My Life

History:

After giving birth to her two younger siblings–the twins KwangMin & JaeMin–SaeRin’s mother left her family. At that time SaeRin had just recently turned 5 years old and the only memory she held of her mother walking away from her and her older brother, YoonJae. The only thing she remembered about her mother was that she had beautiful golden brown hair which rolled down like the warm waves of gold that the fields looked like around harvest time. That was why when she took a job she decided to be a harvester, so that she could see the color of her mother’s hair every year that time came around. YoonJae was the only one who remembered what their mother was like, but he refused to talk to his younger siblings about it. [Turns out that SaeRin’s mother was a rebel and she left because her family was threatened by the Capitol if she didn’t turn herself.]

When she was 14-years-old she lost a friend and an admirer to the Hunger Games. One of her best friends, Kim ChangHyun, was a sickly child. He was diagnosed with asthma when he was younger and knew that he would never survive the Hunger Games in his condition. Before he left, he made sure to reveal to SaeRin that he had feelings for her and that he didn’t want her to be depressed on his death and to forget about him. This, despite how he wished it not to, left a scar on her heart since she had to watch him fight only to die from an asthma attack after being chased down as one of the last four tributes.

Personality:

SaeRin is a soft-spoken girl. She has been like that ever since her father’s death when she was 7-years-old. She could’ve cared less about that abusive drunkard of a father. However; what she did care about and hated to see was 15-year-old YoonJae on his knees begging the peacekeepers not to separate their family. Those peacekeepers, or at least the way she remembered, beat him up to a bloody pulp before announcing that he could keep his family together only if he took on three different jobs and took tesserae every year since he was legible for the Hunger Games at that age. She’s only quiet because she is afraid to be hurt by the peacekeepers, or worse, killed because of speaking out, but only when it was against the capitol and those in charge.

SaeRin is fearless when it comes to standing up for others. The first time she stood up for someone else, she ended up with an ugly scar on her face. When she was 10 years old, SaeRin found 10-year-old Kim ChangHyun at the center of a circle of bullies. The bullies were at least three years older and twice their size, but it didn’t matter to her when she stepped between them and the weaker child, ChangHyun. What she hadn’t expected then was a boy to have a pocketknife. That knife was what cut into her skin, dragged from her left temple down to her collar bone and stabbed into her left eye because the older boys thought it was “fun.” DaeHyuk was the one who stepped in, chasing the older kids away after kicking one down and beating him up. He was also 12-years-old then and got the two of them the medical help they needed since his mother was a nurse and his father was a doctor. Even after this incident, SaeRin never stopped standing up for whatever she felt was the right thing.

SaeRin cares too much about her family and friends and works too hard. The only people she can’t stand to see in pain are her siblings and her friends. When she saw how three jobs took a toll on her brother’s body, SaeRin jumped in and took two jobs of her own to help support their family. She works as a Harvester and a Plower so that she can spend more time with YoonJae. She even takes tesserae now that her brother is illegible for the Hunger Games since he is past eighteen years of age and because she doesn't want her younger siblings to be taking any. When DaeHyuk’s little sister, InSuk, was sick once, she carried little InSuk to the hospital, which was at least three miles away, when the teachers refused to let her leave class. She would do anything in her power to do anything for her friends and family. That was why she was so angry at herself and felt so extremely powerless when ChangHyun had been reaped for the Hunger Games when they were 14 years old.

SaeRin is a very thoughtful person and takes almost everything to heart. She looks deeply into the things she does and what other people do. Every gift she gives she works hard on before giving. Every gift she receives, she thinks too deeply behind the meaning of. That’s why she wears so many rings on her fingers. She wears about 3 rings on her fingers and another 4 around her neck on a silver chain. The silver ring on her right index finger, which had symbols of the four seasons welded into it, was her once her mother’s, it was given to her when her mother left them. The golden band on her left middle finger, was a birthday gift from YoonJae on her 8^th birthday; it had been given to her late, but she treasured it so much because it had the names of her siblings engraved on them and he had put so much money into it since he had started working so much and couldn’t spend so much time with them. The silver ring, which looked like vines with thorns, on her left pinky was the ring ChangHyun gave to her before he left for the Capitol once he was chosen for the Hunger Games. It kept her going through the hardest times, but it was also a sad reminder to her that ChangHyun loved her since he gave it to her as a confession before he left.

Their My Life

Romance: Has liked her childhood friend Ahn DaeHyuk ever since he saved her life against the large bullying accident. He and her family is the only thing that is keeping her brave and strong. In the interviews SaeRin steered clear of the love life questions since she didn't want DaeHyuk to find out about her feelings through the Hunger Games and would rather not speak about ChangHyun who was also a former, dead tribute. She wants to win so that she can tell him herself and apologize to ChangHyun at his grave. SaeRin doesn't want DaeHyuk to be burdened by her feelings if she dies in the Games. She will die with the secret burdening her heart if that is how it is. However, what she doesn't know is that YoonJae and InSu both know of her feelings for DaeHyuk.

Family's Reaction: YoonJae charged at the barricade of Peacekeepers in his anger, hitting one and knocking them out in the process. He was taken away and beat again like when he was 15. KwangMin held a sobbing JaeMin in his arms while he himself was crying. The two younger siblings didn't dare to call out, afraid to be taken away like their older brother.

How do you act during the interview: Rin tries her best to look confident but deep down she's cowering at the sights of the other tributes. She knows that she can't look afraid or else she'll be the first target of the others. She needed to look tough and that's what she did: she made herself look tough. Sometimes on questions her mind blanks out, but she is thankfully saved by her fellow tribute. When Rin stumbles over her words everyone else laughs it off as if she's telling a joke. During the interview, Rin had a habit of spinning the rings on her fingers, especially so on questions about her love life since she doesn't want DaeHyuk to find out through the Hunger Games only that she loved him. She didn't want him to know if she died there. Rin wanted to be the one to tell him herself.
