background/history — To say sehyeon came from nothing would be an understatement. Everything he has now is literally from his own merit, hardwork and devotion. he grinded his way up to something, all on his own. 

Moon Sehyeon was born to high school sweethearts Moon Jaebong and Moon Soyeon. Despite the couple's loving start, their lives slowly deteriorated after having their only son Sehyeon. It wasn't him in particular that made things difficult for them, but rather, their own choices, such as getting pregnant right after graduating high school with neither of them earning a college degree. Jaebong tried to support his young, pregnant wife by working three jobs just to keep them afloat. In the meantime, Soyeon spent her entire pregnancy severely sick and unable to help with the bills. Soyeon's parents could not support the struggling couple because they, too, could barely make ends meet, and Jaebong's family quickly turned their back on him after he announced Soyeon's pregnancy and intentions to marry.

Somehow, the couple managed to get by enough for Sehyeon to be born, and they promised to get through all of the difficult times with their love for each other. That love, however, soured very quickly. Over the years, Soyeon tacked on multiple jobs like her husband but slowly turned to alcohol use to cope with her depression and stress, and Jaebong started despising his wife as they argued more and more about financial struggles.

Sehyeon didn't have anyone to turn to as an only child and that caused a lot of his emotional stunting, bottling up the trauma as he grew. He spent a lot of time alone while his parents worked, and typically when they were there, they had no time for him, exhausted from their packed schedules. So the only time Sehyeon really escaped the depressing atmosphere of his home life was at school.

Even as a young kid, Sehyeon knew something was not quite right with his family. His parents acted like they hated each other and were short and dismissive of him. He didn't have many toys or anything, beyond a small twin bed he'd use through high school. Other children talked about their parents' jobs with pride or gushed about the time they spent doing fun things with their families or just spending time together, and Sehyeon didn't understand. He didn't get why his life wasn't like that at all. His parents doing something with him? Never. His parents spending money on him? Hell no, not in a million years.

he starts getting bullied once he grows a little bit to the age that kids start realizing material things are 'important.' his peers who'd once been his friends point out he doesn't have new clothing or cool toys like they do and sehyeon, young and confused is heartbroken. no one wanted to be his friend and he was alone, yet again. 

During career day in elementary, Sehyeon realized some of the weight of his situation. All but his parents showed up and talked about their real careers - hopes and dreams they'd accomplished. They cared enough about their kids to even show up at school. Sehyeon realized at that point that his parents were deadbeats, nothing. They made enough only to buy more alcohol and keep a roof over their heads, but that was it. Sehyeon was forced to suffer the brunt of their choices and he hated them for it.

During his one of the last years of elementary school, Sehyeon's father started turning to alcohol use in his free time, which was the last straw. Before he knew it, both of his parents were alcoholic deadbeats. His father stopped showing up to his jobs and started spending all of his time at bars, passed out drunk, or at 'friends' houses' and his mother took on all the responsibilities of earning wages.

Sehyeon kept all of this to himself, never once letting on at school that there were any issues at home. Instead, he took matters into his own hands to ensure he had enough food and clothing to survive. Sehyeon began to steal. He stole clothes, food, and anything he could get his hands on. Stole himself a new backpack, a lunch box, everything. He knew it was wrong to steal, only because he learned about it from teachers at school, not that his parents ever bothered to teach him much about morals, but how else was he supposed to get things he wanted or needed? His parents barely remembered that he existed so it was his own responsibility to take care of himself.

Although, Sehyeon's behavior didn't go unnoticed by his school, and he found himself getting into trouble a lot by teachers spotting him taking things from others. his bad behavior backfired and He was sent to the principal's office many times, where he threatened to call Sehyeon's parents. Sehyeon would say there was no point, as they wouldn't answer, and like magic, the principal would do it anyways, attempt to call Sehyeon's parents. They wouldn't pick up because they were working, and Sehyeon would just be sentenced to detention in an endless cycle.

Other kids started to catch on and labeled him a troublemaker delinquent, leading him to be avoided most of the time. His classmates feared him as rumors spread, 'he'll beat you up and steal your things!' even though Sehyeon had never been violet. But slowly, he started threatening kids that bothered him and gave in to the rumors. They already thought he was scary, so he might as well take advantage of it to get what he wanted. He threatened kids into giving him their stuff, and it worked for the most part.

One day after getting caught, again, trying to take some kids' lunch money (yes, super original he was), Sehyeon sat outside the principal's office, overhearing some of the teachers gossiping in the teacher's lounge about him. "He takes after his parents. I heard they're just as bad, probably teaching him to steal themselves! They are a bunch of bad eggs, deadbeats. He'll grow up to be just like them. It's just so sad." and something inside Sehyeon snapped.

Sehyeon decided that he wouldn't be like his parents ever. He refused to be a nothing, a deadbeat. He wouldn't be a loser like his parents, aspiring to do nothing in their lives. Sehyeon had hopes and dreams of making money to be able to purchase anything he wanted. One day during his last year of elementary school, he decided he'd start trying to find a way to have a successful career in the future.

He discovered the middle school he'd be transferring to in the following year had many programs he could join. Sehyeon jumped at the opportunity to do something to get away from his home and to start making tracks toward his dream of becoming rich and successful. Although, all of the programs involved spending money, which Sehyeon had none of, and he'd be damned if he asked his parents, hell to the no. So that left one option, the dance program. It was entirely funded by the school, meaning he could get in it for free and possibly win an outside scholarship to a dance studio.

