daran was born and raised in seoul south korea, the only child of choi jaehyuk and han dahye. she graduated ahead of her class with a degree in childhood education and as soon as she got out of college, was offered a job at seoul american elementary school where she taught korean to foreign students and english to native ones. around this time, she began to offer tutoring lessons to children who had difficulty with language and those parents' who planned for their children's TOEFL.

there isn't anything like being the center of attention in the eyes of 5 year old yiru with his restless personality and vivid imagination, anyone will be wired awake by this little devious munchkin. he likes being kept awake, curious about many things. usually questioning, he's the type to blabber and share stories to the elders, often evoking laughter with his bubbly and straightforward nature. he's the type of child that will make sure to wait up for you, no matter how late it is, just so he is able to greet you. with his sharp memory, he has keen observations about birthdays and favorites and always makes sure to keep those kinds of details in mind. empathetic, he is very compassionate to those around him, always considering how they feel and always making sure that they are fine. yiru doesn't like seeing anyone crying or sad and doesn't like it when he cannot comfort them.

— MEET MY "CHILD" (parents version) / it was a rainy and cold afternoon and yiru had begged daran to take him to ramen x, his favorite ramyun place. agreeing in the end, she took him there without thinking of bumping into anyone she knew. she was on the line waiting for the cashier to take her order and yiru was on the washroom, washing his hand and preparing for his meal. she was surprised when her parents suddenly entered, unsure how to tell them that she was not alone to eat. suddenly, yiru began to lazily and timidly make his way towards her. her parents watched as the child reached up for her hands, asking, "daran umma, when is our ramen going to be ready?" she later on had to explain to them that yiru was the child of the engineer she worked for. yiru bowed to them after daran introduced them as her parents and the four of them ended up having the meal together. as much as they were fond of the child, her mom still couldn't help but warn her, that she should not attach herself so much to the child (and possibly the father)
