How to find out if a fanfic has plagiarized a book.

With the increase of this practice in this website, I want to give out some tips I take on practice when I suspect of a fanfic. Of course that this is not 100% accurate - since there's original fanfiction works that fill out all of those - but my suspicions end up being right more than 90% of times if I follow these.

So, what things should you suspect about ?

1) Absolutely perfect grammar and punctuation.

I'm not saying that everyone here in this website is a dummy when it comes to grammar, because that's not true; but I got to admit that, since most of this website's fanfics tend to have current typos or simple and dumb grammar or vocabulary mistakes (often caused by direct translation to English from the author's native language), it tends to be a little bit weird when you find a fanfic that's, basically flawless.

2) Tons of western names... when the fanfic is based in South Korea, Japan and such.

This tends to be, to me, one of the major points that make me suspect. I understand that it's normal to have a foreigner in a fanfic, since we're a multicultural world nowadays. But 7, 8, 9, 10 western people ? In South Korea ? That tends to be a little suspicious, unless it was something based in Itaewon. But still... suspicious, and it makes you wonder if there's more than what the eye can see.

3) Sudden change of character's name.

This is the ONE that tends to give out everything. Imagine you just found this fanfic you love; the grammar is perfect, the storyline is amazing, and now, your favourite couple, is having in the most romantic way. And you get in the mood, and feel happy for them, and blush and... the girl screams some random western name when she reaches ?

And you suddenly go like,

"... Hold on. "

Plagiarizers tend to copy the original story word by word, and the only thing they do is changing the names. But what can give their façade away right away is when they... ups ! Forget to change one of the names.

4) New chapters are added by the speed of light.

Even if you're just a reader, I think you might have an idea of how long it can take to an author to type down 2,000 words. To me, it can take a pair of hours. So, doesn't it look reaaaally strange when a fanfic has like, 5 chapters published all of a sudden... everyday ? Unless that author has nothing to do or is a machine, both options are viable.

5) Most times, it tends to be that 'author's only story.

This is not always true, but it tends to be so. Those 'authors' who plagiarize published books tend to have that story as their only published fanfic.

So, after these, let's see what you can do.

What is my method to find out if a fanfic is plagiarized ?

Imagine that someone has plagiarized Sylvia Day's Aftershock and converted it in a TOPBOM fanfic.

Of course that the author in here would 'write' this:

When it came to playing games, my lover, Seung Hyun, was a master strategist. He pulled strings behind the closed doors of Seoul's most powerful political players and somehow still found time to nearly sideline my career. What he didn't know was that when I didn't like the rules, I threw them out and made my own. I wasn't going to let Seung Hyun get away with it. I wasn't going to let him get away at all.

I loved Seung Hyun enough that it was impossible to give up. Seung Hyun loved me enough that giving up was the only end he'd consider. He didn't think I could swim with the sharks. It was entirely my pleasure to show him that I'd already dived in.

But, obviously, the original was this:

When it came to playing games, my lover, Jax, was a master strategist. He pulled strings behind the closed doors of D.C.'s most powerful political players and somehow still found time to nearly sideline my career. What he didn't know was that when I didn't like the rules, I threw them out and made my own. I wasn't going to let Jax get away with it. I wasn't going to let him get away at all.

I loved Jax enough that it was impossible to give up. Jax loved me enough that giving up was the only end he'd consider. He didn't think I could swim with the sharks. It was entirely my pleasure to show him that I'd already dived in.

So, what to do ?

Well, my 'strategy' if you may call it so, is to copy and paste the longest part of text without any names you can find in the description in the Google search bar. If the author has copy and paste lock on the story, just write it down word by word. Example:

I copy the text in bold letters and paste it on Google search. As you can see, there's no personal or city names.

Result ?

The original book and author came to light.

What to do afterwards ?

Check out the author's stories. As I said before, those authors tend to only have that story in their 'authored fanfiction' directory. If that author has more than one story, don't be afraid to check the other stories out to see if they've been plagiarized as well.

In case the other stories are also plagiarized or the plagiarized story is the only one the author has, report it.

But there's those cases (it happened to a couple friends of mine here) in which the authors writes all of his/her fanfictions, but tries out adaptation... and plagiarizes. If that author is reported, that author will not only lose the plagiarized story (which is not his/hers to begin with), but also all of his/hers original stories.

In that case, try to speak to the author first. I tried to do it with a friend of mine but I unfortunately was too late, as she had already been reported. Fortunately, she learnt the lesson and now she's back and writing her own stuff again (you know who you are ;D). Normally the author will take th story down (delete it).

But in some cases, the author will be straightout rude to you or will deny plagiarizing.

You know what button I'm talking about ?

Report content.

I'm just going to say something now: TOPBOM readers, right now, there's a copyrighted book being published as an original fanfiction in the TOPBOM section. I'm not going to say author's name, the rating or whatever. I'm just saying, there's a book being plagiarized in there. Just for you to know how easily those things can go past you.

Maybe, if you take my 'advices' into use you'll know which story it is. But I'm not going to say anything else.

So, that's it for today. I hope this was useful :)

*facepalm* Seriously. T_T Plagiarism is like the dumbest thing to do. Ever. You are not just lying to others, but ultimately they are telling themselves that they should just give up on improving themselves. Nobody starts off as a great writer. You start off with having a great imagination. And then you learn how to put that imagination into work. I have edited a novel once where the story was great but the plot was amazing. (I actually got a literal nosebleed working on her work) A writer can't be called a writer when he or she plagiarizes and says "hey nothing is original anyway". That is not true. Because each one of us has a different take on situation and sometimes our life experiences (or lack of) changes the way we write. And vocabularies also range from poor to rich.
I think plagiarists lack self-confidence but tends to think that they can gain it by getting people to like them. (much like some people on SNS live off likes and drama) But ultimately, if it is accidental and the person is someone who likes to write, he or she just needs to write for writings sake. And not for upvotes, not for subscribers but to have the bugging plot out of their mind and have another one to take its place. ^^

You're right. Many people do that. I saw a proof for it. A bunch of dumb girls copied a KaiSoo's fanfic and adapted it into a 1Direction one. It was very stupid because you could see lots of sentences with. " Seul .. " " JongIn " and much more.
I'm not judging a person for doing that because she/he can be inspired by it but they should put more creativity on their fanfics.
I'm right now writting a fanfic based on a portuguese author and adapting it into a HunHan one-shot, but I use creativity and I don't copy EVERYTHING from it. Of course I have to put something of the story but it's still my creativity who does the rest. ;)
