Boys Before Friends

First off, I would like to note that the only reason I am putting this here is because I feel as though this is the only relevant spot to put it. After all, we are all fans of Boys Over Flowers, we all swoon over Lee MinHo, and we probably have all seen the drama dozens of times.

Now I am sure everyone has heard of the American remake of Boys Over Flowers. It is a low-budget project done in California by amateur actors and an amateur company. The first episode aired one week ago and the internet is at war, so I figured I would put in my two cents.

I love watching things. I salivate over clever camera angles, delectable scripts, and super-convincing acting. This first episode had none of these. The lighting was poor, the sound was inconsistent, the filming was amateur, the script was stale, and the acting was boring. It was, overall, pathetic. When I first noticed this, I was going to stop watching. I was going to quit.

But the point here is, I didn't.

Something in me told me to stop, to watch the episode all the way through. I had nothing better to do anyways. And that was when I looked past all that made me cringe and instead focused on the two most important things: the hard work and the fun.

There is a scene in which Zoey walks into her dance studio room thing and falls over because the floor is slippery (though I'm not really sure how they got it to be that slippery). She tries to stand and falls back over. She tries again, with the same result. Eventually she is simply sliding around the floor on her stomach in a vain attempt to do something, anything. And you know what? I laughed. In that moment I saw the charm that attracted me to the Korean drama in the first place. And it was marvelous.

So yes, there is an infinite list of things that are wrong with this. I could go on for the rest of my life just based on the first episode. But it is our job as loyal fans of this entire story, whether it be the Korean, Japanese, Taiwanese, or any other version, to support this brave attempt at sharing it with a whole new audience! The way I see it, instead of bashing it, why don't we support it? Watch it, donate to the company, tell your friends! If we sit here complaining about it, nothing will improve. We have to help make it improve.

So I guess what this all boils down to is that we as fans, by voicing all of our complaints, are simply destroying something that others of our own kind put SO much effort into creating. It is counterproductive. Maybe we just need to have positivity, be a little productive, and stand behind the people who risked sharing what they loved with others.

That's just my two cents on the entire topic.
