Just Wondering

Do many readers prefer longer chapters or shorter chapters? Also from an author's point of view, what word length do you consider as short or long?

As a reader I prefer and love longer chapters. I'm honestly not that much of a fan of short ones, and might not even read a story if I find the chapters like too short or something. That's just me though.

As an author, I think that anything around/under 2000 words is short for a chapter (and then around/under 1000 is way too short), and always try to make sure my chapters are at least over 2500-3000 words. I guess what could be considered long to me is any amount around/over like 5000-7000 words, though this what I strive to write and I have been hitting this amount with a few of my stories lately, though I'm hoping to have all my chapters for each story be that long, and maybe even longer!

for me as a reader, if the story is interesting and I'm hanging onto every word, i hate it if it ends quickly. but if the story isn't as interesting and the chapter drags on, i'd prefer a shorter chapter.
as a writer, i write until i reach either a cliffhanger or a change of day. my chapters range from short to quite long (the longest i've written is 10 pages on microsoft word) - but my long chapters only make an appearance at special occasions lmao e.g., if i've mentioned a certain scene throughout the past few chapters and i'm building up to it, i'll make that next chapter worth the wait and make it as long as possible without getting too long or too boring. the majority of my chapters are around 2000-3000 words long, but i never force myself to check the wordcount because then it would feel like writing an assignment for university, and i come on AFF to avoid having to do those in real life!

In 1-shots I don't mind, but when there's many chapters maybe +-5000 is very good length. 3000 makes a good one too, +6000 is a bit too much. I think the font is more important, because I can't read tinier text than is used on aff forum for long times.

as long as the story's good and engaging I don't really mind tbh. I've read fic as short as 500 words and as long as 150-200k words

It depends a little on the story but I happily read 5k words in a chapter. I read many oneshots tho and length doesn't really matter to me then. When I write I try to find a happy medium that fits the story but it's rare that I write long chapters because they're exhausting.

When I write, I end my chapters when I need to shift the story - change place, time or POV. Either that or I end them with a cliffhanger. That's usually what dictates me the length of a chapter. I don't like setting a word count minimum because then, I tend to fill the story with unnecessary descriptions. And from what I've heard from my former classmates, people these days like to skip descriptive paragraphs, anyway. So something like Victor Hugo and his work The Hunchback of Notre-Dame is a no-no.

@mirrue I also find it hard to write lengthy chapters. However, I prefer Lengthy chapters that progresses the story and avoids unnecessary description.

From a reader's perspective, I prefer short-but-packed chapters. I dislike lengthy chapter that focuses too much on unnecessary descriptions and less on the story development.

From a writer's perspective, I prefer medium chapters. Short chapter is hard for me because for some reason, I always end up writing longer than I want. Long chapter is hard too because I'll feel pressured to write long chapters and stress myself out more than I need to.

But then, it depends on the writer on how he/she defines the length of the chapter.

@O605__ Thanks. I'll take your point into account.

It honestly depends on the time between updates and the genre, but for the most part, I like shorter chapters that convey well whatever message is intended. It's probably because I have a short attention span.

@Xtra4U As I reader I also encourage authors to write more. However when it's vice versa I find it difficult to write conscisely without including unnecessary description.
Thanks anyway

i prefer reading longer chapters. As an author, as long as i think i produce good quality work, word length doesn't matter :) even though i, as a reader, i pester and encourage my dearest writers to write more but if they produce short but yet good quality work, it makes up the lengthy chapters that i always crave for :D
