However, in real life, Erika prefers to remain reserved, not speaking unless she is spoken to or unless she needs something. She also doubts herself a lot, blaming herself for conflicts within the group and underestimating herself. This results in her being needy and needing reassurance that what she believes is not true. She really doesn't like conflicts because she's timid and doesn't know how to stand up for herself, and she is sensitive and easily hurt by harsh words.
background. Erika was born to a pair of Japanese parents who migrated to Singapore in the late 1980's. When she started primary school she enrolled in ballet as an extracurricular activity and fell in love with it, learning dance as an extracurricular activity until the age of 16.
When Erika was in her first year of junior college, she took part in JYP and Alpha Entertainment's joint audition in Singapore, and after being accepted to Alpha Entertainment, debuted as a member of Skarf in 2012 (replacing Tasha). After Skarf disbanded in 2014, Erika auditioned for FNC Entertainment and was accepted, and debuted as a soloist after two years of training.
While at FNC, Erika got into a relationship with FTIsland's Minhwan and became pregnant with his child, resulting in her choosing to leave FNC and being scouted by Predisposed Media.

— Erika's dance experience was different from what Alpha wanted for Skarf, and she struggled to learn the steps and dance in heels. She even had to do splits in heels, and was studying for her A levels during the first year of training. Despite the tough life, she managed to do well in her A levels. However, Skarf recieved a lukewarm response not only in Singapore but in other places, and members of the public speculated that Alpha Entertainment rushed to debut them as they were anxious to debut a K-pop group with Singaporean members, which reflected in not only Erika and Ferlyn but also Jenny and Sol's weak skills. Despite a lineup change, Skarf still did not do well and eventually disbanded in 2014. Erika still blames herself for Sol leaving and their disbandment, thinking she was a bad leader.
— In FNC, Erika got to know some younger trainees (who would later be Cherry Bullet members) but she didn't get to know them that well as FNC decided to debut her as a soloist in 2016, therefore training her seperately. — Erika met Minhwan when after she joined FNC. She had caught glimpses of him every once in a while, but as a trainee, she was not allowed to speak to male idols. Yet, she waited longingly for the day when she would meet this handsome stranger face to face.

— After debuting, Erika would drop in to FTIsland's practises whenever she was free, and Minhwan noticed her. They later started hanging out after practise, and once, when a backup dancer ended up suffering a serious injury, Minhwan offered to replace him until he recovered. One night while they were having some drinks, Minhwan drunkenly confessed to Erika that he liked her, and she confessed she liked him too, and they ended up kissing and in bed together, which resulted in Jaeyul being concieved. Though Minhwan was scared, he eventually took responsibility and married Erika.
