The Video Will

THE VIDEO WILL

Kei, a close friend and fellow worker in our company, passed away recently. According to his family, he slipped and fell while free climbing.

Half a year ago, before his death, Kei asked me for a favor. Since his hobby was dangerous and couldn’t predict when he would lose his life, he decided to record a video message and wanted it to be shown to his family if he died.

I tried to warn him to stop free climbing but Kei didn’t listen. Since he was a really stubborn guy, I eventually accepted his request to be the cameraman.

Since we could be discovered if we recorded in Kei’s house, we decided to do it in my house.

With the white wall as the background, Kei started to talk:

"This is Kei. If you’re watching this video, then that means I’m already dead. Kaori (wife’s name), Ayumi (daughter’s name), thank you for all that you’ve done. I’m sorry for all the trouble that I’ve caused due to my hobby.

My parents who raised me, and all my friends, you guys are all probably sad because I’m dead, but don’t be.

I’m in heaven and very happy. I’m sorry that I couldn’t meet with you guys, but I’ll be watching from heaven. Ayumi, your dad is watching you from heaven. So please don’t be sad, but instead, smile for me.

Until then, goodbye.”

After recording this, Kei really died half a year later. We mourned together with his family all night long. Even I couldn’t believe it myself.

After a week had passed, I decided to show that video to Kei’s family.

"This will be like a memorial service, so please watch it." I told them as I took out the DVD.

The video began to play. With a whirring sound, a black screen continued for about 10 seconds.

'Huh? Did I fail at recording?' The moment I thought that, Kei’s form began to show from the middle of the dark background - wait, was my room that dark when we recorded?

"This is Kei. If you’re… this video, it’s … I’m… dead. Kaori, Ayumi, thank you for… done."

There was some serious static noise, along with the whirrling sound, mixed with Kei’s voice, so it was very hard to hear.

"My parents who raised me, and all my friends, you guys are all probably sad because I’m dead, but don’t be.
I’m [zubwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa] [aaaaaaaaaaa][aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa] Ayumi, your dad is [aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa] [aaaaaaaaaaaaa] I don’t want to die! I don’t [aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa] die!…. No [aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa] [aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa]”

It was extremely chilling and hard to hear until the end with all the static - but one thing’s clear: it was very different from what Kei and I had recorded.

The dialogue had changed to someone crying like it was in the verge of death, and we could clearly see that something from the dark corner grasped Kei’s arm and slowly immersed itself beside him.

The whole family was in an uproar, with Kei’s wife demanding why I showed this video and Kei’s father scolding me.

The family eventually calmed down when Kei’s wife’s little brother reminded everyone that Kei wasn’t the type of person to record such a nasty prank video.

I bowed down to the family, apologizing and promising to get rid of the video as soon as I can.

The next day, I went to a shrine and asked the chief priest to destroy the DVD.

The moment the priest saw the envelope containing the DVD, he said, "Ah, sorry, it’s too much for this place."

He told me to go to another shrine where there’s a priest who has the ability to exorcise evil spirits. When I got there, he told me, "You brought such a horrifying thing."

According to him, the moment Kei had recorded the video, he was being dragged down to hell. The priest didn’t even understand why Kei managed to live half a year longer - when he should have died right after the recording.
