logical, ambitious, determined, good listener, open-minded, opinionated, private, detached, critical, stubborn, insensitive
PERSONALITY
when it comes to his personality, his parents divorce does affect his personality in one way or another. minhyun used to be a bright and cheerful kid when he was young. however, after the divorce of his parents, especially after always being left alone at home, his personality changed three-sixty degrees; he becomes private and detached. at first, eleven year-old minhyun avoided people because he didn't want people to know that his family was weird, that he didn't have a mom. however, as he grows up, he becomes comfortable being alone and he just doesn't feel the need of having emotional attachment. so it really takes a long time for him to open up to new people that back in high school, some people decided that he was not worth their time and effort and just left him alone. not to mention, he also is pretty selective about whom he opens up to, which is why he only has two friends in high school.

people around him may see him as a quiet, loner, or even snob guy, but if you get to know him, you'll know that he's a good listener. he may not be able to give you any advice – and due to him always using logic instead of feeling and is detached, and hence insensitive to others' feelings, even if he offers advices, it might not be what you want to hear, so he just prefers to keep his mouth shut (most of the time, he already comes up with a logical solution on his mind but just keep it quiet) – but believe me, he will be there for you if you ever need someone to listen to your problem. if you ask him for a solution, then he would be more than glad to give you that.

his personality also can be pretty contradictory with each other, like how he's opinionated but at the same time is persuasive and open-minded. minhyun often times has too many opinions on his mind and he is not shy to voice out his opinion and defend what he believes. though, he won't judge you just because you have a different opinion; he respects everyone's opinion equally. actually, minhyun is persuasive when it comes to his opinion— not because he is easily persuaded, but because he allows it. when stating his opinion, he will leave some room for people to convince him otherwise, for people to change his mind. it might be hard, but when he sees loophole in his opinion, he will gradually change his mind.

minhyun also is very confident about himself; he trust himself and is secured about his skills and capabilities - he knows what he is good at and what he is not. minhyun definitely won't allow himself to be taken for granted but he is not arrogant when is asked to help, nor he will be hesitating when asking for help. due to his ambitious side, every time he sets his goals, he always has a high expectations on himself, and his determined side will make sure he achieves his goal. however, more often than not, he feels the result he has achieved is not good enough– that he can do better than that– which resulting in him being critical about himself, pushing himself to his limit to achieve the goal. this, coupled with his stubborn nature, will easily irritate him whenever anyone tries to change his ideas, habits, or even when people asking him to take it easy.
LIKES
games; usually he plays battle royale and moba games but mmorpg when he wants to relax. though now, he can't play longer than an hour.
musics; he likes indie and hip hop musics more than anything but would rather listen to ballad than rock.
foodies; he loves anything spicy and with spices. especially fond of kebab and tacos. now that he lives alone, he just ends up making his own mexican chicken wrap, following online recipes.
arts; currently, he's into fine art and is learning painting.
photography; not his forte, but he is quite good at photography.
candles; lately, he is also very fond of candles. claims the candles help him calming himself. his favourite scents include sea breeze, clary sage, sandalwood, and vanilla.
coffee; yes, his day depends on coffee. can't really functioning well without a dose of his coffee. a habit he picks up during his time in AReS.

DISLIKES
birds, chicken; he hates birds and chicken.(or more like afraid?? he claims it's both). when he was a kid and went back to his grandma's hometown, he was once chased by a chicken, so he was kinda traumatized by it. as for birds, they look the same as chicken. hence why he hates birds too. though, he definitely loves cooked chicken. he only hates the living chicken.
vegetables; he dislikes vegetable but that doesn't mean he doesn't eat it. honestly, it depends on his mood if he wants to eat the vegetable or not. especially hates tomato and would only eat tomato if he doesn't notice it. like when he's eating burger, he doesn't see it, then it's fine. but when he sees it, he will take that tomato out.
sweet treats; really not a fan of desserts and pastries. again, it's like he won't eat it at all, but as long as he can avoid it, he will.

