〔 △ shinji helps — mixed race characters
the lack of mixed race characters i see on here is really sad tbh
so is the lack of representation for asians who aren't japanese, chinese, or korean.
but that's another topic for another day tbh because i could go on about that for ever.
did you guys know that i planned on applying for a fic with a mixed character ( specifically black + korean ).
bc even though the story took place in america it was still asian fcs only ( which i could also go on and on and on about )
naturally i asked first and the author said no because "its not a usual match"
like literally. that was verbatim.
and it took all of my strength to not go off on her sorry because kids who are mixed with anything but white are always
swept under the blanket.
likewise, when i go stalk apply fic applicants, most of them are monoracial, but every once in a while you'll find an asian
mixed character ( chinese-japanese, japanese-korean, chinese-korean, etc ) and that's very cool and all because there are
people like that who exist! but other than that y'all are just about as diverse as mainstream tv.
or lifetime movies.
i see a lot of authors complaining about a characters ethinicty like "they can't be 1/4th this and 1/4 this!!" and just general
multi-racial erasure. like hello its sad i have to inform you of this but there are bi-racial people out there getting married to
other bi-racial people who aren't the same mix as them and those people are having babies.
thus, real life people can be 1/4 something and 1/4 something.
dividing it up exactly, say someone's mother was black & white and lets say their father was vietnamese & ojibwe.
that would make that person 1/4 black, 1/4 white, 1/4 vietnamese, and 1/4 ojibwe.
stop race policing because you don't think someone could be 1/4 something. it happens. life happens.
do you also not believe in clothes being made from 80% polyester, 10% cotton, 5% spandex, and 5% silk?
if something is mixed with more than two things does it suddenly stop existing? is it suddenly impossible?
because that's literally what you all sound like tbh and its dusty.
and another thing, i'll see people ( a lot of people tbh ) list their characters ethnicity as "korean-american"/australian/british
those. are. not. ethnicities.
korean is, ofc, but american, australian, and british are not. those are nationalities. korean is a nationality too.
like, ethnicity is your racial profile. nationality is where you hold citizenship.
ethnicity and nationality can be the same thing, and they can be different.
on fourms where they say "check your ethnicity/race" notice how american/british/australian are NOT answer options.
thats because they are not ethnicities like african, asian, pacific islander, latino, caucasian are.
i am mixed, i am african and caucasian ( in the context of white, not from the caucasus region ) that is my ethnicity.
my nationality is american. i was born and raised in america, and hold american citizenship.
i would be australian if i held australian citizenship. i would be british if i held british citizenship.
if you have a character who has a white parent, in the ethnicity box you should put "korean-caucasian" ( or white if you want )
you don't really need to specify which kind of white either tbh because italian and polish and british and french are
all nationalities tbh
also stop making your characters only mixed with white because it implies that relationships cannot exist
without white people, which is 100% wrong. blasians aren't rare, no mixed race child is rare. in this day and age, no mix
is rare at all and to imply that they are marginalizes them and others them. which is a micro-aggression and really racist.
and just because your chara is blasian doesn't mean its gonna be tough finding a fc for them. there's jhene aiko, karrueche tran,
thelma aoyama, crystal kay, naomi campbell, elly, tyga, tiger woods, the rock, ne yo, denyce lawton, kelis, amerie, amira ahmed,
will demps ( zaddy ), cassie, mila j, la'shontae heckard, and my angel lee michelle just to name a few tbh
but also remember that not every mixed kid comes out looking mixed perfectly with tanned skin and curly hair. some mixed kids
look more like one race and some look more like the others. take yoon mi rae for example, she is black and korean, but is very
korean passing. also take naomi campbell, she is jamaican and chinese, but almost looks exclusively black.
sincerely,
the mixed girl on aff who's tired of your
