Yumi grows a lot, when she was younger she was teased a little for her height and size (tall and lanky), she was insecure about her looks and would be teased for being a tomboy. Slowly, she grew to be confident, and stopped listening to those that bullied or . Although she's still a little insecure about her looks, she still finds the confidence to become an idol. Yumi tries to keep her word and is very loyal to those that she trusts. Yumi is very ambitious, she was a trainee since she was 14, and now at 21, it's been 7 long years of training. And the thought of giving up had passed through Yumi's mind a few times but she decided against it, she wanted to show her family, mainly her father that she could amount to something as an idol, and that she could change the world with music.

background » Yumi was born in Seoul, South Korea to a Korean father and a Japanese mother. They lived in their newly built home, that Yumi's mother had designed months before finding out she was pregnant, and was built during the months leading up to her birth. When Yumi was 4, her younger sister, Yueun, was born. The two roomed together until Yumi was 6, and then she was placed into her own room. Yumi was never a girly-girl. She rathered overalls over dresses and shorts over skirts. Her parents allowed her to pick out most of her clothes even at a young age, as long as it was in her size.

When Yumi was 9 she begged her parents to let her enter singing lessons, from watching TV and seeing idols perform, she wanted to be one too. It took a while for Yumi's father to agree to the lessons, as he wanted his daughter to amount to something more than an idol, but it didn't take much for Yumi's mother to allow the lessons, as when she was young, she wanted to be a singer also. Yumi entered the lessons, twice a week she'd take them. Yumi was told, at first that her voice was strong but a little shaky. With the lessons her voice became stronger and solid.

Since a young age, Yumi had always been a tall and slender child. She found herself being made of because of t his, she would be called 'Long limbed' because of her long legs and arms. Slowly Yumi grew to ignore the teasing and it stopped. Yumi kept attending singing lessons from when she was 9, to when she was 14. She told her mother that she wanted to be an idol, at 12, not to just sing on stage in pretty clothes, but to also show that other's like her can too. She wasn't always the 'ideal' beauty, although her eyes were large and her skin milky, she had a crooked smile that she was once insecure about, and grew to find attractive in her own way. At 14, Yumi auditioned for JYP Entertainment. Although she didn't get in, they gave her an audition card for Vista Entertainment, a company that worked under JYPE. Yumi gladly went to audition for VistE and became a trainee that year. Because of the fact her mother is Japanese, Yumi was taught how to read, write and speak Japanese for years, although she doesn't use the skill very often because most of her mother's family moved to South Korea, and as such speak Korean, she still uses it to speak to Japanese trainees and teachers.

Through training, and a lot of practice, her voice became stronger and her skills in dancing, that she didn't have to start with, grew. Years of practice and training has made her what she is now. 7 years as a trainee has made Yumi hard-working and confident in her skills and talent.

When they were children, they didn't get along as well, but as they got older they became closer. They go shopping and hang out when Yumi isn't training.

love story »  When JYP Entertainment held a family party, all those in companies that worked with JYPE, met and this is where Yumi and Seokjin met. They got to know each other before Yumi had to return home. They two kept in touch by trading phone numbers and texted each other daily.