TRIVIAS
his #1 pet peeve is people who is chronically late. he really values time and is very punctual himself, so he expects people to do the same. usually he would be ready at the meeting venue 10 minutes before the time so if they promise to meet at 3pm, they better be there by 3:15 pm, otherwise he would just walk away
has a habit of rubbing his fingers when he's anxious or nervous
is secretly a nerd who enjoys reading encyclopedia, non-fiction books, and watch documentaries. basically just anything that doesn't relate to his study. it is for the general knowledge, he claims
he has a habit of staying alone in the dark and literally shut himself when he is not feeling well, which really makes other people dead worried when they cannot contact him, though now, he's trying to change this habit.
can be seen a little too frequently at the faculty of music building that some people legit mistaken him as a music major.
what he doesn't know about his parents is that, they married out of convenience, not love. his father's lover, who is now his currently stepmother was in an arranged marriage, while his mother's relationship was broken by her family. they tried their best for the family but after more than ten years, they decided to go separate ways
minhyun
minhyun
minhyun was born to, what seemingly a happy family that consists of his parents, and an older sister who is five years older than him. his mother is a lawyer while his father is a businessman. despite their busy schedule, his parents always had the time with the family. on the weekend, they spent their time going picnic or watching movies together. on weekdays, his mother always made sure to be home before seven and spent the night accompanying the siblings doing their homework.
when minhyun was eleven, he noticed his parents had grown distant with each other. his sister convinced him it was because of their works and minhyun believed her. however, several months later, his father decided it was time to return back to korea, but not without telling him that his mom and his sister wouldn't be coming back with them. when he asked his sister about it, she told him it was because their parents were not destined to be together - he didn't understand that but he at least knew that their parents were going to separate, and so did his sister and him ("because you're with dad, so i'll be here to accompany mom"). his sister though, promised to visit him on holiday.
in seoul, minhyun had a quite hard time trying to adapt to new place. despite of having the parents sometimes communicating with the siblings in korean when they were back in birmingham, he could only read and understand korean. not to mention, it also had a whole different culture. fortunately, he attended an international school so the language wasn't much of a barrier. he only felt this was a problem when he went out alone.
three years later, after always leaving him alone at home because of 'business matters', his father delivered a, what he claimed as happy news - telling him he felt bad leaving him alone at home all the time so he decided to marry a friend whom he met again when the family moved to korea. it was a week before the wedding when his father told him and his sister about that - before that, it was only known to her grandparents and her aunt. it was a great news to his father, never to him. minhyun dislikes his father for making his own decision without discussing it with him or his sister.
his stepmother is a great and loving woman, who have never ever treats him differently from how she treats her own son. his stepbrother has always been nice to him but he couldn't bring himself to treat these two the same. he doesn't exactly hate his stepmother and stepbrother, but maybe it is because he isn't ready yet to have an addition to the already broken family, and the fact that they were planning to get married without even telling him just made it worse.
minhyun only have two people from school whom he considered as his friends so he usually spent his time in front of computer, playing online games (together with one of the friends). it's not an exaggeration to say that he had more people he talked to online than in real life (he never considered those players as friends either), mainly because they didn't know each other very much and there was no emotional attachment between them.
when he was seventeen, after playing league of legends for almost five years and finally entering the top 10 in south korea server for four consecutive months, someone who claimed to be a manager of an esports team reached out to him, asking him if he was interested in playing professionally, and if he did, he may join the youth training that would be held soon.
minhyun wasn't interested in going pro at first. he only played lol just to kill time but going to the training meant that he would live at their accomodation. he didn't like his stepmother and that was his problem. he was not gonna made them uncomfortable with how indifferent he was towards them so he made the decision to go to the training. plus, at that time, he had just finished his SAT exam so why not going there while waiting for university admission. asking for his father's permission was the first thing he ever asked his father for after they moved here so even though his father was reluctant, he agreed with his decision.
minhyun had never thought he would love playing competitively and become a pro player but he also never thought that a few years later, he had to retire from lpl against his wish

2018
minhyun joined AReS youth training in july 2018 for about four months before he was picked as one of the line-up for the AReS second team; AReS Youth at the end of the training, in october 2018. after two months of training as the second team, he was finally chosen to be the captain for AReS Youth in december 2018

2019
in september, AReS Youth joined LCK 2019 spring promotions and managed to get into the spring season the next year

2020
AReS Youth managed to rank seventh in spring season, which can be regarded as quite an achievement for the second team which had just formed the year before. in september, AReS announced his transfer from the second team to the first team, following the retirement of AReS jungler. this transfer caused quite a ruckus among their fans on the internet. they questioned why the team transferred a midlaner instead of jungler, how talented is this new midlaner that the current midlaner had to change his position to cater to him? but it quiet down a little when the team explained that their midlaner was originally a jungler and the only reason why he played midlaner was because the team lacked a midlaner during it was first formed.

maybe luck was not on his side - just a week after, he got into an accident on his way back to his home, which resulting in him suffering from traumatic carpal tunnel syndrome (cts) on his left hand. however, cts was not without a cure. he underwent a cts release surgery two months later.

