and shower her with everything. He knew she didn’t care about any of it, but he wanted to do it all for her. In the end, this was the result: him in debt with his life possibly on the line and her in distress because of him.

“Damnit, I didn’t mean for any of this to happen,” he ran his hand through his hair, “I was supposed to stop. I told them I would stop. This is the last job, Jiyoon, I swear, this is the last job I’ll do. I’ll pay off the debt and we’ll be done. I promise,” he held her hand but she pulled it back and crossed her arms across her chest, moving to lean her back against the wall.

“I’ll believe that when I see it,” her tone sounded spiteful but she was mad. It took everything in her to not say anything else. She looked away from him, to the ground.

“Babe..” he started softly but she shook her head at him, holding up her hand to make him stop talking.

“I’m really mad at you right now, please don’t make me say things I might regret,” Jiyoon almost pleaded. She needed time away from him, from the whole situation.

Jaebum sighed and walked to the couch, falling onto it in defeat. He didn’t know how he was going to end everything smoothly. There was never a clean ending for assassins, even a child would know that. There was too much at risk for the ones who hired him to just let him go as a free man. He could go to the police and tell them everything. He had evidence in the palm of his hand. He sighed as his mind began to race. Jiyoon. They would hurt Jiyoon too.

“I think we should break up…” he said it so quietly he almost didn’t hear himself.

“What?” Jiyoon’s voice broke. He knew she heard him. He couldn’t take it back now. He had to protect her in the best way that he could. He would stop seeing her and make sure she was safe.

“I said we should --”

“No,” she was walking towards him now. What could possess him to even think about that?

“Jiyoon,” his voice was stern.

“I said, no. We’re not breaking up. Why would we break up? There’s no problem between us. We fight once in awhile, but what couple doesn’t? Don’t be stupid,” Jiyoon was standing in front of him now, a mixture of anger and worry on her face.

“I just can’t keep disappointing you, I don’t think you deserve that,” he sat up, resting his elbows on his knees.

“Then what do you think I deserve?” she asked him, hands on her hips now. Her voice was softer now, less angry.

“Happiness and a good life.”

“And you think I don’t think I have those now?”

“I don’t know anymore,” Jaebum sighed, looking down. He didn’t know if she was happy. They seemed like they were the happiest couple most of the time, but then days like these would happen and he would wonder if they really were.

“Jae,” Jiyoon sat next to him and he looked at her, “I am happy with you. You’re stubborn and overprotective and you drive me crazy sometimes, but I’m happy. I don’t want to break up. I just want you to live an honest life. I know it’s going to be hard and scary, but we can move away if you want. We can leave and never come back here. I’m happy with you and you alone. Where we are doesn’t matter,” she knew that leaving his job meant living in hiding, but she didn’t mind. She saw the heaviness of his heart every time he would go. She knew how drained he was to be doing this and she couldn't handle seeing him like that anymore.

Jaebum pulled her into a hug, burying his face in the nape of her neck; she held him close. He was having an internal battle and she wanted him to know that she would always be with him. That she would never leave him in his times of need.

“Thank you,” he murmured, moving back to look her in the eyes. Their once furious eyes were now filled with serenity. Jaebum laughed at the dramatic change of attitude from just moments ago.

“What’s so funny?” Jiyoon smiled seeing him laugh.

“Nothing,” he shook his head, a smile plastered on his lips. He held her face between his palms and place a kiss on her lips.

“And what was that for?” she raised an eyebrow, not that she was complaining.

“For being you,” he was still holding her face.

“Excuse you, but I am worth way more than a kiss,” she faked a cocky expression, but then pouted, adding, “I’m sorry I called you names earlier…”

“You know I couldn’t get mad at you for that,” he laughed, letting her face go and sitting back. She leaned onto his chest, looking up at him.

“You’re still stupid though,” she said, smiling when he looked down at her with feigned shock, “thinking you could break up with me that easily,” she scoffed at him, now resting her head on his shoulder.

Jaebum smiled and wrapped his arms around her, giving her a small squeeze.

“I love you, Jiyoonie,” he rested his head on her’s. How could he even think about leaving her? Or even living without her?

“Damn straight you do,” she responded, receiving a laugh from him, “I love you, too.”

“Someone’s being a bit feisty today, huh?” Jaebum joked and felt her shrug in his arms.

“So when this job is done and you’ve paid everything, where do you wanna go?” she asked. She didn’t mind changing her life around for him. Not for Jaebum.

“What country have you always wanted to visit?”

“Hmm, how about Ireland? I’ve heard it’s a very laidback place.”

“Then Ireland it is; good thing you studied English in school. You’ll be my translator,” he joked and they both laughed.

They went to bed early that night, planning their new future. As scary as it was going to be, they were determined to make it work. Maybe one day they would finally live a normal and quiet life; that’s all they could hope and wish for.
