Simon and Martina's view on how the internet works

Simon and Martina retweeted this post. See for yourself what their opinion is on how the internet works.

I guess, linking her tweet in this blog is an example noh? Because she posted it online, I can share it and add my opinions about it and she has no right to complain. This is how internet works.

Okay, that was very mean of me. But really just because a fic is posted online and can be accessed freely doesn't automatically mean we can do anything with it. Where is the respect for someone's creative work? Using fanfics as content for a video without permission is wrong.

Why did S&M agree with it?

And an aff author has posted in her blog not to link any of her fics and yet one of her readers did. I saw one reply to EYK's tweet with a link to an aff fic. People. SMH. I already informed the aff author about it. So no need to do anything.

However, simon and Martina at least told fans... If you saw other youtubers...
I find there no reason for everyone to be upset. Although they dislike people using their videos on TV because people make money out of it without crediting or informing, at least they have the courtersy to ask the author
And also, YouTube can remove their video if any of the authors complain regarding simon and Martina doing anything to their story.^^
But they are just doing their job. They are still human beings. People should not be critising them like as if they just nuclear bombed earth.

So many people are like "oh I can do better than them" but they do not have any idea how hard it is to do these kind of videos. Retake after retake, editing, planning... It's not eas...

I seriously think that you are right...
On what basis are we going to think that EYK will really keep their promise of asking the author?
They can explicitly said they asked...but in reality...no one knows...maybe until the video is out and the author finds out and everything is too late...

If the author posted that she doesn't want to recommend her fanfics....whether EYK ask for permission has become NOT OF IMPORTANCE....readers and recommenders SHOULD RESPECT the author's rights...
If these people don't know how to respect a person's rights and requests...then I think these people are a seriously having comprehension problems...which maybe they should do something about it....

Keeper, don't you think you're being a little bit biased in your post? I thought S&M already put out a post where they explicitly stated that they wouldn't use an author's story without permission. I understand that you and everyone else (and me included) in the fanfic community are defensive about using fanfics in S&M's videos (especially some incidents in the past concerning the "bashing" of idols), but you know, maybe they won't portray them negatively in the video? I think that we're just jumping to conclusions too fast.

What with all the crazy bashing S&M receives on the internet and tumblr- justified or not- I kinda think that their reblog post was justified. The few authors and AFF users I follow on tumblr have already sent out mass posts about how awful S&M are with their videos and how they're going to humiliate the entire fanfic community with their video. I don't think any of them actually saw the tweet about asking permission, tbh. They just blindly reblogged the original tweet, which is a bit unfair to S&M. It's like only showing one side of the story, and a biased one at that.

Not that I'm on the fanfic's community side of S&M's side, but I think that we need to keep an open mind about S&M. There's nothing in S&M's intent to discuss fanfiction that would lend to a negative portrayal, yet. But I don't know. I really, really don't know. Ugh, this whole situation is stressing me out XD I don't want author's stories to be taken w/o permission because that would be... mortifying, to say the least. But the necessary bashing of S&M needs to stop. So... torn....

Fanfic community: be at ease. We won't use anyone's fanfics without the author's permission. Fair? :)

And this was posted BEFORE the freaking retweet
Wow Keeper. I'm extremely disappointed with you right now.

Look, once something is published online, it's up for whoever reads it. This is why AFF got into legal issues in the past for underage kids reading fan fics...people plagiarize on this site, it's frowned upon yes, but that's the downside of the internet. So a few authors get their stories ripped apart by Simon and Martina...they're only two people in the world! Sure they have a ton of subscribers on youtube...but not everyone is going to watch it. People just need to get over the fact that they are not the greatest writers in the universe. If my readers suggest my fan fics, I'm not going to get hurt if they tear my fan fics to pulverized bits. They probably won't be saying anything that's not new to me. I highly doubt my fan fics will be recommended because I have less than 100 subbies, and I write SHINee fan fics only. No EXO, MBlaq, or any of the other numerous Kpop groups out there.

It's the internet, once it up, its fair game for whoever reads it to critique it. Do directors, actors/actresses, and mainstream authors stop producing their work because of bad criticism? No. They grow from it, and move on. People need to do the same here.

Well...no, once something is published online, as long as it's within the legal rights of the author, anyone can access it...now whether it SHOULD be used for something like that is in question. As much as I don't like EYK, they're quite within their right to critique someone's work. It feels more personal because it's toward fanfic writers. And if they make fun of them, they're complete buttholes at that point and deserve no respect, but they can refer to anything they want in their videos. It's fair use. They don't actually need the permission of the author to talk about their writings, unless doing so violates the copyright and other rights of the author. It's like movie and book reviews; if author permission needs to be requested, what's to say the author says no, all because they don't want negative criticism of their work?

It's mean-spirited and nasty, especially if they're doing it to poke fun at fanfic writers, but nah, they CAN do it. Should they? No, not really lmao

I think I understand what's going on here. If the author does not want his/her fics to be retweeted or advertised then people; Respect the authors wishes. I'm glad it's settled though, hopefully users won't go on a rampage about this.
