My Top 10 Hated K-pop Girls
So I think I’m doing this mainly because it’s been on my mind as I continue to watch the lists of top ten girl groups and their songs as they come out for 2014 (I’m also having writer’s block so hopefully this will clear that up). I just realized that I just really for almost no reason at all hate some of these girls. Some of them actually ruin their entire groups for me and I can’t listen to the group’s song without feeling bitter.
I just want to make this very clear before you read this list. IT IS MY OPINION. It no way represents multiple people’s opinions. In fact, I’m hoping some of you can change my mind about these people, so that I can enjoy their music more.
I also promise to provide facts and examples as to why I hate these people. I won’t just say they’re ugly because that’s not true at all. I actually think that some of the people on the list are extremely pretty. I just need to get this off my chest. Without further ado:
My Top Ten Hated K-pop Girls
10. Hyuna (4minute)
I think everyone knew that she was going to appear on the list somewhere. First off let’s make this clear that this girl is gorgeous. I’m not positive if the rumors about her getting plastic surgery are true, but if they are, I’m going to the doctor she went through. I have a very interesting opinion about her. I love her, but hate her at the same time. Her songs are super catchy and I do think she has some talent.
What I hate about Hyuna is how Cube chose to market her. The picture above is a perfect example of them making her over ualized. She gorgeous obviously, but seriously? I just feel like she isn’t marketed right and that’s why I hate Hyuna the stage personality. Normally, the girl comes across as being very sweet and has repeatedly said she doesn’t act like she does on stage and I believe her.
She also has a lot of talent in dancing, but instead of Cube taking advantage of that they just make her twerk. I love her music, but I hate how she’s marketed.
(Video of her interacting with a kid that I found differed greatly from her stage personality: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fPHJMTKF6U)
(Video of her dancing with more style than appeal. The thing Cube should have worked on training more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFz2FhQP8TM)
9. Bora (Sistar)
This one is a little hard for me to describe. I guess I see why people as a whole can hate Sistar as a group because they do y concepts that can sometimes walk the fine line between y and, I’ll be honest, cheap y. I love this group and they’re definitely in my top four girl groups. My defense for them is that they were all crazy talented, even Dasom who had been the weakest in the group started showing off nice vocals this past year (Yes they’re not that special, but it mixes well with the group).
What I think doesn’t mix well with the group is Bora’s rapping usually. I think she might be one of the most over rated female rappers in the industry. Yes, I would say she may be more over rated than Hyuna (sometimes…). Now that Dasom’s singing I find that she is the weakest in talent among them, even though she can dance.
I just feel that her rapping doesn’t really match most of Sistar’s songs. It’s easier for me to point out the title songs (Touch My Body and So Cool) where her rapping actually matched the mood of the song than it is when she didn’t. She also receives constant praise for her looks, but honestly (this is completely my opinion) I don’t think she’s really that pretty compared to other idols. She’s still pretty though obviously. I think my main reason for disliking her is that she seems to detract away from the other members and their talents. Not much of a reason and yet I still dislike her.
(For evidence try listening to So Cool (1:33-1:47) it matches the mood of the song well. Then listen to Give it To Me (2:23-2:36) the tone sounds similar to me even though the songs are different and it seems like they played the music louder to try and cover up how forceful her rapping can be.)
8. Wendy (Red Velvet)
I can keep this one short and simple. She said things that I personally find insulting by imitating various stereotypes on multiple occasions. I just find that not okay not matter who is doing it.
(Here is an article written about it: http://www.allkpop.com/article/2014/11/internationals-netizens-criticize-red-velvets-wendy-for-her-impression-of-white-and-black-people)
Although I was disappointed that those around her laugh I can understand her need to try and stand out and be funny in the group. I just don’t like the way she chose to do it. Since Stereotyping is something I take very seriously because of my mixed heritage and being bullied when I was younger because of my mixed heritage. I find this very hard to hear about especially when someone who wasn’t born in South Korea and should know better does something like this.
The reason that I’m not putting her a lot higher on the list is that she debuted recently and I don’t want to completely hate her and put her up higher on the list (she was originally switched number 6). I just have hope that maybe she’ll somehow make up for this since she is still in that awkward I just became a K-pop idol phase.
(For further information about this one check out my blog post: http://www.asianfanfics.com/blog/view/961078)
7. Dara (2NE1)
2NE1 is one of my favorite groups if not my very favorite, but I find myself wondering why Dara is in it. Besides the fact that Dara is gorgeous and she does have a charming personality, she doesn’t really bring much to this awesome girl group. YG attracts a lot of very talented people and I wonder why she hasn’t been swapped out for someone who is very talented. Maybe hate isn’t the right word for her. Maybe I just don’t find her interesting enough to take notice of anything she does. I just find it odd that I could be completely okay with her being swapped out for another girl, even though I love 2NE1.
