character traits : oucurious, easy-going, dedicated, uptight, self-deprecating, awkward

personality : Jihae is genuinely fascinated by the world. She pays attention in school not because she wants perfect grades (although she does want those too), but because she never finds it boring. Learning about culture from thousands of years ago in a world barely imaginable today? How our bodies work to the microscopic degree? The intricacies of a language that over a billion people dream in? How could any of this possibly be boring? Her parents instilled a love of learning in her, and to her, learning is something she can't imagine a life without. Majoring in Biology and minoring in East Asian history, Jihae has a busy schedule but she doesn't mind- there's so much to learn and so little time!

She's the type of person who reads the news and knows all the latest events and is always willing to listen to people babble on about something or another. Although she's vocal and willing to push her ideas forward in the classroom, outside, she tends to go with the flow and is very easy going. She can easily strike a conversation with strangers- usually about a book they're reading or some current event- but she's not very charismatic and doesn't like joking around. Conversations might begin quickly, but they usually fizzle out, when she has no idea what to say next after they've finished discussing a certain topic. Enemies, in her opinion, are best avoided, so she tries not to say or do anything that could be potentially offensive. As a result, she comes off as friendly and "nice," but rarely memorable. She has many acquaintances, but few true friends.

Jihae really values friendship and she thinks her friends each gorgeous in their own little ways (L'Amour has the gorgeous hair, Amare has the cutest eye smile, Leibe's eyes light up whenever she's doing something she's truly passionate about, Amore smile is so bright like some of her enthusiasm has spilled over, and Sarang walks as gracefully as a ballerina) But when she looks in the mirror, she feels a little plain, not instantly glamorous and with a stunning face. She has a slightly-round, baby face, and is a little sensitive about her lack of cheekbones and how her cheeks will puff up when she laughs, so she covers with her hand as a reflex. She knows she's not ugly, but the idea that she's not beautiful is just as much a fact as the statements in the encyclopedia. Without meaning to, she sometimes will make self-deprecating statements about her looks. It's not something that really bothers her, just another part of life. Looks aren't something she values anyway, and she's confident about everything else, so she never gets jealous or lets this interfere with her studies or friendships.

She means well, but Jihae tends to get stuck in habits and be too uptight. Her friends know how much she values things they're often indifferent about, and so they respect the fact that she has to know the exact times for their lunch dates and must have an organized calendar. However, they also know that even if she swears she doesn't want to go out that night, she really, really should because she's probably spent the past week holed up in her room studying for a test she just aced, and they'll pull her out and make her have some fun (and although she moans and pouts, Jihae doesn't actually mind.) In the end, she truly does value her friends, even if she doesn't quite know how to put it in words.

background : Both of Jihae's parents are teachers, so her love of learning comes naturally. Their jobs were satisfying but weren't partiularly high-paying, so Jihae and her younger sister had to share a room when they were growing up and they grew close to each other. She and her parents got along well, mostly because she inherited her father's easy-going personality and Jihae was diligent and organized enough never to create a fuss. Her younger sister, considerably more bratty and hot-temptered, was much more into music than school and school and wanted to audition and "make it big." This caused a great deal of arguing when Jihae was in high school. Jihae always felt a little guilty, being the "older, perfect sister" in the eyes of her parents, so she tried to soften the arguments. Even if she didn't really get her sister's dreams, she persuaded her parents to let her continue guitar lessons and convinced her sister to still attend university.

Jihae has always been interested in science, but since her parents teach history and literature, at first she's wasn't too sure about whether she wanted to pursue it. She was accepted into one of the best universities in Seoul, so she didn't want to limit herself. Eventually, she decided Biology would be a useful major and would have a lot of career options, as well as the potential to switch to something like Chemistry or go into medicine. She ended up minoring in East Asian history because she couldn't stick to only one subject. She made a number of good friends in elementary school and was lucky to have them as life-long friends. She's always been the one they go to for help with homework, with her clear and patient explanations. They often for being "the smart one" and being an overachiever by joining way too many clubs (and she would protest that she couldn't choose which one not to attend since they all interested her.) In college, she found herself too busy to join quite as many clubs, but she always makes time for her best friends.

lifestyle : She currently lives in an apartment near campous, as it is fairly close to both the laboratory where she has an internship and to campus of Yonsei University, where she is in her final year. It's a small apartment, only having three tiny rooms (including the bathroom) and pretty old, with peeling paint and exposed pipes, but Jihae doesn't mind. She spends a lot of time in classes and volunteering as a tutor and she also spends hours each day doing research at the lab. Jihae wants to attend a good grad school (her dream would be Pohung University of Science and Technology since it is the best in Korea but she's not sure about how she feels about moving) Overall, her days are busy, and she spends more time outside her apartment than she does inside.

trivia :

Likes:

  • Books! She has a huge collection at home and was heartbroken she could only bring a small fraction with her to school
  • Rainy days are soothing and it provides good background noise for her studying.
  • Hand-written letters- call her old-fashioned, but something about an inked page feels so much more personal than an email. She writes home to her parents, but her sister refuses anything but electronic communication.
  • Running, especially when she's stressed out.

