BACKGROUND

Joey was born in Seogwipo Jeju as the youngest daughter to a ballet dancer and a banker. 

She had an older sister that was a ballet prodigy and did everything right so of course Joey had to do ballet too. She was dancing ever since she could walk basically. Her mom was strict about her becoming a dancer like herself and her sister so she trained from a young age. She went along with everything her mom said easily like a good girl. 

Whether it was big or small performances she performed from a young age too. She focused on ballet and contemporary dancing but mostly ballet so all her performances were ballet based. When she was old enough she attended Jeju ballet school where her mom taught and they were known to train about children to be ballet dancers from when they were young and a lot of students end up the principal dancers at Jeju ballet school. The training was really rough and strict but since she grew up in it she was used to it. Unlike the other kids she had extra training too with her mom. Her sister did really well so she looked up to her but she was also compared to her a lot. Since her sister was like the perfect student her mom expected Joey to be the same way. A lot of Joey’s childhood were spent trying to live up to her mom‘s expectations and her sisters hype. Joey never got out of the shadow of her sister and of course for college she ended up going to the same university.

On the surface Hayan is very polite with a good attitude. She really seems perfect, she looks neat with nice fashion and is beautiful. She seems so gentle and elegant by how she moves in day to day life. People see her as confident by how she carries herself. She is someone that is determined, she works very hard when she wants something. Since she was little she was training to be perfect so she's good at acting like it. She perfected being elegant and soft spoken for ballet.

To everyone she first meets she's really friendly. She is easy to talk to so many people see her as a friend since she is comfortable to talk to. But behind the smile and kind eyes she is looking you up and down and judging you so hard. After a while people will notice that when she isn't around someone important the way she talks changes a bit. She would say things like, "Wah you're going to eat all that? Should I get worried about your health?"
"If you laid off the snacks you wouldn't look so heavy when you dance."
"Her legs jiggle so much, isn't she embarrassed?"
"Wah unnie did you gain weight from yesterday?"

To her friends she straight up talks bad about other people's appearances and abilities. She doesn't see the problem because thats how she grew up. But even to her friends she says condescending things that come off as offensive yet caring so it's kind of confusing and they're still friends with her. She sends mixed signals by hyping her friends up and supporting them a lot but then would say those kind of comments. She actually really doesn't see the problem with what she says because she grew up hearing those things from her mom and at the Ballet School and her sister. To her it's being helpful for real, not toxic. In the ballet industry eating disorders is common because of the expectations and way they talk so that's Joey's normal.

Hayan gets her competitiveness from her mom because she always told her that she has to be the best. Since her sister had all her past teachers they have high expectations for since they know her mom too. She works really hard to better herself. She is hard on herself but doesn't tell anyone that, others opinions don't bother her it's only her moms. When she does bad in class she isn't afraid of that she's afraid of the news getting back to her mother. She can be really confident and get good reviews until her mom points out one bad thing and she'll lose all her confidence and practice so much to get her mom to approve of her.

Baek Jaein and Ahn Suyung are the parents of Joey. Both are very different, her dad is really chill and supportive. He prefers the background and only really stands up to say anything if he strongly disagrees. The "ask you mother" kind of dad. So Suyung runs everything from Joey's diet to her career. She molded Joey to be just like she wanted, another Hayan. She goes to her mom on the weekends to show her what they've been learning and she also takes a picture of all her meals and sends it to her mom and updates her on her weight every weekend. Suyung is really harsh, all the words that Joey says she hears from her mom even worse a lot of the times. Suyung is the only one that can make Joey cry, she wants to impress her mom still. Suyung always says "You're an extension of me, if you look bad then I look bad and so does all of Jeju Ballet School. Either do your best or don't do it at all."

When people meet Joey they get really surprised because she is a carbon copy of her sister. Hayan is a popular senior at JJU, a lot of people know her for her beauty and personality. She doesn’t care and is all about herself. She is basically just like Joey, or Joey is basically just like her, she smiles to your face and then talks bad about you behind your back. But to all the professors and she is a wonderful student. Girls want to be her and guys want her. Joey looks up to her sister a lot, she copies of all of the things that she does. But she also kind of hates her because Hayan makes fun of her a lot and threatens to tell their mom. She hates that she is compared to her so much and has to be her to be liked. Since Hayan was always the favorite sister she’s just very spoiled. But she's actually not perfect, she rebels a lot by lying to her mom but she believes her because Hayan never lies. She hooks up with many guys in her single room on campus and keeps it a secret. Her secret on and off boyfriend is Wonbin but with his reputation, she'd never tell. She actually feels a lot of pressure and is slwoly crumbling under it but has never told Joey that since she looks up to her.

ROOM PREFERENCES She will apply for a double room. She would like a dancer roommate but anyone is fine.

SCHEDULE She has morning classes and dance in the afternoon. When she's not in class she'd be practicing, rehearsing, taking yoga or pilates. On the weekends she goes to Seogwipo to take her mom's advanced class and show her mom what she learned. She usually spends the weekend at home. Sometimes Hayan drives her there if she's not busy. But she is always on the move, she hangs out for about an hour and then leaves to go practice or something. 

DIRECTION Joey has been trying to become the person her mom wants her to be which is basically her sister. She rarely takes a break because she wouldn't know what to do with her spare time. She could do things she'd do on her break day on a working day so she doesn't see the point of taking a break. But Joey needs evaluate her life and realize if its what she wants. She needs to realize that even her sister isn't perfect and struggling. I want her to get a reality check that the way she talks to people isn't normal or okay too. She also needs to experience life and make memories that aren't just dancing and practicing.

hello! welcome to the jeju university family! can you tell me a bit about yourself?

"Hello, my name is Baek Joey. A lot of people think I'm a foreigner because of my name but I was actually born here in Seogwipo. I've been dancing all my life and I have a dog named Pochi.

out of all the colleges in korea, why did you pick jeju university and why your major?

"My family are alumni, my parents both met here and my sister goes here her name is Baek Hayan. I chose my major because I love dancing and I want to be a ballet dancer. My mom is a ballet teacher at Jeju Ballet School and my dad is on the board so I want to be good enough to become a prinicpal dancer. You might be thinking I could get in easily because of nepotism but my mom is actually really hard on us."

where do you see yourself in 10 years?

"Well, hopefully a prinicpal dancer at Jeju Ballet School. If I don't make it then a dancer somewehre else. I just want to be able to dance for as long as I can. Since dancing careers don't last long I'd want to be a teacher or choreographer later on."

what would you say are your biggest strengths and weaknesses?

"My strength is that I'ma. strong dancer, obviously. I practice like a lot so I'm confident in my dancing. I'm not so sure about a weakness, hmmm... maybe it's that I practice too much. I don't really make time for anything else."

as a freshman you will reside in chungsam hall, what do you look for in a roommate? any lifestyle habits that you find intolerable?

"I'm okay with anything, I doubt I'll be in my room all day since I have to practice but I just don't want to come home to a messy room or a stinky room. Personal hygiene and cleanliness are important to me since I always look my best I expect my roommate to too or that'll be embarrassing to live with."

what are you looking forward to the most as an incoming freshman?

"My mom and my sister have talked endlessly about how amazing the dance professors here are so I'm excited to finally be able to take thsoe classes for myself. I'm also a bit anxious about the ballet class placements since I'm hoping I'll get put into a high level, how can I be the daughter of Ahn Suyung and get put in Ballet I. That's just embarrassing. Oh and making friends would be nice too."