2021
in april, he joined the spring playoffs as a substitute as he was still recuperating from the surgery. minhyun once again became a subject for online criticism, of course it was because of him not playing on his first ever game. it would be a lie to say he was not affected by this, but his teammates were always with him.

on june, after six months of recuperating, minhyun was back as a starter during the summer season and playoffs, during which AReS managed to get the fourth place.

on september, the team joined regional finals and ended up winning and was qualified for world championship

during world championship, minhyun played very well, but what he didn't tell anyone was that his cts started recurring again way before the worlds. he thought he could conceal until the end, but during quarter finals, it became so obvious that everyone in the team noticed it. he tried to convinced his team that he could do it but the team decided to let their substitute to play in his stead, he couldn't play with that hand anyway. the team ranked fourth- obviously it was not because he was not playing or because of substitue, it was because of their opponent were all strong players, but what did people behind the screen know? they needed to blame someone for their favourite team's lost, so the perfect person for it was him.

on december, he had a talk with the team and informed them his wish to have another surgery but was told to think through it again. the second thing he ever asked his father for was to have another surgery, but was strongly opposed by his father, mainly because if the first surgery was not successful, the second surgery would be as unfavourable as the first one. in other words, it was almost useless to have another surgery.

2022
on january, the team decided to let him go, saying it was for his own sake, but wasn't it obvious that it was because he couldn't play anymore? he couldn't even go to another teams due to his hand injury so what choice did he have except for retiring from the LPL scene? so, on his birthday, he announced his retirement.

after minhyun quitted his esports career, being honest, he really didn't know what he wanted to do in his life. he regarded esports as the beacon of his life and it had been a very important part of it, so to suddenly retire from it, he was left lost and confused. he spent his time dwelling on and imagining what could have been that it actually took a toll on himself; that was when he started having low mood and slowly sank into depression. no one realized it (his father was busy and he barely interacted with his stepmother and stepbrother at home, shutting himself in his room) until he was found by his stepmother in his bathroom with his hand full of blood when she came to call him for dinner. though, when he saw the worry expression everyone had on their face when visiting him in the ward – especially his former captain who blamed himself for this, and his father who rarely showed an expression had a very sad expression on his face – he decided to go to psychiatrist when his father suggested him that.

he wanted–wants to get better so that's why he applied for university, trying to busy himself so he will stop dwelling on that matter. currently, he still needs to go to his psychiatrist once a month. on weekdays, his days are packed with classes and when he doesn't have class, he's busy completing his assignments. on weekend, he sometimes will accompany yuna when she wants to go to art exhibition or just hangs out together. though, lately, he picks up a new hobby; painting. maybe he has been going to so many art exhibition that he starts to be interested in it.

however, there are still time when he feels like he's alive but not living, when he wakes up feeling overwhelmed, all he wants to do is lying on the bed, trying to 'not existing'. usually when this happens, there'll be a long video call with his captain; yihyun. they don't talk during the call. yihyun will be doing his own things and minhyun will be lying on his bed, doing nothing. minhyun understands why yihyun is doing this. after he cut himself that day, yihyun makes it his habit to send minhyun a message every morning and when he doesn't get a reply from him, he knows he must not be feeling well. since they are far away, video call is the only mean he has to make sure minhyun doesn't do anything like before. minhyun on the other hand, even if he is feeling overwhelmed or is not really in the mood for anything, he figures he should actually answer the call. someone is making so much effort in helping him, so the least he can do is to help himself. though, when he cannot be contacted, the last way yihyun has is to contact his bestfriend.

so really, right now, minhyun is just focussing on getting better; he is still learning how to let go of his old dream, still trying to come to term with the fact he will never hold the championship trophy, and he is still adjusting to his new life. if anything, all he wants to do now is enjoying his life as it is while trying to find new things he will love as much as esports, and trying to appreciate the little things and people around him who have been with him through the thick and thin.

as for his family, minhyun admits that their relationship ease a little after he was hospitalized. how long can a resentment last? how can his heart not soften when he saw his stepmother running around everyday, cooking him meal and accompanying him at the hospital? his own mother doesn't even care about him. but it's not easy to fix a broken relationship –they don't even have a relationship to begin with –but again, he's trying. perhaps now, he only greets his stepmother whenever he sees her in the house, but who knows maybe later they can finally sit at the same table, having a conversation while having meal like an ordinary family. it's a slow process for sure, but yes, he's working on it.

as for his own mother, minhyun would like to believe she has her own reason for not contacting him at all throughout the years. but whatever the reason it, he doesn't care and doesn't want to care anymore..

life direction:
minhyun honestly doesn't have much social life. he spends his days attending class and hanging out with his only friend. on weekdays, minhyun wakes up around 6:30 am to jog. usually, he finishes by 7:30. however, when he has early morning classes, he will cut his morning jog short and finish by around 7:10. as someone who values time and punctual, minhyun tries his best to get to the engineering building at least twenty minutes before his class start, just enough time for him to grab breakfast and arrive at his class five minutes early.

after his classes ends, minhyun would stay at the library if he has assignments or tasks to be finished. if not, unless he already has a plan with his friends, he would head to his room, being honest, it's quite boring but minhyun enjoys his time alone more than socializing with people he barely knows.

minhyun doesn't join any club or societies because he really wants to focus only on his study for now, but he plans to for the next semester. he has been surveying a few clubs and societies, and currently thinking about joining either photography club or student council.

