I love your sneeze

I love your sneeze

It was autumn, mid-season. DongWoon was on his way to school by bike that morning. That was when cupid played his role. As DongWoon rode past a house, he saw a girl throwing flowers out her window. He stopped and stared. The girl noticed and hid behind the curtains.

Wait!” DongWoon called out.

What is it?” the girl peeped through the curtains shyly.

DongWoon picked up a flower and looked at her, “You shouldn't be disposing these flowers,” he started, “their nature’s beauty.”

Ah...mianhaeyo (sorry)...it's because~Etchihoo!!” She sneezed, “I'm allergic to them...”

You sneeze funny!” DongWoon smiled, “I’m DongWoon, nice to meet you!”

Ah...I'm Kwon JinSoon.” she smiled bashfully.

Ah, I'm late!” he exclaimed when he looked at the time. “I guess I'll see you around.” Then he waved happily at her and quickly rode to school.

The next day, DongWoon rode to JinSoon's house and stopped. There were flowers lying on the ground near her bedroom window.

JinSoon-ssi! JinSoon-ssi!” he called.

She appeared at her window and smiled at DongWoon. She didn't why but she was happy to see him again. “DongWoon-ah, anyeong!”

Ah, JinSoon-sii, anyeong!”

That’s too formal, DongWoon. Just call me JinSoon... "

Oh, okay then, " DongWoon said, scratching his head, “Still getting rid of the flowers, JinSoon?”

Ah...mianhae (sorry), I can't stand it,” she blushed, “my boyfriend sends me these flowers everyday.”

I see...but don't throw them away like this,” he said, picking up a flower and placing it in his hair, “don’t waste its beauty on the ground.”

Wow! You're a real beauty now, DongWoonie! "

Ahaha! Cute right?” he did cute pose, “I gotta go now, see you.” he waved his hands and rode off to school with the thought of returning there again.

Their secret meeting went on for a week. It was always the same, their morning greetings and then some small chat and the next thing, he'd ride off to school. DongWoon wasn't sure why he would always stop at her house every school day. But what he was sure about was the nice feeling he felt everytime he saw her smiling at him. Then it was the winter holidays. One morning, DongWoon rode his bike to JinSoon's house. There were flowers on the lane.

JinSoon-ah!” he called to her.

Then she appeared at her window, smiling. “Eh? Where's your school uniform?”

It’s the winter break, babo!”

Oh, ne~ (yeah)...” she nodded, blushing furiously, embarassed.

Why don't you come out?”

Umm...I'm...I'm kind of grounded...”

Come on, come out, chakkan (just a minute)...” he put his hands together, begging for her to come down. It was his first time asking her to come out of her room and it took him a lot of courage to say it.

Umm...” she hesitated, watching DongWoon pout like a little puppy and said, “...okay!”

So she climbed out her window, assisted by DongWoon carefully guiding her steps and catching her when she was near the ground. Then they walked down to the beach, near her backyard. As they sat on the sand, he told her that he just moved to a new house near the area.

That’s why I never had someone scold me for throwing away flowers before!” she joked.

Ah, mian! I just love flowers...”

People say that opposites attract...” she blushed. “He loved flowers too...”

He?” DongWoon's forehead creased. “Your boyfriend?”

Ne...” she answered weakly. “He still sends them to me because he thought that by doing that, I would learn to love them too.”

That sounds nice...” he whispered softly and turned to look at JinSoon. She was inhaling deeply a couple of times and it seemed like she was about to cry. “Yaa, JinSoon-ah...don't –”

Etchihoo~!” she bellowed before he could finish his sentence.

Ahahaha! You know, I always feel like laughing when you sneeze,” DongWoon said, handing her his handkerchief.

Sniff, wasn't it because I looked funny?”

That was when he exploded into laughter as he thought of the many times she sneezed when they were together. It was weird as to why she would always seem cold and her small hands were too. But he liked the way she sneezed and the cute sound that she made when she did.

Stop it!” JinSoon hit DongWoon's hand playfully, “It's embarassing...”

But that didn't stop him from teasing her. Both of them joked around and wasn't aware of the time until the sun went down. They witnessed the sunset together...

He loves sunsets too, you know...” she sighed and rubbed her eyes. “I wish he was here with me...”

