☓ PERSONALITY  
                       At first glance, Mei comes off as someone with an aura of a strong and mysterious girl that you would not want to mess with at any given day. She gives off an intimidating, unfriendly vibe, thus making her a "fierce" type of girl. Her bluntness with words and unconscious insults make her less approachable than she already is (or is not). Her looks would make you think that she was born to be a rock star instead of a pop singer, much less a rapper.

                       In truth, however, she, in the words of her friends, is a "seven-year-old in an eighteen-year-old body"; her expressions and mannerisms when she is relaxed reflects off a childish streak, always making weird noises in different child-like voices and puffing her cheeks like a small child with a tantrum. Always curious, Mei sticks her nose into everything that she could learn about, be it a new skill or a new knowledge or even something menial, but once she gets bored, she will definitely leave that activity hanging, never looking back, and will find another thing to do. She is easily pleased and has a shallow sense of humor, usually the only person left who would still be laughing even at corny jokes. Some may say that she is also a pushover and easily bribed with food but she does know her virtues and will adhere to them at any time of the day; however, she really does tend to help others way too much. Mei is also rather easygoing and the type of person to "go with the flow". Towards work and towards the problems of other people, she is radiantly optimistic. Independence and freedom is something that she cherishes greatly, thus making her seem a bit proud for wanting to solve things on her own and her inability to ask for help unless it is the only choice left. However, she is also responsible and reliable, and once Mei gives her word, she will never break her promise.

                              Thoughtful and considerate, Mei tends to spoil her friends (actually bribing them with food. . .) and is the person you can rely on when you need a shoulder to cry on, a person who can help you in times of need or if you just need an ear to hear you out without being judged. Because she knows the feeling of being alone and unwanted, anytime she sees someone in the same predicament, she will never hesitate to keep them company or extend a helping hand. Irritation and anger is not something that Mei would display rather easily, as she likes maintaining a good rapport. She lets most things that would offend her slide, as she would not want any trouble, but once she feels as if her dignity, her family or her friends are endangered, in any way possible, she willingly becomes a little more than merciless. Towards people that she cares about, she would always put them ahead of her and is eternally loyal to them, but to her enemies, she lets out quite a lot of sass and "superiority" displays. In private, of course. Mei is very protective of her friends and family, to the extent that she willingly decides to do things that can be potentially nerve-wracking just so she can protect the ones she care about from those kinds of situations. Family is the most important thing to Mei, and she is rather attached to them. To her younger cousins, she is both their older sister and their somewhat surrogate mother; to her aunts and uncles, she is their adorable niece and almost-daughter; to her parents, she is their precious princess and beloved little baby, and to her brother, she is his best friend and closest confidant.

                               Many of her "perceived" personality points are mostly misunderstandings between how she looks (she really does give off the "hardcore" vibes with how she dresses and moves) and how she really is. Mei is socially "impaired" (so to say) and is shy around new people, thus making her hesitant towards talking to new people. Her awkwardness doesn't mix well with her strong appearance, thus leading to her "snobbishness" and unconscious insults, well in fact she is a huge bag of emotions and nervous episodes. A lot of things can make her cry, and all for different reasons — she will cry when she is happy and she will cry if she is angered to the point of doing so. 

                               Because of the events of her middle school days that she would really like to forget, Mei has large insecurities about herself, particularly doing the wrong or stupid thing and being noticed for how she looks or acts. While she does hide this side of her really well, sometimes it shows through her apprehensions about making decisions — as she can't make decisions on her own and would always ask others first — and how she avoids being seen as a "mistake" or a "failure" by being a perfectionist and always, always guarding her actions and words to a T. Her self-destructiveness — in the form of deliberate excessive training and self-sacrificing to dangerous lengths — is something that she also copes up with. Due to her protectiveness of her friends and family's happiness, she became very secretive of her own emotions and feelings, to the point that she can hide away her insecurities and anxieties and deal with them herself, a side-effect of her independence as well. It is established that the people around her, even her friends and family, do not know her as she wholly is — she makes them "see" her in bits and pieces. That's why she claims that no one knows her fully, and despite the loneliness of that, she is happier that all they see are the positive parts of her despite her outward appearance. 

