Mei was a problematic child in the past. She didn't have family issues or anything, but she solved her problems with her fists on the playground.As she got older, she became more involved in athletics and she had to be better in school or else she couldn't be on the team. Mei also stopped picking fights and focused more on her studies. She eventually reached the top of her class, which surprised many. She didn't have many friends, because she was constantly on the move. Her father always got teaching jobs in other places because he taught English. Her father got a job in Hong Kong when she was 12. During her years as a teenager in Hong Kong, she became more involved in their street society and learned many strange things like how to ride a unicycle and to throw knives. She also watched many street dance battles and learned how to sing, dance, beat box and rap. During a dance battle, she was singing and rapping and an SM scout found her. He told her to audition for SM. Mei did a global audition and when she made it, she relocated to Seoul.
