— Shuyun is a fairly tall girl who is heavier than most idols as she works out intensively and has been dancing for many years, but she sticks to her diets so as not to gain too much fat. Her height is 162cm and her weight is 50kg. As of Red Velvet's debut, her hair is long and dyed medium brown, but she had it dyed red and cut bangs for one comeback.

bckground. Shuyun was born in 1992 with two elder sisters, Shu An and Shu Juang. During her childhood years, Shuyun played and bonded with her sisters often. Her family was heavily into the arts and Shu An was also in the drama club in primary school and Shuyun and her family often watched her plays. This spurred Shuyun to want to perform on stage and she started taking ballet classes when she was four years old. She also became a member of the modern dance CCA in primary and secondary school. During the late 2000s, the K-wave was strong in Singapore, and it led Shuyun to discover several 2nd generation K-pop groups.

After her O levels, Shuyun went to NAFA where she took their Diploma in Dance. At the end of 2010, Shuyun took part in JYP and Alpha Entertainment's joint auditions in Singapore, but unfortunately did not make it. Shuyun decided to take a gap year after graduating from NAFA. It was then when SM announced their global audition, which Shuyun took part in, later being accepted as a SM trainee. In 2015, Shuyun debuted as a member of the girl group Red Velvet.

— Becoming a trainee was a big change from Shuyun's sheltered life in Singapore. Back then, she would sleep as late as she wanted if she had nothing to do and do whatever she wanted, but as a trainee she had strict schedules to follow. Also, the language barrier between her and the other trainees meant that she did not have many trainee friends for a while. However, there was one thing that kept her going, which was her sisters. They made it a point to send her a good morning text no matter how busy they were, and some words of encouragement, as well as catch up with her when she was free. This spurred Shuyun to work hard to fulfil her dream. Although Shuyun was not chosen for the first lineup of Red Velvet, she decided to work harder, and was chosen to join the group a year later.