                               She is very hesitant about the prospect of romantic love. Because of her parents' separation, she is very wary about romance and would actually prefer not thinking about it, and in her opinion, she would rather not fall in love than face the same heartbreak that she has seen her mother get into. While she does not hate her father (she could never hate him), she does try to learn from their mistakes and makes sure that, when she loves, she will only love someone who is completely loyal and true

☓ BACKGROUND  
                               Almost fifteen years ago, Mei's parents had a divorce after her mother learned of her father's mistress, who had a child with her father that was actually older than Mi Young. While her father explained that it was a drunken one-night stand and that he didn't want to abandon his responsibilities to his son as much as he didn't want to abandon his wife and daughter, their divorce still pushed through. Mi Young was left with her mother at the request of her father, who knew that her mother would need someone to be with through her depressive periods following the discovery. However, she and her father still kept in touch. Three years after the divorce, Mi Young's mother died of a car accident, and Mi Young's custody went to her father. Despite what telenovelas would tell you, her new mother was actually very nice and welcoming to her, and she also quickly became friends with her half-brother, Shin Joon Hyun. Elementary days were also a breeze for her, as she found herself two best friends — namely Lee Tae Min (during her second year of elementary)and Kim Jong In (during her last) — and displayed a natural knack for being a class leader and role model.

                               That exact behavior was what made her a target for bullies during junior high. Branded as the "no-good tattletale", she would constantly be pushed around and her bike would always be messed with, to the point that she never took it to school again and that she was always paranoid of people around her, not knowing when the bullies would strike. As she tried to take some measure of control, joining the Taekwondo club as the movements enamored her (as they resembled a dance), and also in order to learn how to protect herself (but never saying the reason why), the bullying increased, the "no-good tattletale" later evolving to "coward" (for her decision to learn how to protect herself), "failure" (after she accidentally made her class lose a school festival contest), and a whole lot of other derogatory names. She became reclusive and unwilling to make friends, later evolving into shyness and social impairment. While her brother was aware of what was happening to her, she decided to keep it a secret from her parents and her two best friends, as she did not want them to worry and that she wished to handle her problems on her own. Despite her miserable junior high school life, however, she did find solace in Taekwondo, and it would always be her grip on her confidence, especially when she saw the look on her coach's face — one of pride and respect for his prized student and protege.

                                Things changed for the better when she entered high school. Unknowingly, she had became famous with her high school's Taekwondo team for being a promising talent during her middle school days. The martial arts that was once just a way for her to deal with her problems became something that is very precious to her and what made her mature. She joined the club, sometimes tagging along with her teammates who were dancers as well and had connections with some dancers from different schools and years. Later on when EXO had debuted, Taemin and Kai encouraged her to audition for SM the first chance she got. Initially unwilling due to her uncharacteristic shyness, she later pushed through when they persuaded her enough, and because she had started to miss being with them dearly.

Xiumin finds her nickname of him as weird (Frosty-oppa. . . very weird indeed) but she reasons out that since his "power" is frost, and he kinda looks like a snowman, it fits him very much.

                            ; ; — Taemin, Kai and Mei are sometimes collectively called as the “Dancing Trio” because they're all great dancers. Taemin and Kai are Mei's inspirations for getting better as well, and she dreams that someday, the three of them can perform on-stage together and maybe dance like three little hypercrazed dancing maniacs. The two knew of her personality change and her problems when she got in SM (mostly due to them contacting her brother) but despite that, they still saw the curious, lively and emotional Mi Young in her, thus, the two of them would sometimes check up on her to make sure that she either doesn't become "unconsciously antisocial" or she isn't practicing to the point of excessiveness.