on weekend, minhyun's day is not as boring as on weekdays. he either spends his time going out with his bestfriends or if yihyun comes to visit him in jeju, he will spend his whole weekend with him. when he has nothing to do on weekends, he usually spends his time watching dramas or documentary or reading books. just a few weeks ago, he signed up for painting class so his sunday evening, from 6pm to 8pm, is reserved for that painting class.

the dad and mom
name: cho soochan + min jinhwe
AGE: 55 yo + 50 yo
OCCUPATION: businessman + high school teacher
cho soochan used to be a family man when they were back in birmingham. however, after the divorce, cho soochan devoted himself to his work and barely spent his time with his son, so naturally the relationship between the father and the son keep getting worse, especially after cho soochan decided to marry without even discussing with minhyun. their relationship is getting better now. however, he still thinks his father was such a hypocrite back then, telling him he wanted to marry someone because he is feeling bad leaving him alone, because if he really thought so, he wouldn't make the decision behind his back.

min jinhee probably is your typical high school teacher who's everyone's favourite; she's nice, warm, and very understanding. she has tries her very best in getting along with minhyun, but at the same time, she also doesn't want to force her way into minhyun's life and wants to give him time to adapt to everything. it would be a lie if she says she doesn't feel sad that minhyun ignored her before but she understands him.

now, both his dad and stepmother, and minhyun are trying to mend the broken relationship. his dad is always making sure he's home whenever minhyun comes back, and minhyun on the other hand will always have at least one meal with the family every time he goes back to seoul, trying his best to not distancing himself from the family.

min jaehan
AGE: 26 yo
occupation: network engineer
relationship: stepbrother
faceclaim: joshua hong of svt
minhyun and jaehan relationship used to be better than now. before, despite resenting the min's mom and son, and having a (one-sided) bad relationship with them, jaehan used to pick him up from AReS base whenever they had a break and holiday. however, when the two got into accident which resulting in minhyun suffering traumatic carpal tunnel syndrome(cts) that put his esports career at halt (and later he had to retire), their relationship start worsen.

jaehan knows and understands why minhyun blames him; it was him who persuaded minhyun to go home at that time despite him was so dead set on spending the holiday alone at the AReS base, and it was also him who insisted on picking him up when minhyun just wanted to go home by himself.

now that minhyun is trying to repair their relationship, he is actually the one who starts making a small talk every time he goes back to his parents' home. it's usually just a very short conversation like 'you're home,' or 'how's your work', and is still very awkward between them, but at least he makes an effort.
5dccde3005cad070945c97f6d6cf3661.jpg
xie yuna
AGE: 21 yo
occupation: junior at faculty of music, college of art and designs, jju + cellist
relationship: bestfriend
faceclaim: ouyang nana
xie yuna is that one of the two best friends he ever has. they weren't exactly friend at first; her first impression on him is 'what a scary snob'. i mean, fifteen year old minhyun was going through the emo phase at that time, coupled with how he was always alone and how he didn't socialize with his classmates, it is no wonder yuna used to think so. however, after being in the same class for three years and deskmate for two years, they naturally became each other's best friend. though, obviously yuna has her own circle of friends other than minhyun.

while yuna looks sweet and kind, she really doesn't give a when it comes to people she doesn't like or as she calls it; the poeple who don't pass the vibe check. so to some poeple, she might come off as a bit y. yuna also probably is the craziest person minhyun has ever met. she's the type who would be down for anything at anytime, given that she's not in her cello class or is on date with her boyfriend.

yuna is the sole reason why minhyun is allowed to go to jeju university. since the university is very far from the family, adding minhyun's current condition on top of it, his father was reluctant to let him go. thankfully, yuna also is studying there and she is trustworthy enough in the eyes of his father, so while he doesn't really agree with minhyun's decision, he is relieved at least someone whom he knows and reliable is also there. she's also the one yihyun will be looking for when he can't contact minhyun (they were introduced to each other when minhyun was hospitalized and became acquaintance with each other)

in university, these two can always be seen having lunch or going to library together almost every day, to the point where some people mistaken them as a couple. it doesn't help that the fact yuna seems to be his only close friend at the university. on weekend when yuna is not on date with her boyfriend, 80% of the time, minhyun will be dragged to follow her going shopping or watching movies.

park seunghwan
AGE: 20 yo
occupation: sophomore at school of law, snu
relationship: bestfriend
faceclaim: park sunghoon of enhypen
sunghwan or also known as eden is yuna's boyfriend who has become minhyun's friend too, thanks to yuna. he attended the same school as the two and was their underclassman. honestly, minhyun still doesn't know how those two come to know each other because if he remembered it right, he never heard yuna talking about any underclassman. it was just, one day, yuna suddenly brought eden when they were planning to watch a movie together and introduced eden as her boyfriend. and that was how minhyun ended being a third wheeler for the whole day. what brings these two boys closer is definitely not yuna, though; it's the game, just boys be boys.

