AGAPE - Zhang Li Yin - a tribute to unconditional love

I was really looking forward to Li Yin new song :D But life was busy didn't check it out until today. And just seeing the first scene made me cry.

General Comments

Spoiler warning! The first scene is obviously a natural disaster, an earthquake showing a girl (Victoria if you can see) who is holding a child in her embrace. The new paper says something along the lines of mother saves child; child is found sleeping soundly. Then the scene pans to Tao. But that seriously has me crying

I do not have families in China's earthquake zone but to hear about stories no matter if it's the 2004 mega tsunami or the numerous earthquakes everywhere, or the Hurricane Katrina, it really saddens me to see how fate cruelly tears apart famlies. I know it's a fact of life but it doesn't make it hurt any less.

So my ability to read Chinese helped me understand the video pretty quickly...thus I cried the entire way through and I cried three times because I watched it three times. It took me the fourth time to stop crying. I think the video is too well done that it took away my focus on the lyrics.

Fangirl's Detailed Analysis - Victoria = Mom or Lover?

I'd like to say that the video is pretty obvious to me but people are still interpreting everything differently. I think this video is PURELY a mother and son video. Victoria as the mother-look-alike is just a catalyst...trigger? whatever the literary term is. She is like the "side" character as much as the dad is. I'm sure the dad is also very heartbroken over the death of his wife but he doesn't show up anywhere in the video. And it's really not a father-and-son video either.

Anyway, people are confused over Vic's dual roles and I can confirm for you all that Tao's mama did pass away in the earthquake. This is confirmed by the fact that the dad has flung her ashes to the ocean/river/over the cliff? with his kindergarten son holding onto his jacket. If you have watch Autumn Fairy Tale, it appears to be a Korean thing to cremate and then spray the ashes into the water; but don't take my word for it. So Vic is not his mom!

Now onto the evidence as to why this is about mother and son:

List of Evidence (Victoria as Mom)

  • The cellphone:
This is a very important piece of symbol this phone shows up in the beginning and the end and shows how resilient nokia is to withstand an earthquake and still be able to display text. In the first 0:12 second, you might notice a cell phone next to Vic covered in dust? That is the same cellphone that her husband later holds in his hand while he was holding a funeral showing a message. And this message was sent by Tao's mother while she was sheltering him under the rubble, which says "Sorry, I can no longer stay by your side. Thank you. I love you. And lastly, you must tell our son that his mother really...really loves him" This symbol showing up at the beginning and end is enough to show the theme is mother's love.

  • The chopsticks:
I did notice in the first scene Vic was holding on to something when the rescuers found her. During my second viewing, I noticed it was a pair of chopsticks. And the next scene shows Tao eating his ramyun in a downcast manner. It turns out he is kinda pausing and looking at his chopsticks, which triggers the flashback of him playing with the chopsticks while on his mother's lap. He sure remembers a lot about his mom if something as insignificant as chopsticks reminds him of her. Well I must say chopsticks reminds me of Chen XD when he pretend to be a walrus with them in EXO Showtime

  • The bandage:
After Tao protected Vic, and she was putting a bandage on the exact same spot the same way his mother did, Tao closed his eyes as if he was reminiscing about his gentle mother. And we get to see a flashback of his mom doting on him when he got hurt as a child

  • The pillow/bed:
The flashbacks just don't end, even when he's sleeping; the warmth and comfort reminds him of his mothers embrace. I can only diagnose that Tao is severely missing his mother even as a grown-up. I almost feel it's not quite healthy to be so down all the time...I can't imagine what his father is going through and why he's alone...but I guess seeing father and son bond over this tragedy will take away the tragic unconditional love between mother and son separated by death

  • Tao's stalkerish actions:
You must admit if we didn't now Vic and Tao's mom look alike, we might've found Tao's behaviour bordering on creepy stalker. He glances longingly at her through the window! But...

  • Tao's protectiveness:
Tao really does protect mom-look alike, he kicks the butts of bad guys hurting Vic and he gently fixes her necktie. I think there's a flaw in here because Vic was originally holding tray between him and her and then all of a sudden, Tao fixes her necktie and the tray is gone? O.O I was a bit confused over that. But Vic seems to be shy while Tao is a bit stoic. My interpretation is not that they are dating but I think Vic might start crushing on Tao because maybe she mistakes his tenderness towards her as something more. But I feel like this is just Tao projecting his mother in Vic. Because Vic looks like his mother, he can practically see his mother in her and naturally brings out his filial instincts. But he is clearly VERY hung over his mother

  • Tao's tears:
One of the first scenes includes a photograph showing his family picture and a white flower placed at the table. White is colour of death in Chinese culture that's why people wear white rather than black. Tao was crying at that time. Next scene is when he was at the river. I haven't figure out why he's at the river but maybe it has to do with the fact that her ashes were sprayed over some body of water and he feels closer to her that way. But there was a scene where he was leaning over a ledge shouting for Mama, if you can read lips, that's clearly what he's yelling for. And at the very end, he had teary eyes while looking out into the river. His grieving and yearning is not over and still very intense. Vic being her look-alike probably intensified it. Thus this overrides the theory at least for me, that Vic and Tao mutually like each other. How can Tao like Vic if he's so emotionally tied up over the death of his mom and yearning for her to the point that he's in tears?

  • Tao's multiple pictures of his mom:
He has a polaroid picture that reminds him of when he kissed his mom on the beach. He has one of his family and one of just his mother by the table that Vic eventually looks at. When Tao realizes Vic saw the picture, he just hides the photograph behind his back and he looked down and eventually looked away from Vic. Now that's not how I'd expect someone who likes Vic to act; he would've started talking about who this person is and clarified any confusion she has. Vic is clearly confused and I think she left because she might not have known his mom passed away and she was likely feeling weird over the likeliness between her and his mom and trying to figure out what that means.

  • The lyrics' content (and these are written by Li Yin!):
I will try to translate clearly as possible but this is like the mother's words to comfort her song that she will be with him in spirit day and night, and that she will forever love him. Agape is adapted from Greek to mean unconditional love. Simply going by the song's subject matter, it's not about the love between Tao's mom's look-alike and Tao since it's too early to be unconditional. But a mother's love is (usually but there are some unfortunate circumstances) unconditional.

Looking at love growing into a sea drop by drop
Looking at the sea flowing into the future day by day
I will tell you good morning each day
I also will kindle love at night
I have never left, oh love
No matter how many obstacles and helplessness are experienced
Do not fear waiting for what is lost
Kissing my love
Remember love's soliloquy
The farther the distance will let you see true love
Happiness is your dependence within my embrace
The helplessness of breathing ceased after closing eyes
Waking from a dream, remember how I hug you in my embrace
Accompanying you warmly loving you
I have never left, oh love
No matter how many obstacles and helplessness are experienced
Do not fear waiting for what is lost
Kissing my love
Remember love's soliloquy
The farther the distance will let you see true love
Oh the shattered bits of pain cannot bury love in any way
When we can meet again
I have never left, oh love
No matter how many obstacles and helplessness experienced
Do not fear waiting for what is lost
Kissing my love
Remember love's soliloquy
The farther the distance will let you see true love
Let you believe in the future we will be together
Always as though we have never been apart
Kissing my love
Remember love's soliloquy
I love you till forever, never apart

This there ends my analysis of this song. But who know, if there is a part II maybe Vic will help Tao get farther and understand love even more. Tao's character seems to still be in the grieving stage and not yet moving on. Anyway, I await for the live stage from Li Yin! PS. I saw Chen's message for Li Yin, awwwwwwwwww.
