My humble interpretation of 2NE1's Missing You MV

As I'm listening to the song and watching the video for the nth time in the day -and I'm still not tired of it, not in the least bit- I started to make some interpretations of the song. Maybe by reading this, some doubts about the video may be cleared for you.

DISCLAIMER: This, by any means, is claimed to be the official meaning of the video. This is just my interpretation, it can be right or it can be wrong. And that's what's so amazing about art, each individual can interpret it in their own way.

As you may see, this song has some pretty good symbolism right there, but what's so beautiful about the video, is that everything is on balance. To explain that last expression a little better, well, it has the perfect amount of things, in my opinion. It's not overflowed by decorations of stationary things, in return, it seems like the scenery complements the girls, rather than overshadowing them. Because the main subject in this video and song, is the person that's suffering, it's not about the story or how things happened. What matters here, is the pain and the different personalities that each of the girls represent.

As we can see here, the video shows four girls, four personalities, four different stories. And I can even go further and perhaps be a little of a meddler and say that, judging YG's statement and the girls' statements about how emotional this song is to them, and how much they cried while recording it, this may represent how they truly are, their struggles, this can have a much deeper meaning than we can comprehend.

For instance, at the beginning we have the four girls standing together, each of them with a different story, different experiences, but with something in common, loss and pain.

Each girl represent something different, which is why we'll analyze them separately.

Minzy:

We have Minzy, who represents a young, innocent girl who has perhaps experienced her first love, and now has lost it.

Here she seems to be still in that stage of shock, like this love had recently ended, so she's still in this process of understanding and confusion. I can see some anger in her face and sadness at the same time, and I like how the gem represents a tear falling from her eye.

Then, when she's looking at the reflection on the mirror, she seems to be questioning this whole situation, and again, there's a state of confusion and mixed emotions crossing her mind. Something that can happen in the first stages of the end of a relationship.

Also, she could be looking at the mirror and asking herself “what went wrong?”.

Bom:

A woman who has experienced life, who has loved, suffered; but now looks at all of it as a memory, something from the past, and even though she's sad, she's only recalling things, something that happened long ago, perhaps.

We can see her going back to the past, to the places that reminds her of that time of her life.

Usually, a cloth that comes off from a person's face can represent the idea of seeing things in a different way, like it's opening their eyes to another reality, the cloth falls like the perception that was blinding them also falls, they are no longer 'blind', so they see the reality of things. Maybe that's what's happening to her, I'll leave that interpretation to you.

I really like this part. My interpretation is that Bom is returning to a special place that maybe in the past, she shared with her loved one, and now she's coming back, maybe to say goodbye and find closure. You can see in her face how she starts to remember those moments. Also, kind of like looking at the place and thinking “it's been a while”.

Dara:

Here we have the strongest of them all -at least on the outside-, the Phoenix, the one who has gone through a lot of pain but is reborn, strong.

In this part we can see how the room is all painted in red, a bright color - one of the few, if not the only scene with such a vibrant color at the background- as she's standing and acting in a way that's the complete opposite of being vulnerable. The expressions of her face say “I am back, stronger than ever, there's nothing than can break me down now”.

Also the feathers, the ones on her outfit and the feather that's burning. That scene also sustains the theory of the Phoenix, and how like the Phoenix, she's reborn after all the pain.

Then the next scene, where she's sitting on the table with the chessboard next to her. My guess is that, when she pushes the piece to the floor, it can be two things: 1- now she's in charge of the game, no one can control her anymore, she's the one who's in control of the situation, 2- maybe also she's kind of despising her old love, kind of expressing “I'm not going to fall for your tricks anymore”. The cold and fierce expression on her face still remains.

CL:

To me, she was the mostly hurt. The scene -which was beautifully done-, conveys the image of a vulnerable girl, who has been shattered to pieces, desolated, empty.

When she has clothes on. She still tries to remain a little emotionless and oblivious to the situation. Of course, she's deeply hurt and her faces shows it, but she still doesn't want to demonstrate it. Pretending, acting.

Finally, when she's , her shield is also gone. Now we can see her without any protection or act.

In this picture, it seems to me like she's still trying to cover her tears.

Definitely this part was my favorite in the video.

Firstly, we can put this into perspective, we have CL portrayed as a bad girl, 'the baddest female', on her daily basis. It's her job, her alter ego, the image that she sells. But what if, on the inside, she's just a very vulnerable girl? Broken? Lonely? Empty? Like how it is beautifully portrayed on this video?

Secondly, that phrase at the background also caught my attention. "If our love ceases to be, that is the end of my world for me". This can be interpreted in many ways. To me, it seems like CL has gone out of a relationship -in an unspecified way because, like I mentioned before, the story of how they got to that stage it's not what matters here-. The phrase is something that perhaps she always thought about,, 'if you leave me that's the end for me', something like that. And now that it has ended, everything is broken and shattered. You see how her surroundings are all pieces of debris, there's no light, everything is cold, there's no color, she's basically destroyed, alone and vulnerable -that's what the represents-.  Here is when we see her true self.

Now that we have analyzed each person, we can also take in mind these things.

Here we have the four girls, hiding their emotions in public.

We have the clear expression of CL that shows what a strong girl she tries to be in front of the others, but we clearly see that on the inside, that's not what happens. Nobody wants to show their inner struggles to the rest.

The glasses are also a way of hiding her feelings. Kind of like a mask.

Then there's this part:

Here they quietly suffer in silence, they are together, but still reserved about their struggles. You never see them comforting each other, they are always alone and kind of ignoring each other as well. But the difference with the other scene is that here you can see them indoors, and they do show a little emotion because they are not out on the public, but still, they don't dare to show that emotion to the others, they refuse to look at each others eyes even.

The man with the mask.

To me, the more I watch the video the more I convince myself that the man with the mask actually represents the girls' emotions. How they are on the inside. They fall, they get crushed, everything is represented in this interpretive dance. Mostly from the minute 1:13 to 1:31. It shows the girls on the outside, quiet and reserved, hiding their thoughts and emotions, and then we go back to the man dancing, that represents how they are feeling on the inside. It goes back and forth from what they pretend to be on the outside and how they truly are on the inside.

Here we have a weak Dara, that shows that even though she's strong now, on the inside, she still also feels sad and hurt, and vulnerable.

You don't look so fierce there Dara.

The feathers passing by CL, it can be the memories, her world, slipping away from her.

Letting go of the past.

White represents innocence. Maybe it's for Minzy.

Loneliness.

Longing.

Trying to move on, or to endure the situation.

Even though she was reborn as a stronger woman, the experiences from the past are still something that she remembers with sorrow.

Simply... missing you.

I still can't help but love this interpretation. Words always leave me when I read it and I can't help but cry everytime I hear the song itself. Not because I think of the MV, but because of the fact that the interpretation is what I hear in their voices.

The pain, the confusion, the faked strength, and especially, the feeling of missing someone.
