Poem: Society^^
Society
It began swiftly, delicately, an old
Man whispered a few last words to his wife
A few treasures
Scattered: here, there; everywhere
And she sobbed as his heart faltered,
He closed his wrinkled eyes for the final time.
She laughed till her lungs burst.
“To the beach!” She screamed to her
Friends, enemy of man, the victims of golden lovely
Chocolate; they wanted it all. Sailing quick
On the ship, nipped their toes into the water and
As they stepped on the sand.
Sunk straight through
So the legend goes.
“Hated her!” He drank till his blood wasn’t blood,
Only a stream, a river of alcohol: poison
His heart a mess, his brain mashed potatoes,
Everything in, sponge of a man.
Like a flame he burst into purple and coughed
Fell to the ground, shrieking, spluttering
No one helped.
“I helped!” The Asian lied, his face in a smirk. His
Shirt creased in ruby, a dog-like cut dancing on
His head. He clapped and was given gold, diamonds
The praise of society couldn’t please him.
He wanted a girl, married, cheated, divorced
Married, cheated, divorced
Till he died one night, alone, crying.
“A monster” she closed her eyes and felt
At her stomach as the baby churned.
Threw up at the funeral, cried like a baby
As her baby came into the world.
Life, she realised, was a and she smiled
Whilst the secret light shined in her eyes
Flat line. Bye bye.
“A mother” they said, holding hands hard, staring
Into the fire, burning with desire, their veins
Racing. The baby wept in their arms: lonely,
Mother? No mother. No one
But they kept her like a cat, ignored, treated
Like a god, till she grew up
And was squashed like a bug.
Old, he watched her die, watched her leave.
Alone, he sat, “goodbye my love
See you soon, my love, my love, my love”
Till a fresh-face threw herself in his life
A new found joy behind the darkness of
Money, money alone and he knew she would
So sent her to her death.
