brainstorming:
- soft child who people overlook and just never get to know minus the brats

- total pushover, especially around confident people aka her sister

- actually an older cousin (since finding look-alikes is hard when it's blue eyes and brown hair) whose dad was not in the picture and mom died during childbirth

- smart, confident, social, etc
- mom is a linguist / museum curator (aka why they have such interesting names). dad is a university math professor. their divorce led to the girls following dad to wherever this story takes place. (mom gets custody during the summers.)

- divorced and moved because mom was constantly at work and never took care of kids. dad got fed up with it because even when he was busy, he'd make time (and he was actually pretty busy given his big-time math papers).

- what if it's her cousin's boyfriend who aureole kind of secretly likes? but then she meets the younger sister and is absolutely smitten and forgets about the boy
- falls in love with person because they're genuinely interested in her and listening to her opinion or how her day went instead of asking about her sister or talking about themselves to "promote" themselves to her (looking at her for her rather than her sister or just her brain or just her looks - beyond that)