eden is the total opposite of minhyun; an extrovert, happy-go-lucky, super loud, and just a fun person to be around in general. these two, plus minhyun too, are really the definition of the extroverts adopting an introvert.

as eden is currently studying in seoul, the three mostly get together when eden comes to jeju to visit yuna. minhyun though, tries to avoid going out with them so frequently because he doesn't want to be a third wheel and disturb their time together

does eden ever feel jealous over his close relationship with yuna? definitely no! even in their high school days, these two were really giving off the 'older sister taking care of the younger brother' vibe, and he is even more so now that he knows minhyun likes his captain.

eden is still his loyal teammates whenever he's feeling like playing games (he is the one who played with him every day before he went pro). he definitely knows about what happened to minhyun before, so when they're playing games together, he will the one who reminds minhyun that his one hour playing time has ended and he needs to stop playing and rest (and minhyun be like; "yihyun is not here to watch me anymore, but there is still yihyun 2.0 here")

AReS
AGE: ranging from 20 - 24 yo
occupation: esports pro player
relationship: ex-teammates
AReS consists of the captain, cha yihyun (24), kim hansol (24), lee seungho (23), min youngjae(25), and the newly added teammate, jung kyung (20).

while they are no longer teammates, their friendship is still going strong. jung kyung was in AReS Youth with him and as someone who is comfortable with any position, he was transferred to AReS as the substitute, and now he replaced him as the mid-laner. naturally, out of all teammates (aside from yihyun), he is the closest with jung kyung.

now, their group chats are still as noisy as ever, sometimes full of curses as they can't curse publicly so they let it all out in the group chat. at times, they are so full of concerns about each other that the group chat looks so soft, but most of the time, it is just them being a crackhead, posting memes and blackmailing each other, just for a meal.

minhyun as usual, rarely talks in the group chat but reading their nonsense never fail to make him smile. he still gets together with them when they are not busy and they still treat him as one of them, never like an outsider.

when minhyun had the big fight with yihyun, the group chat had this weird atmosphere despite both minhyun and yihyun rarely talked in group chat. they even tried to liven up the group chat and reconciled these two but it still ended up awkwardly. do they know about him and yihyun? minhyun doesn't know, but one thing for sure is that, they won't stop teasing these two any time soon.
hello! welcome to the jeju university family! can you tell me a bit about yourself?
"hello. i'm cho minhyun, and some of you are better known me as mint, i've heard some of you calling me that," there's a faint smile on minhyun's face as he continues, "but, i definitely prefer to be known as minhyun."
out of all the colleges in korea, why did you pick jeju university and why your major?
"hmm.." he pauses, unsure of how to explain this. after a few seconds of silence, he continues. "let's just say i kinda wanna go somewhere a bit far from my home but also not that far? so i figure jeju would be a perfect place for this."
where do you see yourself in 10 years?
"in ten years?" minhyun stops to think for a while. his fingers keep rubbing each other. "i'm not sure yet, but one thing for sure, i'm trying to live my life to the fullest right now. so i hope the me in ten years will just keep doing what he loves and enjoys his life." after saying this, he realizes how he serious he sounds. "but yeah, probably a software engineer, or if i'm too lazy to code, i'll probably just end up as a test engineer." he lets out a chuckle.
what would you say are your biggest strengths and weaknesses?
"yuna has been saying this for years, that my biggest strength is my look. that's the only reason why she holds herself from punching my face." minhyun laughs as he answers. "actually, if not sleeping for 48 hours straight can be considered as strength, then i think that's my strength. as for my weakness, i've been hearing yuna and my ex teammates saying that i'm too logical? so no one actually comes to me for advices. this is actually the reason why yuna wants to punch my face so bad."
as a freshman you will reside in chungsam hall, what do you look for in a roommate? any lifestyle habits that you find intolerable?
"while i've never had a roommate before, i have lived with other people for a few years so i think having a roommate who respects each other and knows the boundary is actually nice. oh, and i hope to have someone who is not too messy. if not, it's gonna be a chore to tidy up the room."
what are you looking forward to the most as an incoming freshman?
"i think...just everything? it's been a while since the last time i was in school. was it four years ago? so yeah, i hope i still remember how to do calculus, though." minhyun yet again lets out a small laugh.