Kaja (let's go), let me take you home,” DongWoon offered, feeling uncomfortable to hear her talk about her boyfriend like that.

Anyeong, DongWoon-ah,” she smiled as she climbed back into her room.

See you tomorrow...” he forced a smile, feeling a bit weird about the halted conversation.

So the next day, DongWoon called for JinSoon as usual to apologize for his abrupt behavior. But when she appeared at her window, her eyes were puffy and had dark circles around them.

JinSoon-ah...”

DongWoon-ah...” she wept and instantly broke into tears.

He immediately felt the urge to comfort her, so he climbed up into her room and held her in his arms. her long black hair, he whispered into her ear in hope to help her feel better. After the little incident, DongWoon picked up all the flowers from the ground and helped JinSoon down. Then they walked down to the beach. As she sat down at their spot yesterday, he put the flowers he collected into the sea.

It’s so beautiful...” she said softly, as DongWoon sat next to her.

That’s why I love flowers, they go so well with everything...” he replied, enjoying the scenery. “Flowers are meant to make someone feel good about themselves too. You shouldn't throw them away anymore.”

You don't understand...” she sniffed, tears b in her eyes.

Your boyfriend gave them to you for a reason right? He must still love you, you shouldn't throw his love away like that.”

You don't understand!” she sobbed, tears rolling down her cheeks. “I don't need flowers! You don't understand it!”

Then tell me,” he held her by the shoulders and stared deep into her eyes. “Tell me why you're like this. Make me understand. I want to understand.”

You wouldn't understand...it's complicated...” she shrugged his hands off and turned away.

Then tell me where he is and we'll settle this together. I'll help you, so where is he?”

He's not here anymore, okay?! He's gone! He left me...without even a simple goodbye...he...left...” she faced him with a tear streaked face. Then JinSoon broke into tears again as she told DongWoon everything about what happened with her boyfriend.

He was everything to her and she was everything to him. They loved each other dearly. Then on the day of their 1st anniversary, he was on his way to meet her but a tragic accident caused him his life. But she didn't know, she thought he abandoned her that day and cursed him and hated him. By the time the news of his death reached her, she had already thrown away all the gifts he gave her. And she couldn't express how much she regretted for overeacting to one broken promise and it broke her heart into pieces. She hated herself and wanted him to come back to her. However, a bouquet of flowers that arrived the next day was what put her back together again. It was from him. A note came along with it, in it he told her how he wanted to spend every single day celebrating their love for each other by having the flowers sent to her house everyday. She couldn't believe how much he must've loved her to preorder all the bouquets of flowers. Although it still hurt to receive the flowers, she knew it was because he loved her, only her. But as months went by, she couldn't help but feel that she couldn't continue to live like that. Receiving flowers from a dead man. No matter how much she loved him, she was sick and tired of all the sneezing. But one day, she reread all of the notes from him and found one that said, 'love life and live to love. I wish you the greatest of happiness'. That was when she decided to throw the flowers out the window everyday.

DongWoon was silent as he listened. JinSoon was right, he didn't understand. All the hurt and pain she must've felt all those times he tried to tell her not to throw away the flowers. He wanted to tell her he was sorry but she let out a sigh and spoke first.

If you close your eyes,” she said, “and just listen to the sound of the waves...”

He closed his eyes and listened. The sounds of the waves rolling in and out of the shore filled his ears.

The feeling is so blissful...” she said softly.

It’s hard to concentrate, I feel like drowning...” he said his thoughts out loud. And to his surprise, JinSoon giggled.

That tends to happen the first time...”she stopped and then sighed, “I really want to see the most beautiful flower in the world... "

I thought you didn't like them,” DongWoon said, confused, “What’s the most beautiful flower?”

I’m not telling you! Merong!” she stuck out her tongue at him and laughed cheerfully.

Yaa, c'mon...tell me...” he begged, making a puppy face.

Anyi (no), I'm not telling...” she shook her head.

As they joked around some more, they didn't realize that it was already late.

Ah, it's getting late! Time really flies by when I'm with you...” JinSoon said, getting up, “but I gotta get home now...omma's gonna kill me if she finds out I left the house...” she started to run towards her house, but DongWoon grabbed her small hand and she stopped.

