The first impression one gets of Claire Sooyeon Newby is that she must be a nice person. She has a lot of friends and is always talking to them in person, on the phone, or texting them, or messaging them, or Kakao-ing them, or Line-ing them. She's an optimistic ambivert, which is pretty much an ideal combination for making friends. Claire's rather quiet, but because she can get recharged by people and by herself, she makes a good friend. Claire likes looking on the bright side no matter how hard things get; she's unflappably optimistic, to the point where it's a fault. Claire is the kind of person you can go to when you're feeling down, because she's got a calm and happy air about her. She's also very enthusiastic, especially now since she's debuting; she's been in the company since its humble beginnings, witnessed some of her friends debut, and now, it's her time to shine. She has no jealousy towards them (unlike SOME people who have been training for a long time...), though. A friend is a friend, and she wishes them the best. In general, Claire tries to see the best in people, even if that means looking for good where there is none.
Claire is a musician. She likes to say she thinks in C Major. Growing up with parent's like Claire's, it's hard not to have an interest in music, but even if her birth mother had stayed with her, she'd still probably have become a trainee. Claire loves to make music - she doesn't play any instruments, but she knows how to produce music - and has a good ear for everything that goes into it. She'll listen to a song and hear the synth, drums, triangle, bongos, vocals, and guitar. She also has perfect pitch - also probably a side effect of growing up in a musical family. Her immense knowledge of music makes Claire a bit of a snob; if you're singing a song in the wrong key, she'll comment on it, and if you're sharp or flat, she'll visibly wince. It's annoying for both parties; Claire's obsessive brain goes "SOMETHING'S WRONG", and then the other person's brain goes "Seriously?" Her musical knowledge is a blessing and a curse.
Speaking of obsessive, Claire is just that. She's got to have everything on her half of the dorm exactly right, and she can't have anything from her roomie's side bleeding into hers. When she's in the studio - thanks to her irritatingly perfect pitch - she has to have every note exactly right and in the right tone. She's a perfectionist, and not just a little bit. The want to be perfect is deep in Claire's bones, and it's going to be staying that way. Also, when something bad happens to Claire - when she's upset, when something bad happens to her - she can't. She shuts down for days on end, without doing anything she doesn't have to. Sad!Claire has this horrible tendency to forget to eat, and that leads to everything you probably think it leads to. Sad!Claire also doesn't talk when she's upset, and she doesn't do anything related to music. She stops completely. Done. Lastly, let it be known that Claire trusts people too easily.
Korea, 1993: A teenaged girl, about three months away from giving birth, had to choose between giving up her baby or giving up her family. She picked to keep her family.
London, 1993: A classically trained soprano and cellist and her husband, a well-known producer, decided to adopt a child instead of having children of their own. One thing lead to another, and a baby girl named Sooyeon was a Christmas present for the Newby family. Renaming her Claire (though they kept her given name, same as her biological mother's, as her middle name), the Newbys raised Claire as their own. It was a headline maker...for people that follow British women that sing opera, anyway.
Claire grew up on a steady diet of classical music on one side and classic rock on another side. Thanks to the connections given to her by her parents, Claire attended arts schools throughout primary and secondary school in London. She also went to a Korean heritage camp in New York every summer, starting when she was 7. She was well off and musical, eventually starting a YouTube channel with a friend of hers, Elliot. Her father taught her how to produce, and her mother taught her how to sing. Right up until she became a trainee, Claire lived a normal, healthy life, surrounded by something she loved (and still loves.) Easy. She became a fan of k-pop the summer just before she turned 15, through her friend Hannah, and became a trainee for a new company just after her birthday.

She made friends with some of the members of KS's boy band before they debuted, and generally, had a good time doing what she loved - music. No drama or anything, because that's lame.

Claire likes to say that, rather than being a guy that plays guitar, Elliot Lee is a guitar that has a guy to play him. Much like Claire, he's a music-obsessed guy with perfect pitch, but unlike Claire, he's a lot more...quiet about it. He'd rather not comment on people's minor slip-ups; chances are, he'll just be playing his guitar and maybe singing a little bit along. Elliot is very introverted, and prefers to keep to himself, but he's sweet when he opens up to you (even if he doesn't talk much). His guitar is how he communicates, how he expresses his emotions; on an inviting kind of day he'll play Good Day Sunshine, and on a sad day he'll play Clear Day Cloudy Day. That's why, on his solo CDs, critics say to listen to the guitar rather than the vocals - that's where he gets all of his feelings out.
The two met at Korean Heritage Camp when he was ten and she nine. He was playing guitar, and she was listening in. He invited her inside, and that's how it started: he was a shy New Yorker who called her "British Girl", and she, in a wimpy retaliation, called him "Guitar Boy". Every summer, they'd record videos of him playing guitar and her singing. Eventually the two started a YouTube channel - GBandBG - which gained a bit of a following. Even when Claire became a trainee, she'd spend her vacation days at his house with his parents every summer, Claire's own parents flying from London to New York to supervise. Eventually, as Claire began training for Classic's debut, their covers decreased in frequence, until last June, when GBandBG uploaded their last cover and said goodbye: Clarity.
Now, behind the scenes, the two were friends. They were the kind of quiet not-couple you'd find in an indie film. They'd go around New York shopping or seeing the sights or talking about the Beatles, staring at the stars or busking for tips in the park. Although they don't do a lot of talking, you could tell how close they were when they would sing together. And even when Claire was in Korea training, she'd still call Elliot once a month.
And did they cover love songs? You bet. Of course they were did, 99% of pretty much every song ever is a love song. People would pass by mumbling about how cute a couple they were - which, y'know, they never actually were. They were duet partners, and that's all...even if the subtext would make a fanfic author cry. They parted ways in June and haven't spoken to each other since.
Normally, that would be where the story ends, but you're probably genre savvy enough to see that it's not. See, a few months after Claire and Elliot parted ways, he released a digital single - Happily Ever After - in August. It became popular through word of mouth and now, everyone's anticipating Elliot's next release. He became a huge indie solo artist, and now lives in Seoul.
And, there's something that Claire has no idea about: for Elliot, it was love at first sight. For him, every love song was torture, because he had to sing it with a girl he loved and couldn't say anything to. Happily Ever After is his song to her. He had no idea she was debuting until it happened, and now Claire Sooyeon Newby is in his life all over again...