PERSONALITY

he shines so brightly warm, caring, observant, workaholic
but like the moon he too has a dark side quiet, selfless, indecisive, stubborn

if you ask anyone in AReS about yihyun's personality, they would probably say there is no different from that of minhyun. in a sense, they are quite similar but also, there are differences.

yihyun is just as quiet as minhyun. however, unlike minhyun who is reserved and detached, yihyun just doesn't like to talk. if his opinion is not needed, he prefers to just silently watch them than talking to them. due to this, his warm and gentle side are often concealed by the stoic front; when people start to get to know him, they will realize that yihyun is far from what he appears to be. he is always sweet and cares a lot about people around him. he notices even the smallest detail about a person so if anyone who is close to him feeling down, he probably would be the first one to notice the change.

if there's anything about yihyun that minhyun really wants yihyun to change is that his selfless side. he's the type who sacrifices a lot just so people around him can be happy. it is evident when he decided to agree with his coach, changing his position to midlaner and then when his coach was interested in minhyun, he didn't mind changing back to jungler even though he was comfortable playing as midlaner. this also leads to him being indecisive because he cares a lot about what others are feeling and so, he never imposes his own wishes.

his stubbornness might come off as a contradictory with his indecisive side, but it is what it is. when yihyun is dead set on something that he really, really cares about, he gets so defensive and no matter what you do and say, it will be hard to change his mind. so really, he will either let people make a choice for him or stubbornly fight for his opinion or decision or what he believes is right, there is no in-between.

while minhyun is more ambitious and self-critical, yihyun is just a workaholic. maybe he finds joy in his job – i mean he's playing game as his job – or maybe because he's the captain but out of the all AReS team members, he works the hardest. while everyone is still sleeping at eleven in the morning, he is already in front of computer, practicing. however, when things don't go the way he wants, he doesn't push himself so hard because of it– he realizes his mistakes and learn from it, but not to the expense of his health and mental health, like how minhyun did.

BACKGROUND
yihyun was born in gyeongju in a family of three – he is the only child of the family. his father is a physics professor while his mother is a mathematic professor.

growing up, yihyun has always been 'the other kid' – he's smart and never failing to get his name up on the top of the ranking list. he was well behaved, listened to his parents well and rarely, or maybe never at all went against his parents. in school, yihyun had always been popular thanks to his face. it would be a lie to say if yihyun didn't enjoy the popularity he got – it after all, made his school life easier. honestly, yihyun really had it easy in life but not until he decided to play professionally. both of his parents are from stem major so it would be inevitable for them to hope their son too to major in science major. but yihyun had a different plan – he didn't want to attend university at all.

to say his parents were shocked was an understatement, especially when he mentioned that he wanted to drop out of school when he was just seventeen. his parents tried every way to convince him that esports career was just not worth it but it was only going in one ear and out the other. due to this, there was a crack in the relationship between him and his father. there was nothing his mother could do to make him change his mind, so the only choice left was to support her son's decision.

yihyun was quite unlucky because when he joined AReS, the team was just going through reformation – new coach, new manager, and except for the jungler, everyone in the team was a new player; it was basically a new team, but using the old name, inviting a lot of hate from the original AReS fans. obviously, no one expected anything from this bunch of new players, and even they themselves had doubt but at the end, they proved themselves and other people that they were wrong.

it had been almost seven years since he played as pro, was qualified for Worlds three times but he had never once won the championship. rather than upsetting or disappointed, he just felt like he couldn't prove himself to his father just yet. so his only goal now is to get his hand on the championship trophy so he can proudly stand in front of his father and tell him, 'this is what i'm fighting for'.

LOVE STORY

"are you mint?"
"...yes?"

the first time they talked to each other was during the youth training. minhyun was casually playing with his teammates when the captain of AReS, together with their then jungler came to him and asked him if he wanna try to double row with him. that was an honor for them trainees; not everyone could have this chance to play with THE captain of AReS, so of course minhyun agreed without a second thought. since that day, minhyun seemed to have his evening reserved for the double row with yihyun.

as the captain, yihyun definitely wanted the best for his team, so when their coach euphemistically said he wanted minhyun in their team, he knew he had to give up on his current role. at that time, everyone knew their jungler, kihoon had been thinking about retiring, and he understood his coach's mind very well. AReS had always focussed on mid-jungle core and hence, yihyun freed his evening from any practice and instead went to the youth training to play with minhyun, just to get used to his gameplay and cultivate their tacit understanding.

when minhyun was in AReS youth, he honestly did wonder why yihyun still spent his evening with him but yihyun only answered that he missed playing as jungler so he came to him. it sounded reasonable because of course other AReS members were just busy practicing their own role, so minhyun didn't mind much. plus, everyone in AReS Youth were happy when yihyun came to their practice room every evening. it was a win-win situation for everyone.

however, when he was transferred into AReS first team and was assigned as the mid-laner, he finally understood why yihyun did that. did it ever bother minhyun? no. but he was indeed speechless; how could someone be so selfless? because minhyun would never compromise or back down when it came to what he loved.