Can I come see you again?” he asked hopefully, staring straight into her still blood-shot eyes.

Sure!” she nodded and smiled, and then she ran home quickly.

The next day, DongWoon went to JinSoon's house on his bike. He called for her, but she didn't appear at her window. The window itself was closed and there were no flowers on the ground where they should be, as always. DongWoon was puzzled and then he went to the front door. He knocked, someone opened the door. A woman, must be JinSoon's mother.

What is it, young man?” she asked, eyeing him suspiciously.

Good morning, I'm looking for JinSoon...”

Ah, so you're the one who takes her out for walks at the beach,” DongWoon blushed at that as she smiled a little, “but I'm afraid she's not at home today. She's been admitted to the hospital this morning.”

Wha-why??” he gasped almost immediately after hearing the word hospital.

The middle-aged woman sighed and stared right past him with a sad look on her face. “Judging by your reaction, I guess she didn't tell you...”

Didn't tell me what...?” DongWoon inhaled, expecting the worst as Jinsoon's mother closed her eyes tightly and clutched her chest.

My JinSoon...she has heart failure.”

DongWoon's eyes widened, shocked at what he heard. Then he averted his gaze when he saw that she still had more to say.

This morning, she received one of those bouquets as usual. I left her for a minute to get her gloves but when I got back, she was on the floor crying, clutching her chest writhing in pain...” tears slid down her cheeks and she quickly wiped them away. “I was just getting her some stuff she needs, so maybe you would like to go see her at the hospital?”

He didn't even hesitate for a second and agreed to the offer. The long ride to the hospital in JinSoon's mother's car was making Dongwoon feel more anxious as he thought about JinSoon being in pain. As they got to the hospital, DongWoon ran as fast as he could to room 143. he ran too fast that he almost missed the room and skidded to a stop.

Omma,” JinSoon said as she turned to look at the person at the doorway. Her heart skipped a beat to see DongWoon instead of her mother. “DongWoon-ah...”

DongWoon slowly approached the side of her bed and sat on a chair there. “Why didn't you tell me...?” he asked with his face down.

Omma told you...cheongmal mianhae (really sorry). I didn't know how to tell you...and I didn't want you to feel sorry for me and treat me like I'm fragile...” she pouted when he didn't even take a look at her.

Babo! (stupid)” DongWoon cried, gazing up at her startled face. She could see that tears were forming in his eyes. “I hate it when someone doesn't tell me things, important things...especially when it concerns someone that I like...”

JinSoon felt bad for a second but then her eyes widened and fell open. “D-DongWoon-ah...you didn't...just...?”

You should've told me! You shouldn't have kept that from me! I like y-atchoo!!!” he sneezed before he could finish his sentence which caused JinSoon to have a giggling fit despite the seriousness of the situation was supposed to be.

Then you should have told me that earlier too,” she grinned happily as DongWoon scratched his head, feeling embarrassed.

Then they joked and talked for the rest of the day, both of them trying really hard not to worry about the time. DongWoon only left when JinSoon fell asleep and had to be ushered out by her mother with much difficulty. So he had no other choice but to leave and come back the next day. DongWoon walked casually down the hall heading straight to the same room yesterday but JinSoon wasn't in her there. It made him panic to see the empty bed and wide open window.

Where's Kwon JinSoon?” he asked a nurse who was in the hallway.

Oh, the girl with the poor heart? Mianhada, but she got worse last night and had to be taken to the ICU.”

Worry filled every inch of DongWoon's body as he went up a couple of floors to the ICU. When he got there, he asked the counter for JinSoon's room and quickly ran to the end of the hall. And in that room, a fragile figure sat on the bed with her back to the door. She was gazing out the window, her hair blown into a mess by the wind. Without even realizing it, DongWoon walked straight up to her and wrapped his arms around her small body.

You'll catch a cold if you don't close the window...” he whispered, rubbing his cheek against her soft hair.

I wanna go to the beach...” she said without looking at him.

Lets just rest for today...”

I wanna go to the beach...” she repeated, still not glancing at him.

But you're in the ICU, the nurse won't allow you to go outs-”

Suddenly, JinSoon roughly pulled his arms off her and she glared at him with tearful eyes. “Then get away from me! Go away! Don't even bother coming if you can't grant me one simple death wish!”

