Chapter 1

Bruised

I slowly stepped out of my cabin and went towards the horse stables without my maids following me.      I loved to go on horse riding but my mother court lady Jung never lets me ride on horses, she says it’s no fit for a court princess of the royal family. So whenever I get a chance I sneak out of my residence and go out horse riding. No one’s going to kill me if I did that right? I might get punished but definitely not KILLED.

I peeked to see if anyone was around. But luckily for me no one was, I took up a barrel which lay close to and slowly crept towards the horse “one , two , tree….”  I whispered to myself while looking around to make sure no one had seen me. I kept the barrel close to the horse and him gently while whispering “good boy, I’m going to ride on you just once okay? Just once” I kept one foot on top of the round headed barrel. Then kept the other, I lifted myself up to sit on the horse and the next minute I was up. I was happy, very happy because this horse actually let me sit on its back for the first time! though I had tried before every time I fell off or something bad happened. For a moment I couldn’t believe it I actually thought I was dreaming but the happy dream drifted away with the sound of my waiting maid shouting “AGASSI!” I’m sure it made the horse a little surprised because it refused to carry me on its back. I fell sideways and landed on the ground with a THUD. I adjusted myself up and pulled the edge of my skirt, as usual I had a bruise on the very same spot I had bruised a week ago. My maid came running and asked me if I was okay. I replied “Do I look alright to you?”

She fixed her face to an apologetic expression she had given me previously and said “why do go horse riding when your mother said not to? Besides you have bruised yourself on the very same spot again”

I pouted my lips and said “but this guy let me up on his back for the first time!”

My maid helped me up and said “your mother has been looking for you the past hour and if she finds out you fell off again we both are going to get punished, very bad!”

I looked at my maid with a panicked expression and responded “looking for me? But why? Let’s go hurry up!”

------------------------------------------At the residence of the royal concubine palace-----------------------------------

I sneaked a quick look by the corner of the wall to see if my mother was around and she was. I hurriedly brushed my maids hand off me and walked as usual, half limping... I guess my mother noticed my lame walk that she questioned my maid “Has your mistress gone horse-riding again?”

My maid who was surprised by this sudden question looked at me and replied “Certainly not, my lady”

“Stop faltering lies and tell me the truth!” my mother exploded.

“Ah that was…” I began but stopped when another voice joined our conversation.

“My lady, how do you suppose a daughter who cannot even walk properly go on horse-riding? “I looked up and saw my Father his majesty the King who had saved me not only now but many times before, smiling at me. I gifted him with a sweet shy smile I had given many more times earlier.

My mother looked at me rather harshly as if to ‘say I’ll catch you later’.  I pretended I had not seen her expression as my Mother answered “Yes my Lord, I understand”.

“Lady Jung may I speak with you for a moment while we are having tea this afternoon at the palace veranda?” my father requested my mother directing the whole conversation under a new subject.

“Yes my lord of course” replied my mother, as she bowed deeply. My father moved towards me and said “My daughter, we as royals should never lose our poise, we should stand against what lays in front of us good or evil, bright or gloomy what lies ahead we should conquer, that is what makes a Great King or Queen”.

I bowed and replied “Yes father, I understand”. My father King Jinpyeong is the26th king of Silla. My mother only being a concubine of a king is who made my status to be a princess. I am Seo-yeon, Princess of Silla.