"you can just say you wanna play midlane again"
"come talk to me again when you've calmed down"

minhyun started his career in the first team getting a lot of criticism. it did affect him in some way but if anything, this farce made his relationship with AReS members a lot more closer since they would always tried their best to comfort him. when minhyun joined spring playoffs as substitute player as he was recuperating from the surgery, he once again became the center of criticism. boy, did the team members sympathize with him. they had once experienced this, hence they understood how he felt. and yihyun, as the captain and the closest to minhyun in the team, paid a little more attention to him to make sure he was really fine. this included special treatment of having his breakfast (more like brunch) on his table when he entered their practice room (because minhyun usually just skipped breakfast) and getting stared by the captain if his practice time exceeded three hours. so when his three hours was up, minhyun would wander around the practice room, disturbing each of the members and eventually ended up sitting next his captain, silently watching him play as he worshipped how good his captain's gameplay was in his heart. and when minhyun's recuperation period ended, his evening was still reserved for the double row with his captain. no one could move him during the evening, not even food.

maybe because they had become very comfortable with each other but they didn't even notice there was subtle changes between them, until their teammates started jokingly pointing out that yihyun had been very partial to minhyun and minhyun too seemed to treat yihyun a little differently. minhyun wanted to deny it but he realized it really seemed so; he still had his breakfast and evening double row privilege, and it seemed that yihyun's special treatment for him kept increasing. if there was anything, yihyun always put him first, if he practiced until dawn, yihyun never failed to come downstairs to check up on him and gently asked him to go to sleep. one time, he went as far as not going home during their break before the world championship just to accompany minhyun who, unsurprisingly didn't want to go home and would rather stay alone at the base. minhyun didn't understand why yihyun would tolerate his sometimes immature and childish behavior but he soon figured, yihyun is just that selfless and caring — he might be worried about minhyun living alone so he sacrificed his own break.

they were this close so when yihyun asked him sit on the substitute bench during Worlds semifinals, he was already mad at him. but, what led to their big fight was during the discussion with the team, yihyun was the first one to agree to let minhyun go while the other teammates were still hesitating about it, wanting to listen to his opinion first. he really trusted his captain so much that he actually felt betrayed by his own captain because of this. he regretted confiding in yihyun, telling him the matter of his father not allowing to undergo another surgery — he should have gone through it without telling anyone, he was already an adult. not to mention, he really, really hated people making a decision for him without discussing with him first, and yihyun did exactly that. so when he left the base and the team, he spewed a lot of hurtful words to yihyun but he couldn't care less about that.

"why are you even blaming yourself"
"but i'm really sorry"

surprisingly, after two weeks of cold war, it was minhyun who texted yihyun first. he didn't know why but he felt very empty and the first person he thought of was his captain. he apologized to him —after all, he knew he said a lot of bad things to him before and he also realized that what the team did was really the best solution; keeping him in the team would waste both his time and team resources. he would ended up sitting on the substitute bench most of the time and the team obviously wanted a new teammate who could actually play.

however, with this, came also a sudden realization that he could never play professionally ever again. it was like he was suddenly woken up from a dream. the text between them that had just started gradually became lesser and lesser.

yihyun on the other hand, didn't think much about it. after all, that was just how minhyun was. but not until he couldn't get a hold of him for two weeks. his messages were not replied, his calls were unanswered. he was worried but it came to him that he didn't know any of his close friends nor his family. thanks to the form minhyun needed to fill when joining the team, he called his father. unfortunately, the call too was unanswered. though, not even twenty hours later, there was a call from the same number. only god knew his feeling when he received the news from minhyun's father.

minhyun was stunned to see a pale faced yihyun in his ward the next day, and before he said anything, this captain had already uttered the word of apology. it hurt minhyun to see yihyun blaming himself for this and it hurt him even more to see him running to his hospital taking turn to take care of him. he spent the night in the hospital and went back to the base for practice in the early morning.

during those two weeks he was hospitalized, yihyun had never failed to come every day and accompanied him every night. it was weird and funny to see yihyun who was quiet actually talked quite a lot to him. he talked about the most random things ever, but never mentioning anything about the team. maybe because he knew the reason why minhyun injured himself so he was afraid mentioning that would stimulate him.

so really, after these difficult time, he started to see yihyun in different light. yihyun was always kind, caring, and super attractive, but he was no longer seeing him as just that. minhyun did think of the idea of yihyun and him being together once after his teammates teased them a few months back, but he didn't feel like he was romantically attracted to him. maybe he just liked yihyun's company and how he spoiled him, after all.

now a few months later, minhyun couldn't say the same. he didn't know when, why, or how but he knew he had fallen for his captain. maybe he had been liking him since before but never wanted to admit it because of how precious their friendship was to him and never wanted to ruin the balance between the two, or maybe he had never realized the feeling was there since the start because he had decided against getting into relationship with him long time ago.

as for yihyun, he would be an idiot if he still didn't realize what minhyun meant to him. he, from the way he treated minhyun and how minhyun occupied his mind almost all the time, in fact, knew it was obvious that he would develop feeling for him but he didn't expect for him to fall this fast and this hard. however, like minhyun, what he wanted the most right now is for minhyun to recover well. plus, he still was not very sure about minhyun's feeling so he didn't want to burden minhyun with this matter.