DongWoon was taken aback but he didn't like the way she said those words to him. “What death wish? Who's dying?!”

What? You thought I'm not gonna die with the state that I'm in right now?!” she cried, tears falling rapidly from her eyes. “I only have a week left to live and you can't give me the one thing I really want right now??”

Everything she just said left him speechless. He knew something along the lines was about to happen but it was so hard for him to absorb everything at once. It took him a few seconds before he could get the words out of his mouth. “A week...JinSoon-ah...that's...”

Forget it,” she sighed and went back to staring out the window, wiping away her tears. “You don't understand.”

Deep inside him, he knew he wouldn't understand. He knew that. And as much as he wanted to argue with her about staying at the hospital, they ended up at the beach anyway after sneaking out the back entrance.

Gumawo,” JinSoon said when they settled down at their usual spot. “for trying to understand even though I know you don't,” she let out a little laugh. “You know, the day I got admittted to the hospital, I got those flowers like usual...but the note was different that time...”

DongWoon glanced at her intently. “So what was written on that note, was what caused you to be hospitalized...”

Ne (yes),” she sighed. “The note read, I love you more than you could imagine but I'm sure someone else out there could love you more than I do. He actually said that. Even if he isn't dead right now, he expected me to love someone else than him.”

It was awkward after that. He wasn't sure what to say because he believed it to be true. And maybe he wanted her to believe it too.

I know what you're thinking...but what do you expect from someone who has only a week left to live?”

DongWoon stared into her puffy eyes and shook his head. He was still upset. “JinSoon-ah...a week...”

Ah,” she faked a laugh and gently pinched his cheek, trying to cheer him up, “there are 7 days in a week, you know...”

I’ll find you the most beautiful flower in the world,” he grabbed her hand before it fell to her side again. Then he smiled warmly and touched her face with his free hand. “I'll find it for you...I promise...”

You don't even know what it is...” her voice fell into a hushed whisper, surprised that he even wanted to try. “or how it looks like...”

I don't care,” his husky voice filled the space between them, as he rubbed his fingers against her cold hand. “I don't care...”

JinSoon smiled and had him send her back to the hospital before it got any later. On his way home, DongWoon dropped by JinSoon's house and asked her mother about the flower.

Ah, she mentioned this to me before,” she started, “it's called the 'Red Magic' flower. Eventhough its called red, it's actually blue. But if you're lucky enough, only one of all the flowers that bloom would be red. It's so unfortunate that it only blooms when it snows, that's why it's magical and beautiful. It only grows in cold areas like on top of the mountain 180km from here. We've seen it before but they were still flower buds. I'm sure my JinSoon would really love it if she saw it bloom.”

After that, DongWoon thanked her and went home. But he was restless, he kept thinking about JinSoon and the flower. Snow was supposedly to fall during christmas that year and that was 6 days away. So he made the decision to go up the mountain and was able to close his eyes for the night. The next day, DongWoon rode his bike to the mountain. It took him one whole day to reach the peak of the mountain. When he got there, he saw that the flowers were definitely growing there but they were still hiding in their buds. Fortunately, he had thought of a plan and unearthed a flower to placed it into a cylindrical container with soil in it. It took him another whole day to get home. It was already night at the time, so he showered and rested that night.

The next day, he went to the hospital, bringing along the flower. He was so excited to show the flower to JinSoon that he forgot to put his gloves. His hands were shivering from the cold but he dismissed it as he entered JinSoon's room.

Ta-da~!” DongWoon showed JinSoon the flower. And when he saw the look on her face, he couldn't help but smile from ear to ear.

Wah...what is this plant thing?” she said with a puzzled look on her face.

Huh?” he gasped, surprised that she wasn't the least bit happy to see the flower. “What do you mean, plant thing? It's the miracle, magical—what's it called flower that you wanted to see bloom so much!”

That was when she started laughing hysterically which left DongWoon confused. “I was just kidding, babo! I can't believe you'd go to the trouble to look for this flower...” her smile disappeared from her face and tears started forming in her eyes, “I’m so touched, DongWoon.”

I always keep my promise, especially for someone I love...” he gently pulled her into his arms and placed his chin on her small shoulder, “JinSoon-ah, saranghae (i love you)...”

