Our Youngdo

Choi Young Do is the most realistic character in Heirs.

He’s just like us. He’s bitter, lonely and just wants needs some love. He wantsneeds a complete family, he wants needs his father to stop being unfaithful and being with a different girl every night. He wants needs his mother to be a mother to him and not leave him alone with his dad. She could have ran away with him. But perhaps, like Tan’s mother, she probably thinks Youngdo has a brighter (aka rich) future with his dad, and doesn’t want him to be penniless with her. But never once did she try to contact him at all. If she thought poor young Youngdo didn’t need a mother’s love, she thought wrong, and I really hope she feels the guilt in her heart.

Unfortunately for Youngdo, his first love happens to be someone who doesn’t have any space in her heart for him. However through this humbling experience of chasing after a girl selflessly and being rejected multiple times, he has grown so much, from a high-class rich bully who appears not to care about anyone, to the sweetest boy in that drama. He has so much love to give out. He has also become mature enough to put down his love for Eunsang in a non-explosive way. Just like me, he would rather cut all ties with a person who can’t give any love to him, instead of remaining friends and letting small things hurt him everyday. That way, he can truly move on from the first person he has really gave his heart to, but received nothing in return.

He’s a tough guy with such a soft heart, our Youngdo. And that’s what I saw in him ever since he appeared in Heirs.

The best scenes in the last few episodes, were when Youngdo ran to find Tan to tell him about his mother leaving. Even though it reminds him so much of his own situation years ago, he did the right thing, and really saved both of them. What really breaks my heart was the dialogue on the deokbeokkie store wall.

“Youngdo ya, are you okay?”

“No, I don’t think I’ll ever be okay.”

– some sources say it was “I lived wrongly all this while” or smth like that, but I like the first one LOL.

Another scene was the one with his father. His father getting accused of breaking some weird biz laws, and poor Youngdo’s life being turned upside down again. You can’t just let him be without a father when he doesn’t even have a mother! But the thing is, his father actually does care for him somewhere deep in his heart, telling Youngdo to go stay with his aunt and not to be alone in the house. That was sweet.

And that scene with Youngdo apologizing to the boy (Joon Young) he bullied so badly in the earlier episodes, (side note: Joon Young cleaned up quite well.)

Although Joon Young did not want to accept his apology, we can really tell Youngdo has matured A LOT and reflected on all his past actions. He feels guilty, and sorry to everyone he has hurt. And that’s how he brings himself to apologise, even though he’s not a person who would do that.

What I’m trying to say is, Youngdo’s just such a nice boy. He’s such a warm boy. It’s just because he grew up in the wrong kind of environment, and picked his friends and battles wrongly. From a MIA mother, to a physically abusive and unfair father, to having a best friend that somehow misunderstands how Youngdo turns his hurt of losing his mother into Kim Tan’s fault for not telling him about his mother, and to choosing the wrong girl to love.

At the end of the drama, we really see Youngdo for who he is. Just a sweet boy who is misunderstood and unloved. I want to hug him so much in this drama.