(For evidence listen to any 2NE1 song and see how often she contributes to the song. I also sometimes find her voice annoying.)
6. Hyoyeon (SNSD)
So I’ll start off by saying that she is underrated when considering the members of SNSD. However, I also feel like she gets overrated when people start talking about the best dancers in the K-pop industry. No doubt she is in the top ten. I want to make that clear that she is an amazing dancer right now before I somewhat contradict that.
I feel like she is not the best dancer. She often gets praised for doing a lot of basic hip hop moves that most guys in boy groups can do. I think what makes a great female dancer is either completely erasing your femininity during a dance or somehow being feminine while dancing well. I think she can accomplish the first one, but I find that she lacks a bit at the second one. Another thing is that she tends to look, so good dancing it attracts away from the other members and they’re over all cohesiveness.
I also find her personality off putting at times. I think she overestimates herself just a bit and I can’t stand that. I do also realizes that this could just be me taking the things she says the wrong way.
(Beginning of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8nZCiI8dhY Although I can see where she’s coming from I feel like she gives two positives to herself instead of something to improve on.)
I also struggled a bit placing her at a number on the list. Honestly, she could be switched with Dara depending upon the day.
5. Suzy (Miss A)
Honestly, I think she might be the second most overrated female K-pop star in the industry. Yes she’s pretty and yes she has vocal talent, but I find that there is just a lot of hype and arrogance behind her. I find that she seems insincere at times. I love Miss A, but as I learned more and more about Suzy I began to be less attracted to them as a group.
Whenever Miss A is brought up the conversation goes to how pretty and talented she is. Honestly I prefer Min’s vocals over hers, but I also do prefer lower voices and she has a higher pitched voice. She also seems to act very entitled to things and shows little emotion when receiving awards. Not only that, but there are major rumors floating around about her attitude. Perhaps if it was one or two I wouldn’t really factor it in, but there are so many that point to her that it’s hard to ignore. She also seems very distant from the other members and seems to act like she is above them at times.
(Article and video of her acting somewhat entitled: http://www.soompi.com/2013/12/31/suzy-is-harshly-criticized-for-her-behavior-during-2013-mbc-drama-awards/. It seems not like she’s nervous, but rather like she doesn’t care that she forgot her speech.)
(Rumors about her: http://www.asianjunkie.com/2013/04/media-runs-malicious-rumor-about-miss-as-suzy-that-was-found-on-message-board-journalism/)
4. Ailee
I want to try and talk about her in a logical way, but this girl just continually pisses me off. She’s not higher on the list because she’s not in a girl group, so I can easily annoy her. My biggest issue with her is her over confidence. Confidence is something that I don’t see as a bad thing. I actually enjoy seeing idols with a sense of confidence like CL(2NE1), Gyuri (Kara) and Kahi(Former After School). I’d say out of those three she’s closest to Gyuri in personality, but somehow her confidence comes across as awkward and too much. It makes me feel awkward seeing her address some people with too much ease and pretend that they’re close. She also tends to try and upstage people when they perform together in a way that makes me cringe a bit.
(For example check the interview with Hyolyn (Sistar) during the rival special in which she acts overly confident and very close to Hyolyn at inappropriate times.)
(Upstaging: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QKQNZNUJZA (2:00). Although it may be debatable if Hyolyn deserved to get that note the fact is she did. The other performer decided to stand still, but Ailee chose to pretend it was her singing it and go all out for it. I found that a bit rude honestly.)
I also find myself hating her because of the rivalry between her and Sistar’s Hyolyn. I think they’re both really equal on the vocal spectrum it comes down to which type of soprano you prefer. It’s amazing how people get so insulted by the Korean Beyoncé thing. I find that both fan groups lash at each other too much. In my opinion Hyolyn is the Korean Beyoncé because she is more similar to her style in both appearance and performance. In shorter words she can dance which is a big part of Beyoncé. I’d say Ailee is more of a Christina Aguilera. I also find the way her fans defend her sometimes to be of putting. The same can be said for Hyolyn’s fans though.

3. Sulli (F(x))
I don’t even know where to start from with this one. This girl has caused so many problems for her group and even some other groups. I want to give her compliments like I do with the others on the list, but my mind draws a blank. She has completely turned me off to anything that she does. I won’t even use her recent dating scandal in this list.
She left her group because she was “sick”, but then posts instigram photos almost a day later and using that as a cover up to what she wants. Maybe if it wasn’t in the middle of promotions and closer to the end of them I would understand, but F(x) was finally getting some recognition and she just ruined it. She also stated that she wanted to focus on her acting career, but being honest she can’t act very well. She acts very cheesy and cringe worthy, ‘To the Beautiful You’ is a great example of that.