DongWoon-ah...” she sobbed and wrapped her arms around his neck, “I wasn't gonna tell you this, but you've been so caring and honest to me. So you deserve to know that tomorrow I'm going into surgery, it's the doctor's last attempt to try and save me...”

I’ll be there for you...” he whispered back and her hair lovingly, holding back tears that threatened to leave his eyes.

After JinSoon fell asleep, DongWoon went home. The next day, he went to the hospital early in the morning because JinSoon's surgery was scheduled in the morning. When he got there, the doctor was already taking her to the OR. DongWoon ran to her side and held her cold little hands.

Take care of my precious flower...” she said and had to let go of his hand as they arrived at the OR.

As she entered, she saw him nod in reply and smile slightly. DongWoon and JinSoon's mother waited until the surgery was over. It took up a lot more time than they expected and all they could do was pray for the best. But when the doctor emerged from the door with his face down, DongWoon couldn't help but fear the worst. JinSoon's mother stood up, anxious to know how her daughter was doing. The doctor took off his surgical mask...

Chesonghamnida (so sorry), her condition got worse and too critical for us to continue the operation. There was nothing else we could do to help her. If only she had accepted the surgery months back, we could've cured her. But it's too late now, there's not much time left and I suggest that she lives her remaining days comfortably in this hospital...” the doctor said sadly.

The middle-aged woman broke down in tears and seemed to be in grieving state already. DongWoon held his head down, unable to say anything comforting in a situation like that. Then JinSoon's mother told DongWoon to look after JinSoon and he nodded vigorously, fighting back tears. He understood why she told him to do that, she couldn't handle seeing her own daughter suffer her last few days. He was heavy hearted himself. When DongWoon had calmed down, he entered the ICU where JinSoon was lying on the bed, still unconcious. He sat beside her and stared at her pale face until he fell asleep.

The next day, when JinSoon woke up, she was surprised to see DongWoon sleeping on the chair with his head on the bed. She glanced at her hand which felt warmer than they should be, and saw that he was holding it firmly in his. She wanted to cry, but the tears didn't come out...it hurt her so much to see him when she was in a this state. She took a deep breath and then decided to wake him up. So she knocked on his head three times like she would on a door.

Ouch!” he cried, getting up while rubbing his head, “that hurt! How can a sick person hit so hard?!” he realized too late that his words were wrong to say and looked at JinSoon in an apologetic way.

But she just laughed it off like it didn't even matter to her. “Mian, I just wanted to make sure you were still alive.”

Don’t say that...” DongWoon's features hardened as he stared at the girl curled up in blankets.

Mianhaeyo...” she pouted and then it was her turn to look at him apologetically. And changd the topic. “Where's omma?”

Oh, she left last night and told me to look after you.”

Omma...” she said sadly. “She's always like this even when I need her most. But she was never the strong type anyway.”

An awkward silence surrounded them as JinSoon shifted uncomfortably on the bed and DongWoon picked out the sllep from his eyes. Then suddenly DongWoon spoke up, “Last night, the doctor said something about another surgery that was scheduled moths ago. But you didn't want it, why?”

JinSoon avoided his gaze, guilt taking over her for feeling something else for her friend. “That's an old story. No use crying over spilt milk.”

Tell me,” his hand grasped hers and touched her cheek with the other. “Please tell me, why didn't you do it?”

She tried pulling her hand away but he held them tightly. She let out a sigh and faked a laugh. “It's not like it was gonna do any good anyway. At that time, I already accepted the fact that I was gonna die. So there was no need for a surgery. Actually, I wanted to die so bad...because I wanted to be with him...”

DongWoon gulped and nodded. “Him, huh? But why accept the surgery now when it's already too late anyway??”

You just never understand, do you?” she snapped and gave him a cold stare but her features quickly softened. This wasn't the time to pick a fight, she thought and sighed. “Because, DongWoon, I met you. I wanted to die but then I met you...”

It was weird how she said those words without a single tear coming out of her brown eyes. But DongWoon didn't care, all he wanted to do was embrace the small her and drown her in his arms. JinSoon buried her face in his neck and loved the warm feeling she felt when he whispered in her ear, “I wish I could be with you like this forever.” They stayed on the bed like that for a long time. Silent yet content.