Disikes:

  • Gum, after a horrible incident with her hair in middle school
  • Extreme temperature- she's happiest in the spring and autumn, when she can choose whether or not she wants a jacket
  • Eye makeup- her eyes are very sensitive, so makeup easily irritates them and causes them to turn red
  • Loud music, especially when she's trying to study

family :
father : gu kang dae | 51 | Korean literature teacher a Hanseo University | quiet, firm, decisive | good friends with kim jongdae's father, and they kept in touch after they moved to china, unbeknownst to jihae.

mother: lee soojien | 50 | History teacher at a local high school | energetic, youthful, loud | she can be a bit overbearing, in the way many parents are, but she always supported jihae. she's quite a bit more pushy with jieun's life, however.

sister : gu jieun | 17| student | stubborn, loud, rebellion, sarcastic, musically-talented | despite how different their personalities are, she and jihae get along well. mostly, they connect over social media and email.

friends :
fellow biology major : kim joonmyun | 21 | student, majoring in Biology | hard-working, sympathetic, kind | just a friend

friend on campus : wang feifei | 22 | student, majoring in Biology | outgoing, cheerful, bright | a mutual friend with Kim Jongdae, maybe somehow through her chinese roots

others :
high school boyfriend : Lee Minho | 20 | student, majoring in Chemistry at a different university | shy, quiet, nice | gets the guts to ask her out at the end of senior year, and she accepts even though she's pining after jongdae (not that'd she'd admit it). they go out for a short while and break it off right before leaving for college.

short fling : Byun Baekhyun | 22 | studnet, majoring in Music | charismatic, funny, captivating | he lived in the male dormitory nearby/ a quick hook-up which turned into a fling that lasted a couple weeks, until Jieun breaks it off. They're still good friends.

love interest : kim jongdae
personality : Suave and reassured, Kim Jongdae always knows what he's doing, or so it seems. Even if he doesn't, he's quick on his feet and is able to improvise something up quickly. He's a rather sarcastic person and is quick to make a joke at the expense of other. However, he's also sensitive enough that he doesn't actually make fun of anybody who'd be offended. His face is very expressive, and it's obvious when he's happy or sad. He's actually kind of an awkward person when trying to convey emotions and he really just is loud for attention. All he wants is a bit of love and affection, but he's endearingly shy about these sort of things. He rarely falls in love, but when he does, it's complete puppy love and thinks about her constantly and can't let it go.

how you met : they used to be next door neighbors when they were young, and they're just friends, nothing more, for many years.

relationship : jihae started nursing a big crush on him when she was 16, that lasted a few months until she moved. as a result, the love died down and she spent so long getting over it that when jongdae comes back, she's too scared to really act on any kind of interest. however, they share a mutual friend (feifei) and end up spending too much time around each other. She becomes oddly comfortable with him, like he never left, and is a lot more open towards bantering and joking around since she knows he won't take it the wrong way. they start out as quick best friends, before he confesses. their love begins quite awkwardly, since jongdae has to be more forward and not get friend-zoned. but they always stay friends and aren't afraid to show each other the lazy and silly parts of their lives.

future together : fall in love, of course! jongdae starts hanging around her a lot (and this confuses jihae a bit because why is he poping out of nowhere?!?!) and although they flirt a bit, jihae never realizes it's attraction until jongdae just outright confesses one day. he also sees her mark for the first time (she usually wears her hair down and he never remembered seeing it before) and that makes him realize maybe she's more than just a little temporary crush. he takes her stargazing and ends up confessing shyly. after jongdae taking the initiative, jihae's a lot more bold and willing to be affectionate.

     trivia :

  • he has a matching mark of the constellation of cepheus, the king consellation
  • after living in the polluted city for so many years, he really appreciates the starry sky and joins the stargazing club (hence learning about constellations and realizing they have matching marks)
  • he takes her stargazing for one of their dates and confesses
  • sometimes refers to her as his "shining star"
  • jongdae finds jihae's little sister hilarious and they gang up on jihae over breaks. he also sings cute little duets with her.
  • jia tries to set them up once she realizes jongdae's crush (she ships them so hard, to be quite honest)
  • they don't like pda, so most people don't know they're dating
  • maybe a tiny love triangle with baekhyun, where jongdae gets jealous (but he doesn't have to worry because jihae's been over baekhyun for years by now)

backup : Luhan