(Article: http://www.allkpop.com/article/2014/07/fxs-sulli-to-take-a-temporary-hiatus-from-her-activities-red-light-promotions-revealed-to-have-come-to-an-end Another Article: http://www.allkpop.com/article/2014/07/fxs-sulli-ill-with-cold-unable-to-film-for-music-bank)
Then there’s the whole she never apologizes thing. That is partially SM’s fault, but still she should have apologized for using a Chinese swear word. Now there was the whole ‘I’m going to troll the world by fake dating Taemin thing’ (https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.151380628239194.28749.127144553996135&type=3) Although it may have possibly been true and half of it was fan based she continued to give fire to the rumors and that sincerely annoyed me.
She’s just scandal after scandal and she detracts away from the other members of the group. I also think she purposely acts cute which I find extremely annoying. The with the constant scandals I can’t take her seriously. I also find that leaving the group in an act of selfishness is hardly anything commendable.
2. Minah (Girl’s Day)
This is another one where I can’t find any compliments to give her other than sometimes she can be a good dancer. Otherwise I find myself more often than not wanting to claw her eyes out for multiple reasons. The main one being the over use of aegyo that makes my eyes and ears feel like they’re bleeding. Although she has calmed down recently her early activities have been enough to prevent me from liking Girl’s Day.
I think she might possibly be the rudest girl on this list. I mean things like wanting to prove you’re good happen very often on variety shows, but she may be the only one who will tell people that she is better than her seniors in direct words. I find that to be extremely rude. Other people have done this before, but they usually do this with the backing of someone else, but she does it rudely to get attention.
( Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ms24lbemGO8 I think that challenging a senior that obviously is rude, but in my opinion she still lost which makes it seem even ruder.)
Not only that, but she acts innocent when she does things like that and that pisses me off even more. People like Kara’s Gyuri act over confident a lot, but you can see that sometimes they don’t believe what they’re saying or are joking. I don’t see her joking around.
I also find that she is regarded as the best singer of Girl’s day, but she makes mistakes dancing and sometimes hits notes out of tune. Which isn’t that odd considering members of both boy groups and girl groups make a lot of mistakes. It’s the simple denial that she’s done anything wrong that upsets me. She also get more parts in performances with people who I consider better at performing than her. I think she got overrated.
There is no doubt I can understand trying to get noticed and get you group ahead, but just thinking about the amount of seniors she had to insult and claw at to get to the top makes me disgusted with her.
(She is one of the people I’m hoping you can convince me to like so maybe I can listen to a Girl’s day song without being pissed.)
1. Taeyeon (SNSD)
I think that Taeyeon is the most OVERRATED K-pop star to ever live. That sounds vicious, but it’s hard not to be when there’s constant praise flowing to her and I can’t understand why. There’s the obvious vocal talent, but I would say that she’s no longer the best, even though she is notable. Her fans will defend her to the end by insulting almost everyone else brought up to defend her. She’s good, but I don’t think she’s that good.
The only good thing that I think she’s ever done is date Baekhyun believe it or not. Power to her for doing that. I always choose to believe in love and clearly she does too.
She also happens to be one of the only SNSD members to quite forwardly deny plastic surgery even though she has had some procedures done. Is it all the things people are saying, probably not, but the eye lid surgery had to be done. (https://yoontaeyeon.wordpress.com/2012/12/18/news-snsds-plastic-surgery-has-unveiled-yoonayurijessicatiffanytaeyeonsunnyhyoyeon/) Plastic surgery doesn’t really bother me it’s just the fact that she denies it that bothers me.
I sometimes find her attitude weird, but that is probably just my personal opinion about people like her and not liking that personality.
My main hate for her stems from the sheer preferential treatment she gets for being pretty and the “best” singer in the industry. I think both of those things don’t have an actual answer, but for some reason she keeps being chosen. I don’t think that she is the prettiest or most talented girl in the industry and I am annoyed that I have to keep seeing it. I’m not saying that she’s ugly or untalented; I just don’t think she is the best.
Also with the coming to light of Jessica’s departure from the group she was one of the members the fandom was really looking on to shed some light on the situation and give support, but she seemed detached and uninterested in the subject. She was obviously dealing with a lot, but it would have been nice if she as the leader provided some support to the sones out there who were struggling and confused about the situation. That happens to be one of the main reasons I dislike her, but this could be my misunderstanding as well.
So I hope this list was at least an entertaining read. If you couldn’t understand why someone was hating on your bias maybe this might help. Feel free to provide some people to the list or give me reasons why someone shouldn’t be on the list. However, please do respect my opinion. I’ll answer to everything as long as you aren’t swearing at me.
Thank you for reading!