INTERACTIONS
if you ask their teammates who literally lived with these two 24/7 (before minhyun retired of course), they would definitely tell you they're dating. it sounds exaggerated, but it is what it is. despite none of these two like talking and would prefer to shut their mouth, no one can deny that they seem to have a very tacit understanding and are always in sync.

they rarely fought back when they were teammates, but when they did, everyone would notice that; there was zero interaction, not even when they played game. usually, they would leave each other a cooling period, lasted about three to five days (the longest was two weeks, during the big fight) and the one who started the fight would apologize and talk first.

minhyun however, after realizing his feeling, tries to keep his distance as he is afraid to get too attached to yihyun but it's almost impossible with how yihyun treats him. this also convinces minhyun that maybe, just maybe his captain might also like him, because logically why would you treat someone this good if you don't have feeling for him? thinking of this, minhyun decides to just ' it' and goes back to how they were.

except for the daily morning message that they both come to agree after he was discharged from the hospital, it can be considered that they actually rarely text each other. minhyun doesn't want to disturb yihyun's practice and by the time yihyun finishes his game, minhyun is already sleeping. so really, unless yihyun texts him first, they will go a day with just that one morning message. however, whenever yihyun is streaming on twitch or youtube, minhyun has never failed to turn it on. while he is no longer a pro player, his gaming ID is still very well known to esports lover so whenever he turns on yihyun's streaming and comments on it, everyone knows he is watching yihyun's, which also dispel the rumor that he and AReS having a bad relationship after he retires from the team. not to mention, recently, he has formed a new habit that is very uncharacteristically of him, which is to video call yihyun whenever he is streaming. it was an accident at first but minhyun finds that is fun so he keeps doing it. yihyun doesn't say anything about it; most of the time he tells the fans he's on video call with minhyun but at times, he just mutes his streaming so no one can hear what he's talking about with minhyun.

as minhyun still needs to go to his psychiatrist appontment once a month, every time he goes back to seoul, they will go out together; watching movies, going to theme parks, parks, galleries or exhibitions. sometimes they just drive around in car without any destination in mind and just stop whenever they see pretty cafes or places. because minhyun is still recovering and yihyun doesn't want him to be alone at home during weekend, sometimes yihyun will spare his time to visit him in jeju. yihyun does think about going to watch esports match with minhyun (because sometimes their coach request them to watch other teams' match), but he is afraid that's gonna trigger him. so until minhyun mentions about it, he will not bring it up.

TRIVIA
yihyun had a girlfriend once when he was in high school and everyone in the team knew about it because the said ex girlfriend is now a public figure. it's the reason why minhyun was afraid of getting too attached to yihyun. he didn't want his feeling to develop too deep just to have him being rejected by him, as he was hundred percent sure that yihyun definitely likes girls.
their family knows about their ambigous relationship. yihyun confessed to his family he has someone he likes in the team and to his parents, nothing was as shocking as the time when yihyun dropped the 'i want to quit school' bomb. minhyun's family on the other hand, just kind of guesses it watching how yihyun treats minhyun. it is safe to say minhyun doesn't know his family is already aware of it.
every morning yihyun will send minhyun a message and minhyun will make sure he replies to that. it's something they agree on because minhyun doesn't want to make yihyun worried and yihyun doesn't want something like that to happen ever again.
once a month, yihyun will take a leave from the base to accompany minhyun to his appointment.
yihyun's contact is still saved as 'captain' on minhyun's phone while yihyun has already changed his contact name from 'mint' to 'minhyunnie' on the same day minhyun's announced his retirement.
yihyun, knowing how to toxic esports circle is, really, really, really didn't want minhyun to continue being in esports circle but never thought that his decision to let minhyun's go would make minhyun feel that way, so that's why he blamed himself even more.

ENDING together, but how they get together is up to you!

comments: it's been a while since i do applyfics actually. but i'm so tempted with this story so here i am. anyway, this is a revamped character but i'm so happy i'm finally able to write minhyun who has been sitting in the draft waiting for the right story for him, so in a way, i'm glad there is this applyfic! though, this appeared to be quite heavy than what i had on my mind before. on a side note, minhyun is recovering from situational depression (usually, it's a short term depression which can be handled with self care etc, or when the stressor is eliminated, but minhyun is more on the serious side which is why he still need to go for theraphy).

lastly, good luck on your story! wishing you the best!

p/s: my another boy is coming soon and i promise his won't be this angsty.

scene suggestions:
✧ minhyun is actually making friends at university please
✧ currently can't think of anything but surely will add more later...

passwords: anthony kwon just because he's super chill and seems like if minhyun is just doing his thing, anthony would leave him alone.