                       Mei was immediately gravitated towards training her dancing more as it was her forte, reinforced by her martial arts skills. She would regularly train with her two best friends and "brothers", Taemin and Jongin (Kai), to the point that Kai was like her second (and bossier) dance trainer, something that Taemin regularly controlled but she was otherwise okay with his bossiness. Singing wasn't her best skill at first as she could not project her voice properly and that took a while to be developed, but she did find a nice predisposition with rapping. During training, she usually was the type of person that would take in the comments on her performance to herself and would practice alone as she both initially repelled off people (without meaning to) and because she didn't have the confidence to approach anyone. It wasn't until later, with the help of her best friends' encouragement, that she managed to work with others and actually made some friends on her own. In between training, she would insert her multitude of hobbies (normally it would be running around to expand her stamina and endurance better).

                       Mei constantly bullies Kris because she feels as if she has to, not knowing that this is actually a manifestation of her unrecognized crush towards the EXO-M leader and her lack of knowledge on how to deal with that kind of affection. She seems as if she is constantly annoyed even by Kris just hanging about, and her persistent problem is his height (being that she looks even smaller standing next to him. . .) and the fact that he will not conceal his laughter when she has English lapses. Everyone else pretty much is amused by the fact that Mei's crush on him is so obvious, and that a tall guy like Kris is being bullied by a short girl like Mei (she really isn't actually short. . .). Despite being "annoyed" at Kris for the most part, she actually unconsciously shows him the kinder part of herself and is comfortable with opening up to him — a rare case as she is a very independent and secretive person, even towards her family. 

                               They first met when Mei was a newbie in SM, during which Taemin and Kai would visit her to make sure that she's actually talking to people and not just hanging around a random corner being "antisocial". When Taemin isn't around, she tends to tag along with Kai, thus eventually leading her to be acquainted with Kris. The first few words she said to Kris was "I feel even smaller because of his height. What was he in the past life, a lamp post?" and that elicited laughter from everyone. It was later on that he would really get to know her when she was wandering around alone after training, and they bumped into each other. Despite being branded as the unapproachable and snobbish girl, he figured out that she was just a bit shy and didn't know how to approach people. Since then, Mei had someone (aside from Taeminnie and Jonginnie) that she can talk to without feeling nervous or awkward. It wasn't long before Kris was teasing her about her English and she began feeling annoyed (but not in a really bad way) everytime he was near because he grabs her attention all the tim. She reasons that he's so tall, that's why he's an eyesore, but even the mention of his name gets her attention. Fully.

                                Usually he is at the receiving end of all her physical "torture" whenever he teases her (she tends to punch him everytime she is flustered around him). At first, he didn't understand what her hate towards him was all about, but it didn't take long for him to realize what was up since her crush was so painstakingly obvious, except for her. Fans that have anime knowledge sometimes call her a "tsundere", which she will also refute.

                     Her relationship with Taemin is undoubtly better when compared to how she treats Kris. Because Taemin has known her before her personality changed and because he still saw the old Mi Young in her, Mei is very attached to Taemin like a younger sister. Likewise, Taemin treats himself like an older brother to Mei, and would constantly point out that Mei has a crush on Kris (she almost always disagrees). Whenever Kris laughs at her slightly-broken English (it isn't that bad, really) or when she just really gets one of her "annoyed" moods, it is almost always certain that she will run to Taemin first (if he is around). Unconsciously, Kris is somewhat jealous of this obviously-close relationship, especially since Mei is very touchy-feely with Taemin (often jumping him or hitting him playfully) but kinda hard on Kris (her punches look awesome but hurts when you're the receiver).

                     Somehow, Mei feels guilty that she wasn't around when Taemin was being bullied in high school (as they studied in different schools), so now she feels as if she has to protect her oppa's innocence. Likewise, Taemin feels as if it is his responsibility, as the "older brother" to look after Mei while she is still inwardly struggling with her own problems.
