Does anyone (especially to my graphic designing friends) know other softwares besides photoshop which can be used to make really good graphic posters?

I wanna give a try at graphics.

It seems fun so I wanna try ^^

I found this software called GIMP. Does this cost anything? Like do you have to pay for it???
