Part 2: Was the site down yesterday? [User data collected, etc.]
Thanks for replying in my previous post. Ever since the Great AFF 2012 crash, I became more observant. Little problems accumulate if ignored and then it would be too late.
I went to twitter and the tweets about the site being down started at 4:01PM, April 7, 2014 GMT+8. Here is the status history of AFF yesterday: http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/asianfanfics.com.html. It did went offline at 2:25AM (GMT-7). But for how long, it's different for everyone. Based on the time stamps of the tweets, the site was down from four to six hours and then we have other users claiming it was only for a short time.
I don't trust the countries they listed in their profiles but I recognized the languages used, haha, Bahasa, Filipino and then most are in English. But I think it would help boss if we give him a list of the areas affected. So far, users who experienced problems are from the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, USA (states: California, North Dakota), China, Spain, UK, Australia... I informed AFFHelper with this list but will update them later if you want to add your country to the list.
I went to Cloudflare to understand more (Did you see the error message from Cloudflare yesterday?) when I stumbled upon their most recent blog post: Staying ahead of OpenSSL vulnerabilities by Nick Sullivan. It was published yesterday April 7, 2014, 11:00AM.
"We fixed this vulnerability last week before it was made public. All sites that use CloudFlare for SSL have received this fix and are automatically protected."
I am not saying that what happened yesterday is connected with this bug fix or vulnerability fix. Let's just hope that whatever it is, it's fixed. And don't ask me about that article because I don't know a thing.
And oh, I saw one user in twitter complaining that AFF should have an app. So I would like to remind everyone that developing an app is not easy. And it's definitely not cheap like I've shown in an old post. Do you have at least twenty thousand dollars? Hmp! It not the site's fault it went offline yesterday. Or anyone's. While Cloudflare makes sure the site is protected, their system is not perfect. Glitches or bugs happen. Hackers exist.
This is the reason why I don't go to twitter anymore. I feel like I am so old when I read tweets from whiny users. My three year old neighbor is better in handling her emotions than most of them.
