born in gwangju as the second child to eun ji and jae won, a museum tour guide and an art appraiser for an auction house, joo ri's homelife was never considered cookie-cutter. her parents were very eccentric people and, to be completely honest, weren't exactly naturally gifted parents. in fact they both fell into a very lax parenting style with both their daughters, letting the two learn through making mistakes and hardly interfering. the only thing they did was pray that their children made good decisions in the end. jae won was very successful in his career and eventually moved to a bigger auction house located in seoul, and with that move came his family where eun ji fell into being a housewife after leaving her job behind. though both of her parents were passionate about arts and antiques, joo ri's heart wasn't exactly into paintings and sculptures, more so it belonged to more physical arts like dancing and singing. her parents cultivated her interests and enrolled her in dance classes at a young age, both excited to see their daughter "express" herself in a way she felt comfortable with. while joo ri refined her skills it wasn't long until her interests turned into passions and, eventually, into dreams. her parents were more than happy to drive her to company auditions since they felt that her talents shouldn't go to waste. joo ri considers herself lucky to have such understanding and encouraging parents though she wouldn't say they were "supportive" exactly. in the beginning she wanted to become an idol to grab her parents' attentions and approvals. slowly, as she got older and experienced trainee life, she realized that she should follow through with her dream for herself and not because she wanted to impress other people.