The boys program desperately needed male ballet dancers, all expenses paid, and that's all Sehyeon needed to hear. He had heard before that singers, dancers, and actors were all rich and famous, so he could do something like that, he was sure. Easy money! So at eleven years old, Sehyeon started ballet.

What Sehyeon didn't expect was the fallback of joining the program. It was inevitable that Sehyeon would get made fun of for being one of the only boys in the dance program. Kids that previously ignored him or were scared of him switched personalities like a light, becoming bullies. "Ballet is for girls. You must be a girl." So were the common insults thrown at him by other boys. Those who were once at his mercy took on the role of making Sehyeon's life even more difficult. It's not like Sehyeon really had friends anyways, so it didn't really matter to him if the chances of him getting one were now closer to zero than ever before. Even as a kid, he worked hard and showed determination and devotion like no other.

For years, all Sehyeon did was go to school and go to dance practice. He ignored bullies in school and instead played the role of 'unbothered tough guy,' snarking right back if someone tried to come for him. Sehyeon easily defended himself and was left alone as a result. Despite barely getting by in school, Sehyeon worked harder than ever in ballet. He showed a natural affinity for dance and dedicated himself entirely to learning and perfecting techniques and choreography. Sehyeon was sixteen when he was offered a prestigious spot at a dance studio after viewing his work in his latest recital performance with the school. Sehyeon accepted and started balancing his time between school dance practice, dance studio lessons, and school.

other history timeline points:

- Sehyeon's transition into the dance studio and his parents don't give a . He stops caring about them completely and instead becomes absorbed in his goals of succeeding for the remaining two years of high school. He WILL get out of that house, never see his parents again and become something. Something much more than those losers could ever hope to be. That was his only goal, his only motivation.

- His grades slip because he doesn't care about anything else but being perfect at dance. His opportunity at his new dance studio is threatened if he can't keep his grades up. He then meets chaewon, a fellow dancer who helps him pass so he can continue being a part of the studio roster. Despite being a rich girl with lots of privlege, chaewon is sweet and kind. She pushes past all of his barriers and becomes his first real friend.

- At 18, Sehyeon develops feelings for Chaewon, and they decide to date. He thinks it might be a bad idea though, because he doesn't want to end up like his parents. He opens up to her about his home life, and Chaewon comforts him. they're close and she balances him well. she brings out a softer side of sehyeon and its all good.

- a coveted position opens up at a famous dance university that the studio dancers start competing to get. Sehyeon wants it so bad he can taste it and chaewon encourages his efforts. chaewon herself says she's thinking about perusing ballet in France and has no interest in the uk school position that sehyeon wants.

- Their relationship develops into first love. that all changes when sehyeon finds out from other dancers that Chaewon gets offered the position he wanted in the UK. feeling all kinds of things, mainly bitterness and jealousy, but mostly betrayal because she didn't tell him herself, Sehyeon gets upset and dumps Chaewon. she tries to explain to him that she doesn't want the position and didn't mean to keep it a secret from him but sehyeon won't hear anything.

- he now believes she's just a liar who wanted to undermine him. He thinks it should've been him to get the position because he's worked so hard and deserves it more. He realizes that Chaewon has always had a good and easy life, which is unfair in his mind. Chaewon, in turn, is offended that Sehyeon would turn on her like this and says he's destined to turn out like his parents or end up alone.

- to get back at him, She leaves for England, and Sehyeon is envious and heartbroken. He puts his feelings into dancing, becoming consumed by his perfectionism, and shuns everyone else in his life. He refuses to try to make any other kind of friend because he just knows they'll leave him in the end. Friendship and love were distractions, just look at his parents and how that turned out for them. Sehyeon was better than that.

- Sehyeon flourishes, but his attitude plummets, and it starts to affect his dance career. He stops getting lead roles in recitals and productions and watches as his peers are offered prestigious spots in dance universities and studios across the globe. His jealousy gets the best of him, and in an envious rage, he quits and declares he'll be an idol instead. Idols are even more famous than dancers these days, and Sehyeon will show them all that he's the best.

-He auditions to Daebak and gets in on his merit alone but doesn't make friends with other trainees, instead focusing all of his time and energy on practicing and learning in order to debut.

-It's not until he's confronted by the CEO that in order for him to even have the slightest possibility of debuting, he needs to get a better attitude and stop scaring other trainees and being disrespectful to his superiors that Sehyeon realizes his whole life has been spent pretty much alone and he's just as lonely and sad as his horrible parents.

- He's in denial at first, embarrassed and angry, saying the CEO is wrong. But his eyes are open. He starts seeing himself for who he really is and the things he's done. He's been an to the only person who cared about him and tried to ruin any other chances at friendship with everyone else. He'd been cruel to others, only thought about himself, and really didn't deserve in life, even if he was a good dancer. He had always thought he was better than his parents, and he had become them - the people he hated. He was turning into a good-for-nothing jerk, which was just as bad, if not worse. Sehyeon isn't just magically cured after this realization because that's not have life works, but he becomes more self-aware and tries to open up even a little bit to others. It's time to let people in and give them a chance.

- Sehyeon does make progress with his self-reflection and ends up debuting with Horizon. For the first time in his life, he's being forced to work as a team with others, to rely on them and take care of them. He'll never admit it, but debuting in Horizon changes him. He learns slowly to become a teammate and friend, and all of that cold exterior melts over time to reveal a more caring, playful, and fun person who is one of the most devoted to success. He's one of the rocks for the group, unshakable and always determined, even when Daebak gives them away to Blank Entertainment. Sehyeon turns all of that negative energy and pent-up frustration and trauma into fighting for his position and the validation of s against Misfit. Not only is he out for himself this time but Horizon as well.
