The Case of the Vanishing Threads and Posts

Apparently, some users mysteriously lost their threads/stories and posts. But don't panic, we don't have proof to believe that our site is under attack.

Go to your Profile and check if your thread is reported for violating our Terms of Use.

"If you have had a report filed against you, you can access them on your profile (Other > Reports). If the report has been closed, you may not be able to reply, but as we work closely with the Moderators, we can communicate with them and see if anything can be done." - AFFHelper FAQ

If there is none, then the moderators didn't remove it. And if you didn't accidentally delete it, who did? Our stories are password protected. So even if you left your computer while logged in AFF, people can't delete your thread.

Just putting this up again:

Keeper: Is it possible for other users to hack and steal karma pts?

Boss Nichiren: As far as I know, they'd only be able to do that if they've managed to also steal their account in which case, they'd also have to know the user's password. It's not easy to do that (or else MY account would've been hacked already and I'd be the prime target) but there are a few ways which is why people should always use strong passwords.

Also in our Privacy Policy:

6. Security We follow generally accepted industry standards to protect the personal information submitted to us, both during transmission and once we receive it. No method of transmission over the Internet, or method of electronic storage, is 100% secure, however. Therefore, while we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.

If you think your account is compromised, change the password of the email you used to register here in AFF and use a strong one. Then change your AFF password. Report this to a moderator.

However, they won't be able to help you in getting back your deleted thread.

How do I retrieve deleted content (i.e. stories, conversations, blog posts, etc)? "Unfortunately, when a user deletes anything on the site, for security reasons neither the site admin nor Helpers have access to the content. This means that once content is deleted, it cannot be retrieved. We recommend always saving your posts elsewhere; accidental deletions are known to happen!" AFFHelper FAQ

REMINDERS:

  • Save your codes in pastebin or in notepad, I use notepad2.
  • Save your stories in your computer, email, google drive.
  • Do not give away your password.
  • Do not click mysterious links sent to your email inbox. Once you do, the hacker can retrieve your IP add and control your computer, access your accounts, etc. This is why you shouldn't broadcast your accounts here.
  • Do not leave your gadgets unattended.
  • Always log off and clear browser cache.
  • Scan your computer.
  • When downloading a free software, read the terms of use or license before ticking the "I accept" option. Free softwares also come with another software or worse, a malware - which "can disrupt computer operation, gather sensitive information, or gain access to private computer systems."

But not everyone who claimed to lose their accounts were hacked. I reported users who claimed that their accounts have been hacked, only for the moderator to find out that the hacker and the victim share the same IP address. They confessed they did it just to get karma points. So beware of that as well.

So stay alert and be calm.

- Keeper

Hmm...
Then I don't know... My phone was unattended.
But I don't think anyone in my family would know my
password unless they had my iPad (which stored all
my passwords to accounts) and I had the iPad...
Maybe it was just a dirty joke from my sisters? *confuzzled*

Oh my. It's a good thing I started typing my stories in microsoft word instead of just posting them on here ^^; I hope it won't be another thing like what happened around 2012. No matter if you're an old user or not, it's good to be reminded of these things ^^