DongWoon-ah, tonight's christmas eve...maybe the flower will bloom...” JinSoon suddenly said as she looked at the cylindrical container that held the flower on the table beside her bed. Then she mumled, “I wonder if it's blue or red...”

We'd have to hope for a miracle for it to be red...” he responded. “Thinking of the possibility, it seems almost impossible that this one's gonna be red, you know.”

Why are you such a kill-joy? Possibilities are just numbers!”

Exactly. I mean, there were about a thousand flower buds up that mountain and I just happen to pick one out of the thousand to turn out red? Impossible, more absurd to be honest.”

Eish, you and your never ending reasoning. You're putting me to sleep,” she pretended to snore and DongWoon pinced her small nose in return.

It’s getting colder,” he chuckled, pulling the blanket to cover her neck.

That means it's gonna snow...” she said softly as she took hold of his hand, “I’m still wondering if it's blue or red...I wish it's red...what do you think, DongWoon-ah?”

I’m not sure myself...” he replied, holding her small hands with both of his. “It's getting late, you should get some sleep.” Then he started to get off the bed.

Andwae (don't),” she protested and held him down. “I wanna witness the flower bloom with my own eyes...with you...”

Okay, I'll stay here with you,” he crushed her softly in his arms as she giggled. “But you know, I really hope it's red too...it's my precious gift for my precious girl...” he smiled sweetly.

Anyi (no), to love you and be loved by you is the most precious gift that I will ever get from you. And the best part is, it's mine alone...”

JinSoon-ah...” DongWoon leant closer to her and planted a kiss on her smooth pale lips.

My first kiss...” JinSoon smiled and added, “and I thought a kiss was supposed to make you feel nice inside but yours just made me feel sleepy, DongWoon-ah.”

Do you wanna sleep forever, then?” he joked and rained kisses all over her pale face. She giggled like crazy and he stopped when she returned the favor. After that, he couldn't stop himself from placing his lips on hers again and again. She kissed him too, like she wasn't able to kiss him again tomorrow. But DongWoon decided to stop when he saw that JinSoon was crying. “JinSoon-ah, mian, did I hurt you?”

Anyi,” she said quickly, wiping away the tears not wanting him to misunderstand. “I was just really happy, that's all.”

Get some sleep now,” he her wet cheeks and kissed her one more time. “When the flower starts blooming, I'll wake you, ok?”

But I don't wanna...”

Just get some sleep first. I'll wake you up when it's time.”

You promise?”

Ne (yes)...I promise...” he told her and caressed her face.

Okay, now I'm sure you will. You always keep your promise, right?”

Of course!” he answered proudly.

She giggled and made herself comfortable as DongWoon climbed off the bed. “Just call my name, I'll wake up...” she grinned.

Shh...” he hushed her, gently her hair. “Get to sleep now...”

DongWoon sang her a lullaby and she instantly fell asleep. He kept an eye on the flower as he did so. Unfortunately, sleep got the better of him too. The next morning, DongWoon woke up and realized that he had fallen asleep. Remembering the flower, he looked into the container and saw that the flower had bloomed! Then he looked outside the window, it was snowing...

JinSoon-ah, JinSoon-ah,” he carefully nudged her, “wake up, the flower bloomed! JnSoon-ah, you won't believe it! JinSoon-ah, JinSoon?!” He tried waking her up and shaking her softly, but still she didn't. “JinSoon-ah” he started sobbing, tears falling freely from his eyes not even bothering to hold them in any longer, “JinSoon-ah, look, the flower...it bloomed...tsk...JinSoon-ah...”

No matter how many times he called her name, she didn't open her eyes...her face was pale and lifeless...Kwon JinSoon was no more.

JinSoon-ah...” he cried and looked at the cylindrical container again. There was a piece of paper in it. DongWoon took out the paper, it was a note. It read; “Merry Christmas, DongWoonie! Live well, eat well and smile always! -JinSoon”.

DongWoon smiled and remembered something, last night, as he sang to her, she whispered something to him. As he struggled to remember, she said the words for the first and last time that he would ever hear from her – “Saranghae, DongWoon-ah...” DongWoon wept and held JinSoon's small cold hands tightly.

Merry Christmas, JinSoon-ah...You got your wish...I just didn't get mine...”
